Sycamore Row
Sycamore Row: A Novel | John Grisham
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERDont miss an original essay by John Grisham in the back of the book. John Grisham takes you back to where it all began. One of the most popular novels of our time, A Time to Kill established John Grisham as the master of the legal thriller. Now we return to Ford County as Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial that exposes a tortured history of racial tension. Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford Countys most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Readers Circle for author chats and more. I actually finished this Tuesday night late 😊

Grisham takes us back to where it all began, with Sycamore Row. A Time To Kill introduced us to Ford County Mississippi, Jake Brigance, Carla Brigance, Lucien Willbanks, Harry Rex and Sheriff Ozzie. Three years later, Jake is still waiting on the insurance to pay for the loss of his house, when he is dragged into another major case. ⬇️

Seth Hubbard goes to church one Sunday morning, talks to everyone, makes a call to one employee to meet him at 2 by the creek, and hangs himself. Monday morning, Jake Brigance receives a letter in the mail from Seth Hubbard. Enclosed is a holographic will. Jake has just been hired for a case that will reveal a lot of secrets. One that is 60 years old.

I love John Grisham as a writer. He is my favorite legal thriller writer. He always has great character development. Sycamore Row hooked me when I read the summary at the library. It never let me go from page one. I would suggest you read Time To Kill before this one, if you haven't, because Sycamore Row brings a lot of information from the other book into it. That why you will have a concept of all the characters.

😊 Happy Reading 😊

While I found the plot interesting, I must admit that it's not really my cup of tea... I'm glad I read a procedural fiction, but it's definitely not my favorite genre.

Eh. This could have been about 100 pages shorter, with the loose ends tied up. I loved A Time to Kill, but this fell short for me.

I've read the precursor to this book, A Time to Kill, but don't remember much about it - it was a long time ago. What I do know is that this is a brilliantly.
Wow! Grisham is back with another excellently written stunner. A smart, fast moving story about the legality of a Holographic Will.

marleed I‘m slowly reading the JG catalog. It‘s been fun. I‘ve not read them in order which makes it interesting to read the changes in his writing style. 2y

Where A Time to Kill (pub 1989 set in 1985) wrote of the brutal rape and aftermath of a 9 yo black girl by two white brothers in Ford County, book 2 (pub 2013 set in 1988) still addressed race but by way of greed and white entitlement. It used the N-word twice where it was ubiquitous in the first making this read much easier for me. Although this one is less intense, I like spending time with Jake and company. Book 3 is my next Grisham!

Day3 #marvellousmarchreadathon @Andrew65

Third in a 3-part series with attorney Jake Brigance in Ford Co, MS. A suicidal man leaves a handwritten will for Jake, which snubs all his family members and gives $50mil + to his caregiver of 3 yrs. Thus begins an explosive conflict between lawyers, relatives, the press, culminating in exciting courtroom drama.

So happy to return to Ford County with Jake Brigance and the characters from A Time to Kill. Jake works in the courtroom to protect an old white man‘s will of giving the majority of his estate to his maid. In typical Grisham fashion, this story packs a punch and is quite emotional. 💚 #MountTBR

I really enjoyed this book. John Grisham spins a tale full of twists and unexpected turns. I laughed and cried. I loved Jake Brigance in 'A Time to Kill' and it was nice to catch up with his character still helping the underdog after all these years later.

Just finished: but it was a pleasure to read to the end. The story is not that complicated, a little too much of legal stuff, but the characters are all so well depicted that you feel like you know them all by reaching half of the book. Worth it reading, definitively! #2020

A holographic will (like the one above) is what is in contention at Ford county. How's the battle going to end? Halfway through this Grisham and the ride has been nice so far.

I really enjoyed this novel. I‘m not much into courtroom novels but I felt pulled along at a nice pace with it. I‘m no law expert but I feel like it offered a fairly accurate representation of what it would be like to bring a case like this (a particularly dramatic will contest) to court. It is the sequel to another Grisham novel which I haven‘t read but while it does reference the other novel from time to time it stands alone just fine.

Really enjoyed revisiting Jake and Carla back in Ford County. Interesting to see how things turned out since the Hailey trial. I was pretty well engaged throughout but I'll have to admit "A Time to Kill" was better. Nevertheless, this was still a page turner for me.

@wanderinglynn I finished my first audiobook for the #BookFitnessChallenge.
I was listening to it while cleaning my house which I guess counts as being active. This is a sequel to Time to Kill. It was something good to listen to in the background while doing chores and stuff and not having to think too much, not nearly as deep or Good As Time to Kill.

This book is definitely not a book with the impact of A Time To Kill but it was a good and enjoyable read, if longer than it needed to be taking almost 14 hours of reading time. That said though nice to see John Grisham get back to some quality fiction after in my opinion a few weaker returns in recent years. My favourites by him were written pre 2000. Am pleased to have read it.

After racing through its predecessor at a fever pitch, I was so excited to pick up this one. It's another wonderful courtroom tale, though it focuses on civil litigation as opposed to criminal. Can't wait to read more Grisham!
