Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk
Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk | Kathleen Rooney
Its the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-bein surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls, Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest-paid advertising woman in Americaa career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown. A love letter to city lifehowever shiny or sleazyLillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic; the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop.

Perhaps it is my age, that I love to walk, that I love big cities. Or that one of my favorite people is an octogenarian who speaks with such eloquence that I stop and listen to anything she has to say.
...I loved this book!

#DearDecember @Eggs I‘m a day late for #AgingCharacters but this current read also matches today‘s #BlackGoldCovers

marleed @TheEllieMo and @AlwaysBeenALoverOfBooks Might I say this book (and I audio‘d some of it while walking) is mellifluous! 5d

MargaretPinardAuthor I did too, and I‘m 38 and in Portland OR..,I guess I am a city walking girl but don‘t think that had anything to do with appreciating the tender pathos in this book. 💗 5d
marleed @Amiable I‘ve had this on my shelves for a bit. There‘s something about finally grabbing a TBR book and then giving it a 5-star that makes it extra special. 5d
marleed @8little_paws I find myself just staring at the cover. I think it represents the book well. 5d
marleed @MargaretPinardAuthor You are close to the age of the author! I love how the author wrote a woman 50 years her senior! 5d

Lillian reminisces her life on New Year‘s Eve in New York City. This is one of those that I should have read last year but did not...perhaps the way to end 2019?? #IllRemember #Movember

Cinfhen It can easily be a one sitting read and a lovely ode to NYC ~ perfect for this time of year 💚 (edited) 2w

Another book btw Pick and So-So. I really liked Lillian's character and learning about her advertising career in the 30s and 50s but the rest of the book was blah and too slow. However, Rooney's writing and structure was great. Also, the entire plot happened in one night. Hmmm.

I enjoyed how the walk Lillian takes on New Years Eve 1984 is interwoven with the story of her life in advertising in the 1920s, how she forged her way in a man‘s business and how she felt when that ended for motherhood. Lillian is an intriguing character; formidable, intelligent and enquiring yet with a sadness and a hard edge at times. An unusual read that makes you want to walk New York City, drink negronis and wear bright yellow tights!

I just adored this book @Caroline2 - thank you soooo much for sending it to me!

It‘s uplifting, it‘s sad, it‘s New York City....

I saved the last two chapters to read on my way home (a long day - been in the office since 7.15am 😬 ) and I‘m so glad I did as there popped up Rapper‘s Delight - one of my fave tracks ever! I‘m smiling to myself on the train... 😁🎵😁🎵

I have to admit, @Caroline2 I did emit rather a loud squeal when I saw the book - it‘s one I‘ve been wanting to read for ages, mainly because it‘s set in NYC.

Then there were bookmarks, chocolate, a Squirrel Nutkin postcard.... and a lovely note!

It‘s New Years Eve 1984 and Lillian Boxfish, aged 84(ish), is taking a walk through Manhattan. Formerly the highest paid advertising woman in the country, Lillian looks back on the highs and lows of a long life and career as she meets the diverse denizens populating a 1980s NYC in decline. Lillian‘s perceptions of the city and its people, both past and present, are so authentic, full of wisdom, generosity, and a welcome touch of the bitter.

Suet624 I love your reviews. 5mo

Having volunteered in nursing homes when I was younger, I know that the older people get, the more interesting stories they have to tell. You just have to be ready to sit back and go on a journey with them. I loved Lillian Boxfish's story. She is a character I want to keep with me and call up when I need strength.

I feel so empowered! 😄 They‘re all voracious readers and I can‘t keep up with them. Anyway, the book is on sale Kindle today Although it‘s fiction, it is based on the life of a remarkable sounding woman.
