The Bird and the Sword
The Bird and the Sword | Amy Harmon
"Swallow, daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them 'til they've time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, 'til the hour. You won't speak and you won't tell, you won't call on heaven or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, daughter. Stay alive. " The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn't speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would sell his soul and lose his son to the sky. My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother's words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free. But freedom will require escape, and I'm a prisoner of my mother's curse and my father's greed. I can't speak or make a sound, and I can't wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a bird?

The dying words of Lark‘s mother cursed her to live without a voice and bound her father‘s life to Lark‘s. For if she dies, he dies. She cursed the king and his son as well. Her father wants to be king more than anything. In a brilliant move, the prince (now king) takes Lark as a hostage thwarting her father from making a move on the throne. Lark soon learns that the king has a magical secret/curse too. They need each other to be free.

Ieri c'è stata la mia tappa nel Review Tour su questo bel romanzo. Scusate il ritardo con cui ve ne parlo. . . Un piccolo frammento, trovate il resto sul Blog:

It was fun when the narrator couldn‘t speak, read, or write. Then the author shot all that to hell and it stopped being interesting. Back to the library with you!

4.5/5 stars
Had I known this book was:
1) a high fantasy *romance *;
2) a new adult book; and
3) self published
I probably wouldn't have picked it up...Now, having read and finished this book...I realize that I would have been deserving of a swift kick to the noggin had I passed up this gem for those reasons!

"You don't need wings to fly."

Amy Harmon sure has a way with words. The Bird and the Sword is beautifully written and quickly became one of my favorite reads last year. It has fantasy, love, battle, finding and loving oneself. I don't really categorize this book as fantasy..I see it more as romance that has fantasy in it.

I bought this book a while ago and finally got around to reading it. The magic system in this world is pretty interesting. I liked that hint at the beginning of where the story will go. I kept thinking back to what it all meant as the story went on. It's a fun fantasy book. I look forward to reading the sequel.

JazzFeathers I've heard lots of good things about this book. And that cover 😍 Doesn't really look like a fantasy book cover, but l love it 😊 3y

Thank you Amy Harmon! The Bird and the Sword was a sweet YA-fantasy/romance. I was weary about starting bc of the protagonist not having the ability to speak. I'm big on dialogue! But this author is a magnificent storyteller. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a fantasy setting, a little action, and a lot of love. Happy to say the "mean guy/timid girl" act doesn't last long (I hate that) and a great standalone! #yafantasy #amyharmon #romance

Man, was that a waste of time. Sure, Amy Harmon is a good writer. But nice prose isn't enough. You also need originality, which this story severely lacked. Worse, the hero keeps saying things like "I think I'll keep you" to the heroine while also calling her "woman" repeatedly, like that's cute (it's not), & his brother brings up how different she is from the brown-skinned girls (nope, not kidding). So yeah, I'd steer clear. ★★☆☆☆.

#currentlyreading | idk for all the raves I see about this book, it's going like a typical high-fantasy romance so far...

This didn't do it for me. Maybe I was distracted since it was an audiobook. I just never got absorbed by the story.

I've been blue lately. My husband says "go outside! Get some sun!" I grab my earbuds and the dog and head up the street. Hmm, funny noise. I turn around to find a swarm of bees approaching. I promptly lay face down on the sidewalk, Great Dane lounging next to me, and when they pass, I immediately go back home and seal all doors and windows. Audio booking from inside today for obvious reasons ?????

As much as I love this story, there was one major flaw that was hard to ignore. The protagonist is supposedly unable to work her magic on the Gifted, but she manages to magically influence the king, who is Gifted. So that was a structural problem for me in the story. Otherwise, it was amazing! The world and idea is original, which is refreshing!

I did not expect to become so engrossed in this fairy tale but I was completely swept away. Lark is both gifted and cursed. She is being used a political pawn between her father, who equally disdains and needs her, and the king, who sees her as the tool he requires to save his kingdom. While Lark is mute she is not powerless and it is time she makes herself heard. There are curses, battles, and magical abilities. And yes- it is a kissing book.

It started out slow but I'm a sucker for a spunky female. A few twists and all the elements came together for an unexpected and thrilling finish. The audiobook is inane. Skip that and go straight for the print version. Can't wait to read number 2 in the series, Spring 2017.

So hooked. Found the audiobook Tuesday. Got through nine chapters while I was cleaning. Next came the kindle book. I had to have a physical copy though. This beauty came in the mail today. Lark has totally sucked me in. I want to just devour this book. At the same time, the sooner I finish it, the sooner it will be over. 😢

I loved this! About a handful of things too real-world for me since everything else was fantasy, but the uniqueness of the story made those things easy to overlook. Loved the writing. Great, fast read. And I ADORED that the heroine had power that wasn't wrapped up in a sword & fighting! She uses words. So fabulous!

Sometimes I get a yearning for a fantasy with a strong female protag that begs for a reflexive feminist reading. This did the trick. ✔️✔️✔️

So beautifully written! I was instantly sucked into this book and loved Lark, the world of Jeru, and Harmon's prose! Tiras was a little too controlling for me to totally fall in love with him and Lark, but overall I loved the story.

I just finished this beauty. I have always loved Amy Harmon but this surprised me. I didn't know if she could pull off a fantasy book but she totally did . I will say I don't read a lot of fantasy so not sure if that plays a role in me liking it. I also adored the romance.

I have no words. This book left me breathless and as silent as the main character Lark was in the beginning of this wonderful tale. Harmon has a way of telling a story. The tension, angst, and love is so strongly communicated that my heart broke during a few scenes. The way the characters feel and act just resonates throughout the tale. Every action has a consequence, and every word has power. For some of the characters, that is literal.
