Troll Bridge | Neil Gaiman
24 posts | 26 read | 23 to read
Troll Bridge, a tale from the mind of Sunday Times bestselling writer Neil Gaiman, has been beautifully adapted for the first time by Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Colleen Doran. This striking graphic novel will delight fans of Alan Moore, Dave McKean and beyond. Young Jack's world is full of ghosts and ghouls, but one monster - a ravenous and hideous troll - haunts him long into manhood. As the beast sups upon a lifetime of Jack's fear and regret, Jack must find the courage within himself to face the fiend once and for all.

Love this ❤️ I really want to read more of his books. Any recommendations for best to start with? Please and thank you 📚❤️📖

HannaPolkadots I have never gone wrong with Gaiman, I think he is awesome. The Graveyard Book, the Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverworld, Anansi Boys - I've enjoyed them all. I think American Gods is my least favorite, probably because I picked up on too many things too early, so I sort of lost the wow moments. But that does not mean it's a bad story in any way 🤓 4y
runswithscissors007 I think you get a buffet of Gaiman in the ocean at the end of the lane and it is small-ish. (Also “Fortunately the Milk....” for younger kids but still a Gaiman taster) 4y
Scochrane26 I started with Ocean at the end of the Lane. The Graveyard Book would also be good to start with. 4y

The art was good and the story was not bad, I just didn‘t connect with the character.

I am always amazed what Neil Gaiman comes up with. I enjoyed this one. The ending surprised me.

Tomigirl44 You seem to have read at least a couple Neil Gaiman books (probably more than just a couple 😊); I have not read anything by him yet - what would you suggest I start with? 6y
398.2 @Tomigirl44 😀 Do you want to start with a graphic novel or one of his longer books? I know graphic novels aren‘t for everyone. 6y
Tomigirl44 I wasn‘t even aware that he had any graphic novels - I‘m probably most interested in a “traditional” novel, but I‘ll keep a graphic one in mind as well - how about one of each? 6y
398.2 Ocean at the end of the lane is really good. It‘s not long at all. American Gods is one of his longer novels but also good. Ohhhhhh......Check out the Sleeper and the Spindle. 😀 I hope you like them. @Tomigirl44 6y
Tomigirl44 Thank you! And as good fortune would have it each of the 3 was available on kindle from one of my libraries 😊 I guess I have my reading set out for me! 6y

#AdelesMayMashUp Day 15: #WaterUnderTheBridge could also have a troll lounging about. I hesitate to call this Gaiman story a picturebook as it seems more like a coming-of-age illustrated novella. If you appreciate stories with a dab of the creepy in them, this one‘s for you.

I really love Neil Gaiman's novels so when I chanced upon this graphic novel I thought I'd give it a shot. It has some wonderfully done drawings and the story is interesting (although obviously very short). Overall I enjoyed it even though I really don't think GNs are really my thing.

1. 💸 I want this lovely, fuzzy (!) quilt. But also...Confession Time: I‘ve been thinking a lot lately about buying a sweet vintage troll doll & crafting outfits for it (e.g. a tiny embroidered t-shirt that reads “feminist AF”). I might be losing my mind...

2. 🥜 Peanut m&m‘s only!

3. 🔮 Lev Grossman‘s “Magicians” series.

4. 💃🏼 I desperately wanted to be Janet Jackson‘s background dancer.😅 #dreambig

5. 🍀 Lucky # : 17

At first I thought this was going to be another case of Gaiman not translating well. His works are just so locked into their written medium. But the long get I read this one the more it seemed to work. Maybe even better than it had originally as it had a very Sandman feel to it. Not one of my favorites of his stories but definitely and interesting one.

A cute story that at first seems like a kids tale but soon turns out much more gaiman.

Preparing Gaiman's 'Troll Bridge' and 'A Study in Emerald' for my seminar on Friday. I'm excited to hear what my students think about the two stories. ❤️

Bradleygirl Man I respect Gaiman's chops but a Study in Emerald squicked me right the heck out. Was good though! 7y

I usually love Neil Gaiman but this adult graphic novel didn't do much for me.

It doesn't feel original. The surprise ending isnt so surprising. I didn't get the "magical turn-of-phrase" feeling that I usually get from reading a Gaiman. Some of the illustrations are dreamy, which contrasts nicely with the text - but that's the best I can say. I'm underwhelmed. I did appreciate that the jerk got what was coming to him, like in any good fairytale.

monalyisha Also, I had to look up some Britishisms, like the word "gonk," which refers to these little, moss-colored, pom-pom creature tchotchkes with googly eyes. Was I supposed to know what those are? Do British people know what those are? (edited) 8y

Of course Neil Gaiman would write a coming-of-age story involving a troll! A slight take on the Billy Goats Gruff, this adult graphic novel has a twist I didn't see coming, and an ending that left me feeling sad. 😢
