Miss Jane Fairfield has made a career of social disaster. She wears outrageous gowns and says even more outrageous things. The only reason she's invited anywhere is because of her immense dowry--which is all part of her plan to avoid marriage and keep the fortune-hunters at bay.Mr. Oliver Marshall is the illegitimate son of a duke. His acceptance in society is tenuous as it is. If he wants any kind of career at all, he must do everything right. He doesn't need to come to the rescue of the wrong woman. He certainly doesn't need to fall in love with her. But there's something about the lovely, courageous Jane that he can't resist...even though it could mean the ruin of them both. The books in the Brothers Sinister series:. The Governess Affair (free prequel novella)1. The Duchess War1. A Kiss for Midwinter (a companion novella to The Duchess War)2. The Heiress Effect3. The Countess Conspiracy4. This is my least favorite of the series so far. I loved (most) of the characters and Titus is the kind of villain that scares me the most - one who does evil but truly believes he‘s doing the right thing. It‘s just that this felt like such a slow burn that I got bored and the reasons for our couple being separated were ridiculous. I wanted to slap them both and lock them in a room until they came to their senses. A low pick. (3/3.5 stars)

Really, really enjoyed this one! I like its atypical structure and its "fuck the man" vibes. This Brothers Sinister boxset just keeps getting stronger! (Though I will admit to being at a loss after the next book, as those are all the titular brothers, yes??)

khooliha Ah, Free gets a book and the other is a novella about people I've yet to meet. Makes sense! 3y

Revisiting this review. I gave it a so-so when I first read it but said that it might have just been that I was in a bad mood at the time. Now, revisiting it, I can confirm that I was just in a bad mood. I think the scene in the botanic gardens is my favorite scene of the whole series, and I find Oliver to be a highly relatable protagonist.

Two sisters striving for seemingly impossible relationships while trying to navigate a difficult home situation. It was a great story with some emotional hits that I really enjoyed.

I'm not sure if this book wasn't as good as the earlier ones, or if I'm just grouchy from reading too many of these in a row. What I do know is that I think Emily and Anjan deserved a book of their own, not just to be side characters in someone else's book.

I definitely need to take a break from this series now.

CorLie I love Emily & Anjan in this book. (Their parallel moments of awesome are among my favorite romance book scenes ever). But I'm not sure there's enough "story" there for their own book - also I like the contrast between them and the main couple. 5y
effani @CorLie Yeah, you're probably right that there's not enough there for their own book. I just ended up caring more about them than about the main couple, and it's disappointing that the disabled heroine/Indian hero pairing was a side story in a book about abled white people. 5y

This was such a fun book. I loved the whole plot with an heiress being intentionally rude to everyone to avoid marriage

e.queue Fun! I‘m jumping into this series with #4 today. Hope they work as standalones too. I‘ve heard great things about this author! 5y

What do you do if you don't want to get married but you're an heiress? Make sure nobody wants to marry you. In fact it takes quite a clever woman to work that out, and this is her story.

Loved it!

#romantsy

CoffeeK8 I love this series! 5y
ScientistSam @CoffeeK8 it's so good! 5y
fenchxrch Are there other Courtney Milan books or series that you would recommend? 5y
ScientistSam @fenchxrch I think I've only read a contemporary romance by her outside of this series, but it was really good. It's the second in a trilogy (which I didn't realize when I read it first) called Hold Me. 5y

The second book in The Brothers Sinister series is a historical #romantsy with a message about conformity. Miss Jane Fairfield is rich and eligible and desperate not to marry, so she dresses and acts outrageously. Oliver is an aspiring politician who needs a quiet “wren” type of wife. They meet and sparks fly. There‘s a cute secondary romance between her sister and a South Asian law student.

Centique Aw I loved this one too! 😍 6y

Oh. Em. Gee. Like thirty pages until the end and WOW. Wish I could spoiler halfway through a post but I'll just say there's a bit that was really moving to me and tied in with earlier, seemingly inconsequential details 😭

Man this has a lot more layers than the first book. They're both fabulous in giving a female MC enough autonomy for a modern woman to root for but still acknowledging the restrictions of the time period but I love how we're getting other character storylines woven in here. "I'm your older brother, You have to make me feel useful." "No I don't. You're a grown man. Find a use for yourself." ✌️✌️✌️

I'm really surprised by how much I am loving this. Not because Courtney Milan isn't a great romance author (she is, this is my fourth work by her) but simply that I think this is outshining the first Brothers Sinister book by far. Oliver, one of the romantic leads, was featured in the first book but I really wasn't that interested in his character before now.

Aw, man, I love Courtney Milan's books. This one gave me everything I've come to expect from her: fully developed characters who inspire each other to stretch, organic relationships, compelling family dynamics, and Victorian social concerns with deep relevance to modern audiences. Here, that means voting reform, disability issues, class divisions, women's rights, and racism. Milan handles it all so, so well.

Plus, the hero's a TOTAL Slytherin.

Centique This is one of my favourites of hers! So good 😍 7y

You know when you start a new series by a new-to-you author and it just defies all your expectations and makes you fall head over heels in book love? That's what happened w me & the 1st book, The Duchess War.

But I hesitated - should I plunge into the 2nd book? What if it's not as great? Well seeing as I read The Heiress Effect in one day (like I did the 1st book) it was excellent. Perhaps it was even better! It was quite a romp!

CoffeeK8 So glad you liked these books! 7y
PurpleyPumpkin I looked up this series and found a prequel novella, The Governess Affair. Have you read that one yet? 7y

The Heiress Effect is now my favourite book from The Brothers Sinister series. I absolutely fell in love with the characters of Jane and Oliver. Individually, seeing the two characters come into their own was absolutely brilliant. Seeing the two of them fall in love with each other was spectacular! I loved the whole thing start to finish. I 100% recommend this book and series if you're looking for kickass, feminist historical romances.

Another winner in my romance reading project! This is def the best historical romance I've read: it felt really like the time period (1860s) was integral to the story. Voting reform for working class men, tiny details about social interactions, scientific/medical advancements, attitudes to illnesses and disability, and lives of immigrants of colour in Britain. I really liked the complex believable characters. Nice blend of romantic and funny!

silentrequiem I discovered Courtney Milan recently and she's fast becoming one of my favorite romance writers. 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @silentrequiem what's your fav book by her that you've read? 7y
silentrequiem @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I really loved Hold Me, which is the sequel to Trade Me (which I also liked). They are both contemporary romances but diverse and smart. For historical, I just finished The Duchess War and have the next in the series queued up. 7y

I've been having trouble getting into books that aren't romance for some reason lately. I keep trying to read other books, but haven't been in the mood to read them. I pick up a romance and I can't seem to put it down. This book was great. A very compelling story. I've read the others in the series and this one may be my favorite so far!

Lovely! This was a "I'm staying up until 2am to read this as it's bloody awesome" book. Jane was a delight to read about - someone who absolutely doesn't give a flying fig about what people think about her. Her connection with Oliver was off the charts hot - can't blame her either, I have a real soft spot for a red-headed man! He was a bit obstinate, but he got there in the end. A definite winner! ??

I'm on a romance reading binge & I loved this. Jane is just my favorite sort of heroine & Emily is fantastic as well. My only problem now is what do I read next? The next installment of Tessa Dare's Castles Ever After or Courtney Milan's Brothers Sinister. Decisions decisions! #romantsy #OSRBC
