Natchez Burning | Greg Iles
126 posts | 104 read | 97 to read
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the first novel in his Natchez Burning trilogywhich also includes The Bone Tree and the upcoming Mississippi Bloodan epic trilogy that interweaves crimes, lies, and secrets past and present in a mesmerizing thriller featuring Southern lawyer and former prosecutor Penn Cage. Raised in the southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering the African American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Once a crusading prosecutor, Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses even to speak in his own defense. Penn's quest for the truth sends him deep into his father's past, where a sexually charged secret lies. More chilling, this long-buried sin is only one thread in a conspiracy of greed and murder involving the vicious Double Eagles, an offshoot of the KKK controlled by some of the most powerful men in the state. Aided by a dedicated reporter privy to Natchez's oldest secrets and by his fiance, Caitlin Masters, Penn uncovers a trail of corruption and brutality that places his family squarely in the Double Eagles' crosshairs. With every step costing blood and faith, Penn is forced to confront the most wrenching dilemma of his life: Does a man of honor choose his father or the truth?

Greg Iles was recommended to me ages ago and I‘ve had this book in my shelf for years… finally got to in and I‘m a little disappointed I put it off for so long!

It‘s quite the #chunkster but I flew through it. A page-turner for sure. Looking forward to the next (and to go back to the prequel trilogy)

TrishB I‘ve enjoyed all his books so far. 6mo

Very well written, but a little “triggering” for me after some recent events. The story is based upon murders happening during the civil rights movement. Lots of good & evil & grey areas.

The pages magically turn themselves as the reader is sucked into racial and political madness in Mississippi from 1964 to 2001. KKK murders and plots unfold as the FBI and local police department become involved when a couple of reporters and the mayor become heavily and personally involved in racial justice cases to obtain justice for blacks and two white females who were murdered decades ago. They literally have to dig up the past. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
@OriginalCyn620

Today‘s Prompt: OVER 500 PAGES

I haven‘t read this biggie, but it is on my shelf.

This book has 788 pages.

Have YOU read it?

OriginalCyn620 Haven‘t read it! Chunksters scare me! 5y
Amiable Don‘t be afraid of chunksters! I haven‘t read this one, no. But so far this year I‘ve read more than 20 books that were over 500 pages! The biggest one was 1,100 pages —“Truman” by David McCullough. If a book is really good, don‘t you just want more of it? 🙂 5y
See All 11 Comments
SilversReviews @Amiable Thank you for the encouragement. 😍 5y
Amiable @SilversReviews The easiest way to get through a chunkster is to take it in stages. I record my progress on Goodreads every 100 pages. 100 pages is basically nothing, right? So breaking a 1,000-page book down that way is just 10 sets of 100 pages. Piece of cake. 🙂 5y
Reagan I only have Mississippi Blood and Natchez Burning left and then I am done the Penn Cage series ☹️ they are so intense, I read them very slowly 😂 5y
SilversReviews @Amiable That is a terrific idea...thank you. ♥️ 5y
SilversReviews @Reagan-reads Thanks for your comments. A friend has read all of them. (edited) 5y

Kaye Oh, I‘m sorry, Misty ! I just now saw this post. Thanks very much for the info ! That helps. 6y
Kaye That‘s where my question was! The Penn Cage section ? There are 4 books listed before Natchez Burning. Are they written like Lonesome Dove, though, because publication dates and dates they were written don‘t match in the order the story is told, from younger years to older years of the main characters. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kaye I haven‘t Lonesome Dove 🤭 but this is the order that they are in. I would definitely read the Natchez Burning trilogy in order. I didn‘t read the others in order although looking back I should have! 6y

Part historical crime novel, part family drama, this 800 page behemoth jumps between the 1960‘s and just after hurricane Katrina. I found it remarkably engaging if emotionally taxing. Sometimes the brutality is raw in its description. I‘d read some criticism that it was unnecessary, but I disagree - Looking away from it to protect our delicate sensibilities is what allowed it to go on so long. Don‘t finish without the next book ready to start.

Wow. Just wow. The sweet ladies who live down the way brought me this book and the two that follow it for me to read. I‘m a third of the way through this and I‘m wondering 1) how have I not heard of this author? 2) why is he not a household name? & 3) how has this book not been optioned by a premium cable network for a stand alone series? I agree with Stephen King‘s quote on the cover: “I defy you to start it and find a way to put it down.” 😳
