The Ides of March
The Ides of March: A Novel | Thornton Wilder
15 posts | 4 to read
Drawing on such unique sources as Thornton Wilder's unpublished letters, journals, and selections from the extensive annotations Wilder made years later in the margins of the book, Tappan Wilder's Afterword adds a special dimension to the reissue of this internationally acclaimed novel. The Ides of March, first published in 1948, is a brilliant epistolary novel set in Julius Caesar's Rome. Thornton Wilder called it "a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic." Through vividly imagined letters and documents, Wilder brings to life a dramatic period of world history and one of history's most magnetic, elusive personalities. In this inventive narrative, the Caesar of history becomes Caesar the human being. Wilder also resurrects the controversial figures surrounding Caesar -- Cleopatra, Catullus, Cicero, and others. All Rome comes crowding through these pages -- the Rome of villas and slums, beautiful women and brawling youths, spies and assassins.

My March recap (by the way, I am defining March as through today as I had a couple of books to finish up.) I read 8 books & got about 40% through two more. Not as much as I wanted but it was another tough work month. I took part in 5 buddy reads & one for my book club & one for a library challenge. I actually liked most everything I read but Cultish & The Other Bennet Sister were my Top 2 favorites for the month.

March is always a tricky time of year as a student. Mid-terms are approaching so my free time gets lessened. I tried to keep my list light and low-pressure. 😊 So here‘s my #BookSpin list for March!

My wife Sheri had a fun idea for our date night on this Ides of March. We‘re doing a mini-marathon of HBO‘s “Rome.” We‘re almost at the episode with the infamous assassination of Julius Caesar. She even prepared a small feast for us. My wife is a genius. #IdesOfMarch #DateMarch

Ruri_kaichou What a fun and creative date night! 6y

Feel like I got a lot done today! Wrote my pen pal a letter. New month means new monthly #bulletjournal spread. Using washi tape and stickers in this one, left over from my scrapbooking days. Can‘t buy books from this month on until June! Part of my goals. Didn‘t even look at the Amazon Monthly Kindle Deals today.

One more month before we leave for Ireland. Gotta start picking my books! We‘ll be there a month so they‘ve got to travel well. 🤓♥️

MicheleinPhilly A month??? Lucky you! 👍🏼 7y

britt_brooke So pretty! 7y
Gabypen Oh wow, Ireland! That‘s my number one place I‘ve always want it to go. Have fun for me! ♥️ 7y
EvieBee @MicheleinPhilly @ReadOrDieRachel Thank you! We‘re hoping it‘s not too cold. 🤓 7y
EvieBee @Jess7 @britt_brooke 🤗♥️ (edited) 7y
EvieBee @Gabypen Really?! That‘s awesome. We are going there to serve in unassigned territory. My husband and I pioneer so we‘d like to see if it‘s a place we‘d be willing to move to permanently. 7y
MicheleinPhilly I was there in March (20 years ago 😬) and it wasn‘t too bad. That could have been all of the Guinness warming me up though. 7y
EvieBee @MicheleinPhilly Haha! I can‘t wait to taste the local brews. I‘m also dying to try that “scrumpy” cider that makes people brawl. I have a feeling it will put me to sleep. 😎😁 7y
Gabypen No way! That‘s amazing! I pioneer too, as well as my fam. We actually moved to OK from FL to help out. I have plans to travel for a few months to another country after I graduate, keeping Ireland in mind. 😂 Enjoy, I can‘t wait to hear about your trip! 7y
EvieBee @Gabypen Those are great goals and so happy to hear you and your family are already serving! I‘ll be sure to post pics. We‘ll be in the Lake District which translates to the boonies. 😄 7y
Texreader That‘s gorgeous 7y
TNbookworm So pretty! 7y
EvieBee @Texreader @TNbookworm Thank you! 🤓♥️ 7y
BooksForEmpathy Ahhh so exciting! I recently went down a rabbit hole and watched a ton of videos on bullet journaling - looks like you love to do it! I think I might finally buy one since you make it looks so pretty and fun. Also, Ireland!!!! 7y
EvieBee @BooksForEmpathy Thank you! I think you should! Those videos can be overwhelming but so fun. But once you buy the journal the world is your oyster! Keep us posted. You travel a lot so I can see that turning into a lot of creative spreads. 🤓🤗 (edited) 7y
JaclynW Very pretry bullet journal! 💕 And Ireland for a month! Wow! It's lovely! What city will you be staying in? And what is pioneering?? 7y
EvieBee @JaclynW Thank you! 🤓🤗 We‘ll be staying in Cavan County, and it will be a working trip, not a vacation. But we will do the tourist thing the last leg of the trip. Pioneering is volunteer ministry work my husband and I do full time. Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated! ♥️♥️ (edited) 7y
JaclynW @EvieBee Oh cool! That sounds like a great experience! I haven't been to that area in Ireland. I'm sure it's lovely like the rest of the country. One of my favorite things about Ireland is the people. It sounds like with your work, you will get to really know the people. I could talk about lots of things about Ireland but Litsy's 451 character maximum makes it tough to fit it all in! 😉😄 ⬇️ 7y
JaclynW @EvieBee If you can fit Dublin in, that's my favorite. I love cities!! There are lots of cool bookish places to visit there. Literary tours and museums (James Joyce). The Long Hall and Book of Kells at Trinity College is worth it. Trim Castle (where they filmed Braveheart) is near-ish to you, that's cool. Cliffs of Moher on the west coast is gorgeous! So is Kylemore Abbey. Glendalough is a beautiful monastic site, you can do some hiking there. ⬇️ 7y
JaclynW @EvieBee SO many more lovely things! Let me know if you have specific questions! Enjoy!! 7y
EvieBee @JaclynW Those all sound wonderful and I‘ve heard the same thing about the people! Dublin is top priority! Want to have a couple of days so as not to rush. Can‘t decide on the must-do pubs! Also places to eat. I feel overwhelmed by the options. I‘ve got the bookish things down lol! Also can‘t decide on which beaches to visit. East or West? South? I‘d love to email! If you‘re comfortable. 7y
JaclynW @EvieBee It is overwhelming! There are so many choices! I'm happy to correspond via email and hopefully I can be of some assistance. Send me your email and we can go from there. 😊 7y
EvieBee @JaclynW Awesome! Thank you! It‘s eviebee48 at gmail dot com. 7y
