I‘ve had this book since I was a little girl, and I loved it so much! Now looking back, I realize that it had a big impact on my interest in space and science fiction. Goes to show that giving a book to a child can really change their world. Thanks, Dad. ♥️💫

How to Stop Time | Matt Haig
post image
Pickpick

After loving Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig, I‘m ecstatic that I really liked How to Stop Time! It‘s an amazing blend of Romance, Historical Fiction, and a touch of Science Fiction. The plot of the book itself is unique as well; a man who ages very, very slowly. He‘s struggling emotionally with his past, which I found so refreshing. It was fast-paced and fun, yet thought-provoking at the same time. And the writing! *Italian chef kiss* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Blind Date | R. L. Stine
post image

@readsusieread This is how we have our blind date with a book. Instead on patrons picking a book out based on a clue, the books are curated based on a survey they fill out letting us know what‘s their favorite book, author, genres, etc. It‘s a pretty small college, so the library has this luxury of giving more personal selections.

It‘s been so much fun picking them out and imagining where these books will take them! 💝

readsusieread Oh my goodness! This is lovely! I may have to steal this in the future! 7y

It pains me to say I wasn't in love with this book. I think the biggest difficulty I had was the narrator's voice; I was never able to connect with her on a deeper level. I now understand I know nothing about how mental illness really makes a person feel. I‘m so glad this book exist for what it's done for some many people personally. However, I just never had that special connection with the book. I still love you so much, Sylvia.🖤 ⭐️⭐️

Les Misrables | Victor Hugo

It‘s official! I‘ve started Les Mis!

I‘m so excited about this. I‘ve wanted to dedicate to reading a big book, so this year I‘ve chosen this beauty/beast of a classic. Each month I‘ll read 100 pages, which I think is much more realistic than reading it in one take. Just read January‘s section and I‘m loving it so far. Excited to see where Hugo takes me next!

(Benedict has the same expression that I had starting this)

Old Man's War | John Scalzi

Mehso-so

Read this because everyone who knows science fiction has at least heard of this book. I love John Scalzi, this being my fifth one. Sad to say I didn‘t love it as much as I was hoping. While this isn‘t violent or gory, it is very much a “military sci-fi”, which I don‘t really like. I want my sci-fi to be about aliens and space, and this was mostly war and combat. It‘s still an entertaining read, and I highly recommend Scalzi to anyone.⭐️⭐️⭐️

Here are my favorites of 2017! Five stars are rare for me, but these three deserve all the stars. The Lottery and Other Stories are chilling yet simple stories, How to Stay Alive has an inspirational and insightful message, and Jesus: The Way, The Truth, The Life is an amazingly educational chronology of Jesus‘s life (free to read at bit.ly/2jLhd1a). Can‘t recommend them highly enough!

My first batch of #littleblackclassics

It was snowing butterflies by Charles Darwin (#67): Interesting at some parts, but boring and confusing at others. ⭐️⭐️

On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts by Thomas de Quincey (#4): Very funny satirical essay on murder, makes good points relevant even in today‘s society. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Antigone by Sophocles (#55): Super impressed by this play. Very captivating and engaging. A delightful story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shirley Jackson is the Rod Serling of literature. That is the highest complement I could pay to anything, and this certainly deserves it. My, what disturbing wonder this book is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can now proudly declare that I have read Pride and Prejudice! I most certainly liked it. Not a favorite, but definitely better than expected. Some parts were slow, and others hooked. I can certainly see myself reading more Austen, but farther in the future. Just not my usual style. Glad to now be able to join the conversation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Also, I like the 2005 movie, but the 1995 miniseries is just too cute! & I have a soft spot for #lostinausten 💖

I‘ve fallen in love with this series. Nothing cozy about this mystery. As real and gritty as you can get, yet not horror, making it enjoyable and engaging. A touch too long and slow-moving for my taste, yet so very well done. I love these characters so much, they feel so real, with flaws and all. I CANNOT WAIT for the next installment of this series (which is my favorite) and the next episode in the BBC adaptation (also my favorite). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reasons to Stay Alive moved me profoundly. It made me think, take my time, and savor every line. Matt Haig's writing's so eloquent, beautiful, and meaningful. It's about depression, but it‘s written for every human being. It serves a purpose beyond its pages. I finished with the urge to read it all over again. One of the rare books that moves me so. I can't shake off the feeling that I'm now a bit better as a person.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After 2 months (!), I finally finished Lord of the Flies. 🎉 It was long overdue, so I'm so glad I buckled down and finished it.
Honestly, it wasn't anything to write home about. The premise is interesting, and Golding did it in a very meaningful and distinct way. However, my biggest gripe about it is that this book is so slow (and a few other qualms). Overall, I respect it and I'm glad I'm done with it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

For now, I'm storing all the books I've read and own (on the middle shelf there). #bookshelf #shelfie #bookcollection

Any tips on how to decorate the bookshelf? The brown doesn't really go with my room, but I'm curious to hear any other alternatives to painting it.

EvieBee It looks lovely! Especially those theocratic books in the corner. I like the brown, very classic. I like to add pops of color with stuffed animals that are small but literary. I have my eye on a Pusheen plush that's dressed as Sherlock Holmes! (edited) 7y

As much as i love everything from the outside of the book (the title, the cover design, the synopsis), the inside was lackluster. Ended up being more of a historical fiction with no likeable characters, no humor, the writing a bit muddled, and not enough food. Mr. P is quite underwhelmed. ⭐️⭐️
