Picking my #booked2020 selection for #coverlove was easy. I bought this book two years ago largely because of how gorgeous the cover is and have been afraid to read it in case the contents disappointed. Luckily I was taken in from the first page. Ghosts, nefarious relatives, England on the brink of a war, a heroine that everyone underestimates, and a bear that I wish had my back too, make this book more than just a pretty cover.

This is the Catalan edition for a Skinful of Shadows but I'm pretty sure this is the same cover as one of the English versions :) gorgeous!

I loved ‘The Lie Tree‘, and I‘m curious about this book, since I wanted to read more of Hardinge. It tells the story of a girl plagued by nightmares of ghosts tearing her apart, looking for the chance to possess her. She has a gift (curse?) passed down by her father‘s family..she can host ghosts in her body.

I‘d buy this just for the cover!

The plotting of this book is PERFECT. The story—about a powerful, corrupt family of necromancers during the reign of King Charles I & the orphan bastard girl who vows to bring them down—is intricately woven. The writing, though, is uneven. Take the way too frequent alliteration: from “pattering poplar trees” to “hollow horror” to “precariously perched.” 🙈 My opinion of this book is also precariously perched: I could go either way.

Getting some sickbed (well, sickcouch) #NewYearWhoDis reading done today. Discovering all of the protagonist‘s many names (Makepeace, Maud, Judith, & her true name, which I have yet to learn) is making me think of all the different names of my favorite heroine. I‘m partial to “Joan.” 😅

P.S. Where my #buffythevampireslayer fans at? I‘ll tag you in my many (usually non-sequitur, stretch) references, if you speak up! 😉

Starting my next #NewYearWhoDis book; bathing in the blood of the innocent. You know. Just your typical Sunday night.

The historical details are excellent and the concept is interesting, but it was hard for me to get into. This is the second Hardinge book in a row I‘ve felt meh about which makes me sad.

Day 3: Shadows

I am not usually a fantasy reader. However, on a recent trip to Ireland, I couldn‘t resist stopping at the young adult shelf in a little book shop in Lahinch. I thought since Ireland is such a magical place, I might pick up a book that includes ghosts and magic. I‘m about halfway through, it‘s a good story though I‘ll admit to struggling a little bit because this is not the type of reading I usually do. It is fun to try something new though!

I‘ve never read any Frances Hardinge before, but WOW was this good!! This is technically a Children‘s/YA book, but honestly I‘d recommend to anyone of any age. The writing is gorgeous, the characters are vivid, and the storytelling and magical realism element are totally unique. I had the pleasure of meeting Frances at Hay this year, & she is absolutely delightful - when she signed my book, she drew a goose! #author #impressed

I had a very stressful day yesterday- busy at work, long awaited Dr's appointment, then finished the day with unnecessary family drama.

Books are my distraction. Books save me from the world. I hope to really get into this one today.

This was such a gorgeous read 😭 I was hooked from the word go: and it was unlike ANYTHING I've ever read before 😍😍

All new! I hope to get to a store sometime today or tomorrow to pick up A Sky Full of Stars by Linda Williams Jackson to add to this stack.

Here is my modest December TBR stack because we all know I cannot stick to a reading plan. The tagged books has the #bestcover. It is so insanely pretty. Mostly I need to finish up the box of books I am sending to my sister and then I am looking forward to reading some fantasy and other books that she would never read. #jingleshelves

There is nothing slight or shallow about this book, it is uses a historic fantasy setting to explore deep themes of mother daughter relationships, trust and empathy. Makepeace character is fully realised, complex, engaging and nuanced. The plot is dark and full of page turning peril. Don't be put off by the YA label it is a deeply satisfying read for all ages. I loved the Liar Tree and I love this just as much.

I loved The Lie Tree SO much I knew investing in this one would pay off and it did - this UK edition is gorgeous! Shimmery foil leaves on the cover and then underneath is also amazing 🙀This edition also has dyed edges (but I couldn't get everything in one photo!) Well done, book designer! 👏🏻👏🏻
