The Choices We Make | Karma Brown
29 posts | 21 read | 25 to read
Following her critically acclaimed debut novel Come Away with Me, Karma Brown returns with an unforgettable story that explores the intricate dynamics between friends and mothers Hannah and Kate became friends in the fifth grade, when Hannah hit a boy for looking up Kate's skirt with a mirror. While they've been close as sisters ever since, Hannah can't help but feel envious of the little family Kate and her husband, David, have created--complete with two perfect little girls. She and Ben have been trying for years to have a baby, so when they receive the news that she will likely never get pregnant, Hannah's heartbreak is overwhelming. But just as they begin to tentatively explore the other options, it's Kate's turn to do the rescuing. Not only does she offer to be Hannah's surrogate, but Kate is willing to use her own eggs to do so. Full of renewed hope, excitement and gratitude, these two families embark on an incredible journey toward parenthood...until a devastating tragedy puts everything these women have worked toward at risk of falling apart. Poignant and refreshingly honest, The Choices We Make is a powerful tale of two mothers, one incredible friendship and the risks we take to make our dreams come true.

Perhaps it was because my dad died so suddenly and so young that I felt more protective of life, less willing to take risks. Or perhaps I was always that way; stepping out of the familiar and comfortable wasn‘t easy for me.

I hit somewhat of a reading slump in April so only ended up reading 7books. I had 2 five star reads (choices we make and I liked my life) and the rest were just 3-3.5 stars. #aprilreads

Kristy_K Love the graphic! 7y
SauerPatch Thanks to your original post about it, I decided to choose I Liked My Life as a choice for our next book club read. It looks like it's going to be the groups choice too. :) Thanks! 7y
Bostonmomx2 @sauerpatch that's so cool. I hope you all love it. If you think about, please come back and let me know 😊 7y

Starting this today

DebinHawaii I really want to read this one and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think. I loved Come Away With Me.📚👍 7y
Bostonmomx2 @DebinHawaii I'm about 50 or so pages in already and I think it's going to be emotional. Something happens right away that pulls you in and keeps you going. The subject matter is even one that I can't really even relate to on a personal level but even so I think it's going to be good. 7y
DebinHawaii @Bostonmomx2 Yes, I can relate as I ugly-cried through Come Away With Me so I imagine this one is going to draw that same kind of emotion too. 😢😪😭💙 7y

A beautiful story about love, loss, heartbreak, hope, and family. This one made me tear up more times than I like to admit, truly a beautiful story.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I've been wanting to read this... 7y
morgan_krahn @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I highly recommend it. Just keep a box of Kleenex close by. It is definitely a tear jerker 7y

Ok I can't be the only one, these deckled edges are driving me nuts! Please stop interfering with me freely flipping through my book! 😡

OrangeMooseReads I can't stand deckled edges. I've passed on buying books because they had deckled edges. 7y
clconn17 I hate deckled edges also! I am reading a book with them right now and it's driving me nuts. 7y
Rachbb3 Agree! 7y

Robothugs Don't hate me. I don't mind them so much. 🙈🙈 7y
morgan_krahn @Robothugs oh my goodness I don't hate you! I could never ever hate a fellow book loving litten! 7y
Robothugs ✊🏻 United we stand! They just don't bother me 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I can see how they would bother other people! 7y
Cityofamber I'm not a fan either 🙅 7y
TheWordJar I like the way they look, but they are the worst for flipping through a book if you are trying to find something. Ugh. 7y
ReadingOver50 I don't like them either 7y
Bostonmomx2 I just started this and I agree, they're kind of annoying. 7y

"Multilayered and completely consuming". This is the second book of hers I read, and I am loving her style of writing. She draws you in with the story lines, and throws in a twist you don't expect. Sooooooo good!!!!

A woman's offer to be a surrogate for her close friends changes everyone's lives in ways they never could have imagined in this wonderful book that's expertly narrated. I felt for all the characters as I smiled and cried my way through this book.

LitHousewife I've got to pick this one up. It sounds good. One of Emma's friend's mom was a surrogate and I wondered what that must have been like for the whole family. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I've got this one on my list already. Nice to know it worked well for you! 8y
