A hilarious picture book about dealing with unexplained feelings...and the danger in suppressing them! Jim the chimpanzee is in a terrible mood for no good reason. His friends can't understand it--how can he be in a bad mood when it's SUCH a beautiful day? They encourage him not to hunch, to smile, and to do things that make THEM happy. But Jim can't take all the advice...and has a BIT of a meltdown. Could it be that he just needs a day to feel grumpy? Suzanne and Max Lang bring hilarity and levity to this very important lesson. This picture book is an excellent case study in the dangers of putting on a happy face and demonstrates to kids that they are allowed to feel their feelings (though they should be careful of hurting others in the process!).

"Are you still grumpy?" "Yes," said Jim, "but I'll probably feel better soon enough, too. For now, I need to be grumpy." "It's a wonderful day to be grumpy," said Norman. Jim agreed.

This book is super cute and a great way for children to feel their emotions. The colors are vivid and captivating. By having so many animals the kids will be able to find one to connect with. I also like this story because it‘s subtle poetry that kids can follow along before moving onto the harder stuff.

So often, we're advised to fix "it" when grumpy or upset. Thankfully, that's not the moral of this story. After several failed attempts, the main characters learn to simply meet their feelings. The illustrations offer humor to several frustrating situations. Great way to introduce meditation or growth mindset. #dw2020reads

I loved this book! This F story is about a little monkey who is told he looks grumpy over and over by his friends and then he suddenly becomes grumpy and feels bad about feeling down. He finds another friend who is also Grumpy and he tells him that it is a great day to be grumpy and they both start feeling better.

LizzettM I think this book focuses on (8.2) vary demands and resources to optimize challenge. The EL strategy I would use is 17, provide contextual support through audio visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. This book was New York Times Bestseller.

DrSpalding You don‘t mention the teaching strategy you would use. If you consult the readers theater page of the Google site you will see there is a readers theater for this text. It would work well with your English learner strategy. 4y

The New York Times Best Selling F Picture Book, The Grumpy Monkey is about a monkey who just can‘t have a good day. In his eyes everything is going wrong, and he is just not happy. This book is hilarious, and children would love it and it teaches them how to handle their emotions. This would absolutely work as a RT script and aid students with fluency.

Kayla_C UDL 5.3 Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance goes hand & hand with this book. ESOL strategy 6, continually monitor students‘ comprehension would both be affective while using this book as a reader‘s theatre book in your classroom. Here is a lesson on emotions and activities that would also go hand & hand with this lesson. https://www.manyseasonsofmotherhood.com/grumpy-monkey-theme-unit-activities/ (edited) 4y
ShardaeP Text to text connection: it sounds similar to a book I just read called “Pete the cat and his magic sunglasses”. Pete is having a bad day and the sunglasses make him feel better. Then he has to adjust his feelings in the absence of the glasses. (edited) 4y
Kayla_C I have been wanting to read that book, so I definitely will read it in the next couple of days. 4y
DrSpalding This book looks fantastic! We have a readers theater script of the first in the series on our Google site. Check it out. I love that your peers are making text to text connections! 4y

An irresistible little book where it's okay to feel grumpy, and to be unsure about where your grumpiness comes from.

Grumpy Monkey is a humorous story about a monkey who just can‘t seem to like anything for the day! Everything is wrong, and though Jim Chimpanzee‘s friends try to tell him he is grumpy, he remains in denial, until he comes across another grumpy friend and realizes maybe everyone is right. The illustrations maximize the humorous book, making it a New York Times Best Selling Picture Book. #ucflae3414f19

YvetteE Grumpy Monkey is appropriate for kindergarten level readers. The provided lesson plan includes a model of what students think the monkey would say.
Use multiple tools for construction and composition (5.2)
While also using the hands-on learning ESOL strategy.

Mwinship This looks like a cute and humorous book! Great for just a great laugh and to get kids laughing. 5y
fabozzia I haven‘t read this book but now I want to! Kids should be aware of their attitude and how their attitude can affect others. This would be a great classroom library book! 5y
DrSpalding Make sure you explicitly note what teaching strategy you would use! You noted them on your Litsy log. On the Google site there is a readers theater of this particular book that works quite well! It is funny and students would enjoy it! 4y

Sometimes, despite all the good intentions and advice, you just have to be grumpy. Jim Panzee has a day where nothing is right, and he just has to ride that wave. Super cute and funny.

The first that came to mind for #bestbookfriendship for me was definitely Calvin & Hobbes! I love those two! But I'd also like to share one of my fav reads with my LO recently (tagged book), showing us that it's ok to not be in our best moods sometimes. Your best buddy will understand & will love you just the way you are, others that don't, don't matter anyway :)
