Under the Tuscan Sun
Under the Tuscan Sun | Frances Mayes
A CLASSIC FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF UNDER MAGNOLIA Frances Mayeswidely published poet, gourmet cook, and travel writeropens the door to a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. In evocative language, she brings the reader along as she discovers the beauty and simplicity of life in Italy. Mayes also creates dozens of delicious seasonal recipes from her traditional kitchen and simple garden, all of which she includes in the book. Doing for Tuscany what M.F.K. Fisher and Peter Mayle did for Provence, Mayes writes about the tastes and pleasures of a foreign country with gusto and passion. Now with an excerpt from Frances Mayes's latest southern memoir, Under Magnolia

1. So many wonderful quotes, it‘s hard to pick just one. But this one from the tagged has always resonated with me.
2. My mom gave Furry Logic to me during a tough time. It made me smile. And the watercolor illustrations are simply lovely.

A re-read of an old favorite was how I fulfilled the #RemindsYouofaHappyPlace prompt for the #Booked2019 Winter challenge. I actually had a hard time choosing something for this prompt because I don't really have a dedicated "happy place". As such I thought reading about the first foreign country I ever traveled to would work. This is such a lovely travelogue that it was fun to pull it off the shelf and recall that warm Italian sun.

I've seen the movie and always liked it, but I wanted to read the book before my recent trip to Italy. It didn't happen but I read it today, having just returned.

The book is COMPLETELY different from the movie. I liked it, but it did lose me a few times. Perhaps had I known more of what to expect, I'd have liked it more.

Still, beautiful and makes me miss Italy. Also, bonus: recipes! Yum.

This wanderlust heart is made to travel. Pretty much everywhere I go I get so caught up in the culture or scenery that I'm never ready to come home. One of my favorites, though, was visiting the Alps in Germany. We were able to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle, took a cable car to the top of the Alps, and saw some cathedrals. There is so much history and culture there that I don't think I can ever see it all. #7DAYSGIVEAWAY

I‘m behind on #readingresolutions, so here‘s both #TravelTuesday and #WishfulWednesday! I studied in Florence during college, and planned to go back in 2016 to mark the 20th anniversary of that semester. But then my husband & I both lost jobs that year & we couldn‘t afford the trip. I wish to go back someday & someday I will! I loved both of these books for all their reminders of Italy—I read Bella Tuscany when I returned to Florence in 2006. 😊

I ended up enjoying this book more than I expected. There are sections that feel like filler, as other people have detailed, but overall, the story of the house restoration and the descriptions of Tuscany and Italian village life kept my interest. 3.5⭐️ The picture is from the Italian Piedmont because I've been there, but not to Tuscany. We don't always stay on the beaten path. #LetterU #LitsyAtoZ

LauraBrook I absolutely loved this book, but then again I read the bulk of it on Tuscany! I think if you've been to Italy it certainly makes reading this extra special. 3y

I started this the other morning, when I woke up really early and couldn't get back to sleep. I am enjoying the discoveries the author makes about her house, the property, and life in Italy. I seem to be fascinated by old houses lately. We've been watching Escape to the Country on Netflix, and I'm ready to pack up for the English countryside.

Mehso-so

I gave this book a so-so rating because I felt the author lost track of her story at the end. The first 150 pages were delightful and made me want to move to Tuscany. She was renovating an old stone house, finding herself after a divorce and learning to live like a true Italian. The last 150 pages felt like filler to make the book longer, and almost made me lose touch with the romance Tuscany has to offer. Still, I would recommend this story.

Lucas.Rencher Dang I was really looking forward to this one 3y

Rachel.Rencher @lovintoread Honestly, I felt the same way! I like the movie because she was a badass single woman who did what she wanted...but I mean the book is her true story so that's how I looked at it 3y

#Littens ! I'm planning on starting a book review blog with a goal of getting into publishing or education. Is there anything that you prefer to see in a book review? Are there any certain types of books you prefer to see reviewed? Let me know!

(Also hoping this will weed down by #TBR list 😉)

TongueTiedSLP11 Connections between the historical context and real life (at the time) would be beneficial. Commentary on the similarities and differences between the books social norms and current day would be interesting as well. 3y
Lucas.Rencher That's a great idea keep us posted and personally I like to see a breakdown of the book beginning middle and end with your thoughts on each then a breakdown of the book overall hope this helps! 3y
LectricSheep I definitely prefer to read more about your experience reading it (what else it reminded you of, what the overall tone was like, etc.) than plot points! 3y
See All 10 Comments
Lcsmcat I see we're all giving you radically different suggestions, but my preference is for comments on the writing style over the content. I'll read any plot if it's well written. 3y
readordierachel I second @LectricSheep I'd rather read your impressions and maybe a general overview than a plot summary. 3y
mabell Everyone has made great suggestions! I would add - how does it fit in the genre and how is it similar to/different from others that the reader may be familiar with. 3y
RanaElizabeth I think it always helps when reading reviews to know about somebody's genre biases. For instance, I will always rate forensic thrillers way higher than they may deserve just because I like them so much. 3y
melbeautyandbooks I agree with @ReadOrDieRachel and @LectricSheep- Overall impression. And @mabell- about the similarities/differences to other books/authors in that genre. And @RanaElizabeth- Genre biases or expectations. Example-I love all kinds of mystery/thrillers. My expectations for a cozy mystery are different from a police procedural or more hardcore dark and twisty mystery. 3y
andreadmw Do it! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I like when reviews are funny, tell me about the reviewer's perspective on the style and skill of writing, and when the reviewer shares a little (but not gobs!) about themselves. Have fun!! 3y
