Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

Pickpick

3 new releases, but Beartown is the only one worth reading. I cannot say enough good things about this book! This is Fredrik Backman at his best and I loved all the characters and how raw the writing is. Highly recommend this book to everyone! An important read.

LiteraryinPA That's good to know. I feel like I've reached a saturation point with Backman because he's published so much since Ove, but maybe I should try it anyway. (edited) 7y
maria.adey I agree @LiteraryinLititz but Beartown is very different from his other works and it's now my favourite of his books! 7y

Such an important read about rascism and police brutality in America. Thank you Angie Thomas for bringing Starr Carter's voice to life - recommend this book to everyone! #blacklivesmatter #thehateugive

Confession: I have always thought YA paranormal was a weird genre that held no appeal. But this was my first book in the genre and I loved it! Great story, great writing, great relationships - and not at all cliche. There's so much potential in this story and I can't wait to see where it's going to go in the next book!

What a great anthology! So many diverse voices and stories in one small book. Recommend for everyone! I loved the suggested reading list at the end too - now I have so many more books to check out :)

Loved this book right from the start! The first chapter was so raw and emotional that I was totally captivated. The story in itself was fascinating, but Bui's honest portrayal of her family and their strengths and shortcomings made me love this book. 5 stars!

Ruin and Rising | Leigh Bardugo

Did this series really need 3 books? I wanted to love it but I just couldn't get into it. I didn't like Alina in Shadow and Bone, but I thought she had so much potential to grow in the trilogy. Sadly a lot of the characters felt flat to me and the plot was repetitive and kind of boring. I did like the series, but I felt a lack of connection to the characters and story, so it wasn't a favourite. Stick to Six of Crows! #grisha #shadowandbone

A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

😍 What a turn-around from ACoTaR!! I absolutely loved this book! The story moved so much quicker, the characters had so much depth, and I totally ship Feyre and Rhysand! Loved the back stories and character growth and I can't wait to read more. Maas is back on top! #acotar #youngadult #fantasy #sarahjmaas

Sarah, what happened?! I discovered Throne of Glass this year and couldn't wait to read this one, but it was such a let down. The characters felt very one dimensional and I didn't find Feyre and Tamlin's love story compelling. The action picked up in the last quarter, but overall I found this book cheesy and kind of boring.

Loved Crooked Kingdom!! I enjoyed Six of Crows, but I thought Bardugo really took it to the next level in this book. The plot was so smart and fast moving and the characters were just as awesome! Highly recommend this series!

Radio Girls | Sarah-Jane Stratford
Mehso-so

I loved the time period and learning all about the BBC and Hilda Matheson. It was so infuriating how all the women were treated and props to Stratford for making their struggles real and relatable to her readers. However, I didn't love the writing and I found the pace of the book a bit slow.

Voyager | Diana Gabaldon

This book could have been so much shorter (Diana is all about the details), but I still loved it! I'm only sad more of the book didn't take place in Scotland. Can't wait for season 3 to start!

The Likeness: A Novel | Tana French
Pickpick

I didn't like The Likeness quite as much as In the Woods, but still a very well written book. I didn't find the murder mystery as interesting, but the characters are very compelling and just as heartbreaking as in Tana French's first novel.

Behind Closed Doors | B. A. Paris

nope nope nope. This wasn't a bad book, it was just far too disturbing for me! I couldn't put it down once I started, but the content was so intense. Props to the author for making the desperation of the main character so real, but you need to be emotionally prepared for this one!

So beautifully written! I was instantly sucked into this book and loved Lark, the world of Jeru, and Harmon's prose! Tiras was a little too controlling for me to totally fall in love with him and Lark, but overall I loved the story.

I'm of two minds about this book. I liked the story and thought the ending was really sweet. It was definitely a relevant social commentary on xenophobia in the UK, but the cast of characters was overwhelming and difficult to keep track of. I liked the story and I love Melina Marchetta, but the story felt a little heavy handed and I'm not sure this genre was her forte. That said, I'll read anything she writes and kudos for trying something new!

Wow, I really had no idea what I was getting into with this one! Disturbing, but very well written and unlike anything I've read before. I didn't feel the last quarter of the book was as strong, but Greenwood definitely created some moving and memorable characters.

Britt-Marie Was Here | Fredrik Backman
Pickpick

I thought this book started off a little slow, but it got me before the end. I've also read A Man Called Ove and I love how Backman's characters start off as kind of irritating, but you always grow to love them! I think I preferred this story and found it incredibly sweet.

In the Woods | Tana French
Pickpick

The ending of this book killed me! Finally got around to starting this series and loved it! I loved that this book was spooky and intriguing without being too scary. The characters are so well written - I loved the relationship between Rob and Cassie. Cassie was definitely the hero of this story for me. Can't wait to read more!

I cannot sort out my feelings about this book - it was so intense! I'm not sure I loved it yet, but I couldn't help myself from rushing into the next book! One thing is certain, Tahir knows how to write characters that make you feel! I like that Laia is not your typical heroine and that she finds her strength in herself and her relationships rather than through physical strength. A great start to a series!

This story did not speak to me as strongly as it seems to have affected most people. I've read a lot of WWII fiction, which might be why, but this novel felt flat to me and I thought the characters lacked depth. I was interested to hear about the siege of Malta, which I knew nothing about, but the characters weren't engaging for me.

Empire of Storms | Sarah J Maas

The depth of this series impresses me more with each new novel! This is the first book where I finally got into Manon's character and I really enjoyed Lorcan and Elide's storyline. I can't imagine how Maas is going to resolve this series in just one more book, but I hope Chaol returns! #throneofglass #bookseries #booklove

I can see the appeal this book might hold for some people, but I found it so boring! The narrative style didn't really work for me and I found myself skimming a lot of sections. The premise of the story was sweet, but the plot felt lacking. A+ for the cover art though! #notforme

LiteraryinPA I felt the same way about her book Olive Kitteridge. It just felt... dull. 8y

Homegoing: A novel | Yaa Gyasi
Pickpick

Homegoing was so fantastic and well written! I cant believe that this is Yaa Gyasi's first novel or that she published such an incredible book at the age of 26! That each character is so beautifully written and well developed within so few pages is an impressive feat.

I've been seeing this book everywhere, but it didn't live up to the hype for me. There were some interesting relationships, but overall I found it kind of boring and the character's frustrating. I just couldn't bring myself to care about a bunch of rich kids and their trust fund.
