?CUE THEME MUSIC! Softly now—I'm reviewing.
Oh gosh was this fun. The preteen in me squeaks with joy that this exists and even more that I got to read it written by my favorite MG author. A+ Marvel references and squirrel puns. "Squirgle" is possibly my favorite super hero concept. (In LEGO Marvel, she flies like a squirrel and chucks rodents at people. ?)
Recommended for 10-13yos hands down, but also to anyone who's been an awkward teen.

I listened to #KissingInAmerica this past week and really enjoyed it! I'll warn you, though--the title is misleading, and if you expect a YA romance with lots of kissing, you'll be disappointed. It's not a romance, but it is a love story. I laughed and cried. 4/5 stars.
I'm going to have to buy a physical copy because I love the cover so.

I read this at the fresh age of 19 during a college bible study, and I can honestly say that it changed the way I saw myself and my day-to-day purpose in life. If it weren't for this book, it might have taken years before I realized where my passion and abilities coincided and how they weren't a mistake. I've done one more Max Lucado bible study since then (Story) and really enjoy his teaching style and way with words.

BookChats Awesome! I just found out that Max Lucado's church is in San Antonio so I guess I should pick up one of his books now. Looks like this is a good place to start 😊 8y

The Dreamer is a YA "Outlander" graphic novel set during the American Revolution. If you ❤ Hamilton, he makes some appearances! AND all 3 volumes are half off on ComiXology right now. There's still plenty of time left this #socksunday to read comics! ?#thedreamer #dreamercomic #shereadscomics

I didn't realize that the whole book would be about Yaqui's problem with Piddy (the narrator), I just thought it was a provocative title. This was a realistic story of a Cuban-American 15yo in Queens dealing with a bully. But of course it's more than that—it's about moving and friendship and secrets and fear and abuse and family, too. I loved the #ownvoices details and Piddy's relationship with her Ma and (especially) Ma's BFF Lila.

"It's not Land O'Lakes, if that's what you're asking."
"Land O'Lakes! What are we, Bill and Melinda Gates? I buy store-brand butter. The name on my butter is exactly equal to the name of the store I bought it from."

This whole scene is just ?.

raelaschoenherr It totally made me want to try that butter! 8y
Laalaleighh Land o lakes butter is great though! 8y
Laalaleighh We buy fancy European butter 🙈 this character would hate me. 8y
veritylane @Laalaleighh Considering that's exactly what he eats (and converts her to), you'll have to read it! 😂 8y

I inhaled this book, which is par for the course with Reid's novels. Again--and I say this for all of her books--the characters are true(r)-to-life humans with contradictions and complexities, who even in their most flawed moments couldn't be annoying if they tried. There are no bad guys, just people. There are no simple characters, just evolving ones. There are no easy answers or pat endings, just bittersweet pauses punctuating lives. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

raelaschoenherr I loved this one! Sam totally got me 😍 8y

veritylane @raelaschoenherr Have you read any of her others? I think this one might be my favorite. She's pretty, I have my only insta-buy author right now (Though Sabaa Tahir might become one soon!) 8y
raelaschoenherr I've read Maybe in Another Life and After I Do. MiAL was my least favorite of the three. This one may be my top one although AID was great too. I agree, she does a great job showing the good and bad sides of everyone! 8y

From last week's #socksunday. My husband and I LOVED An Ember in the Ashes, so of course we preordered A Torch Against the Night! Multiplied feels and Helene's an additional POV. 😍

Everything Is Illuminated | Jonathan Safran Foer

I just returned Everything is Illuminated to the library. The first chapter was HILARIOUS, and then it switched POVs and I got bored. That top shelf is my TBR, on which I need to make some serious progress, so I'm 100% OK with DNFing books right now! Did you read it? Did you like it? Should I pick it up again sometime?

I-read-and-eat Lovely shelfs! Give Everything is Illuminated another chance. I had some trouble getting into it but now it's one of my favourite books 😄 📘 8y
veritylane Thanks @I-read-and-eat! I'll add it to my list of books to revisit ☺️ 8y

Absolutely loving this as an audiobook, which is especially refreshing after DNFing another audiobook this week that was just so poorly narrated. This one makes Miranda sound like a 12yo Veronica Mars. My elementary self would have ADORED this novel!

Laalaleighh @WordWaller said we should all follow you and so random but oh my gosh I love your socks!!! 8y
ImaginativeMom I loved this book! (Though I didn't do audiobook, admittedly.) 8y
LiteraryinLawrence I love this book! I teach it in my 7th grade class and the kids love all the twists. :) 8y

thesquirrelnextdoor If I'm remembering correctly, this book has ties to A Wrinkle in Time right? I haven't read this yet, but we talked about it in a children's lit class I took in college. 8y

My boys were shy meeting "the author of Squirrel Girl" but we're giggling all the way home about Frimplepants the unicorn. These are a treat, and the creatures and characters were fun to voice. I think the boys will like reading it to themselves someday, too! (Soon?)

Mehso-so

The omniscient narration felt kind of sloppy at the beginning (it may have been more clear reading--though I have the book, I actually listened to the audio on my commute). Lots of language--hence the pseudonym? It was fine. I liked the descriptions and protagonists, but the mystery was so-so.

raelaschoenherr I enjoyed this but it took a little bit to hook me. That was not the case at all for the next two! I think it helps to know the main characters now. 8y

30% in: I'm definitely interested in Elias' story. Laia's...not so much, mainly because she is so victimized. Which I get, and she'll probably have a stronger arc since she has so much room for growth. I'm hoping the little mouse will become a lioness in her own right. 🐭➡🦁 (100%: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

raelaschoenherr This one is so awesome!! 8y

I'm #teamcap in the MCU, but comics Cap can be kind of a jerk. Comics Civil War is more political, has more gratuitous butt shots, but I think it's also more thought-provoking. It has approximately 4 billion cameos—like a Where's Waldo of super heroes! The movie was more fun, lighthearted (& Cap's 💪🏻 = ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Maybe in Another Life: A Novel | Taylor Jenkins Reid

Pickpick

This book is both concept- and character-driven. Each character is fleshy (Reid's characters are always so lifelike she's now an insta-buy author for me), and the womance between Hannah and Gabby rivals my favorite bromances. It's impossible to not have a bestie crush on Gabby after reading this!
