From Cradle to Stage
From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars | Virginia Hanlon Grohl
19 posts | 16 read | 29 to read
While the Grohl family had always been musicalthe family sang together on long car trips, harmonizing to Motown and David BowieVirginia never expected her son to become a musician, let alone a rock star. But when she saw him perform in front of thousands of screaming fans for the first time, she knew that rock stardom was meant to be for her son. And as Virginia watched her sons star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Were they as surprised as she was about their childrens fame? Did they worry about their childrens livelihood and wellbeing in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers? Did they encourage their childrens passions despite the odds against success, or attempt to dissuade them from their grandiose dreams? Do they remind their kids to pack a warm coat when they go on tour? Virginia decided to seek out other rock star mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey in which she interviewed such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dres mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REMs mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouses mother; Patsy Noah, Adam Levines mother; Donna Haim, mother of the Haim sisters; Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys mother. With exclusive family photographs and a foreword by Dave Grohl, From Cradle to Stage will appeal to mothers and rock fans everywhere.

This book, written and narrated by Dave Grohl‘s mother, is an interesting take on mothers of musicians and their famous children. Grohl points out that one thing all of the mothers she interviewed said about their kids was how energetic they were as children. Because she was an educator, Grohl also touches on how our schools fail creative children. She and her son also have a fun discussion after the acknowledgments in the audiobook. #audiowalk

Suet624 I keep meaning to find this book. 2y

Dang I just love the Foo Fighters…the traffic after not so much.💕🎸🤘🏻

vivastory I saw them on their very first tour. They're going to be here next week. I'm not going, but I was happy to see them touring with a band from KC. Looks like a blast! 3y
peaKnit @vivastory the first tour, be still my heart! We‘ve seen the last 4, one twice…but how did we wait so long?! That said, I have a head ache and raspy voice today #goalsat50 !!! 😂 it was so good. This was this renamed venues first concert so it was a cluster to get in (and out) so we missed Radkey…I‘ll have to check them out. 3y

This was such a great one and I would have never found it if not for #booked2021. I was on the search for #musicalinstrumentonthecover and stumbled across this gem. I‘m seeing the Foo Fighters in concert in a few weeks, so this was perfect. She not only tells her stories but also interviews other rockstar moms. A very interesting perspective!

Cinfhen This sounds like a really awesome audio 🤘🎸❣️#stacked And SO COOL you get to see a concert soon!!!! Ive missed live music events so much due to Covid 3y
alisiakae This sounds good! And it would also work for the mustache prompt, which I still have lingering! 3y

Two Kindle #dailydeal alerts for US Littens doing #booked2019! The top book works for #featuresamusician! The bottom book could be possible for #femaledetective, although it‘s a bit of a stretch according to reviews and the blurb. It‘s up to you!

Cinfhen Tagged book sounds fun😎 6y

I found this book very thought provoking to read. I loved the stories of the rock stars from their mother point of view. I've loved Dave Grohl for years and this just reinforces what a great person he seems to be. I liked all her stories about him growing up and the interviews with Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobains' mothers to be fascinating.

Super excited these came in at the library! I love books about musicians. #libraryhaul

Libby1 The Drawing of the Three is amazing. I loved it. 7y
mabell The tagged book sounds really interesting! My husband loves music and the background on people - I wonder if he would like it or is it targeted more for mothers/parents? 7y
BookBelle84 @mabell I don't feel like it is targeted to parents. It's more interesting stories of them growing up, how they became famous and what their mothers think. I'm really enjoying it! 7y
mabell Thanks @BookBelle84 sounds fun! 7y

A friend lent this to me after getting it from the library - she knows about my music obsession (and Dave Grohl may feature in there somewhere!). This is written by his mum, and not having read the front cover properly, I thought it would be all about Dave. It wasn't, but it was still really interesting to see what all these mums did to help their children succeed in music. There's a real mix of musicians too.

Here is what I texted my husband (who is a huge metal fan):
Listening to a book written by Dave Grohl's mother, Virginia. It's about rock star moms. At a part where Tom Morello's mom made him take her to see Body Count and wanted to be in front row because she made friends with Ice-T. I'm dying..

Review from Goodreads and I'm too lazy to retype.

LauraJ Tom Morello and his mom are amazing 🌞 7y
