Cannabis: A History | Martin Booth
post image

Day 29
An informative and fluid look at the history of Cannabis. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the medicinal uses dating back thousands of years ago. Also includes the history behind institutionalized racism attached. Something that I highly appreciate is Booth‘s opinion is known BUT it does not influence his writing on the history. May reread since last reading so much has changed in regards to cannabis.

Day 28
Heard this is a classic many really enjoy. I have read Emily of New Moon & The Blue Castle. Unfortunately they got damaged during a flood. Haven‘t had an overwhelming desire to pick this up. Will say I love the cover & leather bound books in general. Anyone recommend?

Day 27
Its rare that I adore the 1st book. They tend to be focused on world building and character development. In that aspect, I adore this. Has its cliches but the rest of the trilogy is totally worth it!

On the day of her arranged wedding, Princess Lia flees to a distant village. Unbeknownst to her, an assassin & her betrothed soon arrive. Who can she trust & what secrets will be uncovered?

Day 26
One of my favorite authors. Especially love her TED talks particularly The Danger of a Single Story. Major themes about Race/racism/racial hierarchy in the West alongside the significance of honesty. I loved how Adichie plays with the juxtaposition between Ifemelu & Obinze‘s Western experiences.

“Racism should never have happened and so you don't get a cookie for reducing it”.

Day 24
Love the show; prompted me to read the source. Captivating so far as to how much Douglas exposes his own failures. Pleasing my interests of psychology, police work & why humans do unbelievably horrific things.

John Douglas describes his journey to the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI & the interviews he conducted alongside other agents to understanding the psyche of serial killers.

Day 22 & 23
Once Upon was a book I never expected to like; required for class. After the death of her father, Margo sets off on a journey with her rifle, supplies & beloved Annie Oakley bio. Searching for her mother, she will need all her survival instincts & skills. Will she survive or will the rivers inhabitants chew her alive? I haven‘t read A Drop yet but believe it‘s also about survival.

Day 21
Recent 🎁 from an old friend; unread. April, an auctioneer at Sotheby‘s, is sent to the 9th arrondissement of Paris. An apartment from WWII has been discovered filled with antiques including a Boldini painting. There she finds 📓 from the former famous tenant, Marthe de Florian.

The summary reminds me of a recently read with a diff setting - The Light Over London by Julia Kelly.

Day 20
Colossus was my intro to CW & I was hooked! Short story collection about living in NYC & his/hers/their version on NY is different from another‘s. Gifted before moving there & forever grateful. Haven‘t read Underground yet, since I‘m catching up. Nonetheless I expect great things from this phenomenal writer.

Day 19
Classic that I found enjoyable. Critique on 19th century English sex & societal ideologies. Country girl, Tess, learns of her wealthy ancestry & aims to take the family name. What follows is fated to be & will end in tragedy.

“She moved about in a mental cloud of many-coloured idealities, which eclipsed all sinister contingencies by its brightness”

Day 18

Have some time to take break & read a bit. Don‘t think this author/book needs much explaining as both are pretty well known.

“When I‘m asked what I consider to be the most frightening book I‘ve ever written, the answer I give comes easily and with no hesitation... All I know is that Pet Sematary is the one I put in a drawer, thinking I had finally gone too far.”
