Another tough book to rate. This one definitely suffered from not being what the blurb promised. The blurb says this is about a girl going on a road trip to Alaska with her brother, but the trip to Alaska doesn't start until page 247! The rest of the book is about 17-year-old Donna who spends a lot of her life whining, and lives in a small town populated entirely by terrible people - this was definitely a "The 1950s ACTUALLY sucked" book, which⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) got a little old after a while. But my main problem with this book was that it felt rather pointless. I was never sure, in the end, what lesson or point I was supposed to get from this story. I guess... follow your dreams?? Maybe?? It wasn't a bad story, it just never really held my interest because I found Donna incredibly boring and unrelatable, and the “all small towns are full of prejudiced rednecks“ mantra rather insulting. ⬇ 5y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) However, it was still fun to read because it's always fun to be the last person in the #LMPBC group, getting to see everyone else's thoughts! This book also took me to Alaska (eventually!) for #ReadtheUSA2020 and checked off the Road Trip box for #SummerFun and the Someone Else Picks box for #SummerFunJr!

Kimberlone Huh, I‘m from AK and have never heard of this book! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Kimberlone - well, in fairness there wasn't much time actually spent in Alaska during the book haha 5y

Making progress on books for #JoysofJune and thanks to an awesome reading day Sunday, I have a bit of a buffer for my 300pg/day goal and am still about 150pgs ahead of schedule.

Hoping to finish the tagged book soon. It hasn't been a bad read, but I haven't really connected with the MC so it feels like I've been reading it forever!

@Andrew65

@SaturnDoo @Clwojick - because you love bujo pages!! 😁

AllisonM89 My bullet journal gives off the impression that I'm a terribly disorganized madwoman 🤣 5y
TheAromaofBooks @AllisonM89 - I have my regular everyday one and then one I use just for reading/Litsy stuff... the Litsy one stays a lot prettier than the everyday one, which is incredibly chaotic and full of checklists with nothing checked off 😂 5y
Clwojick Ooooo. 😍 I love that skinny washi. 5y

SaturnDoo 😍 I ❤ it!!! I need some solid color washi. I have a lot of prints but not many solids. I have been working on my bujos the last few days but no pictures yet, but there will be. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @SaturnDoo - I got a bunch of solid-colored washi from Ali Express! 😂 I couldn't resist all the colors!! 5y
Andrew65 You are doing great, and I love your recording system 👏👏👏🙌 5y
SaturnDoo @TheAromaofBooks I have been on that website and have a cart load of stuff...but @Clwojick gave me a good tip. Put the stuff in the cart, let it sit for a while, then go back and make sure you still want it. I'm afraid, I won't be able to resist it either 🙄🤣 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - Thank you!!! I think I finally have a setup I like, after who knows how many readathons!! 😂 5y
TheAromaofBooks @SaturnDoo - Wait a minute, a way to check impulse buying??! That sounds like crazy talk! 😝 5y
Clwojick I think they have a summer sale going on right now! So maybe don‘t wait too long this time 😂😂😂 5y

Later MayJune would say that the biggest turns in life come when you‘re paying the least attention, making small choices you don‘t know yet will change everything.

It was ok. Slow start but got better in second half. Some underdeveloped storylines but not too distracting. Young girl in 1950s stuck with the adult responsibility of caring for her brother, maintaining a home and trying to finish school. When her brother becomes ill they take off on a trip of a lifetime to see his one square inch of Alaska he won in a contest. A book about following your dreams no matter how big and scary they may be.🐺🐺🐺

17 year old Donna has been saving up to leave her small town behind but when her younger brother gets sick she sets off with him in pursuit of his dream rather than her own. This book is about everything that brings her to that decision- the people she meets, the truths she learns, and all the ways she has had to grow up. Set in the 1950‘s this was a sweet book that I enjoyed reading but didn‘t find especially powerful. Still a pick. #24in48

Soubhiville It sounds sweet. 6y

An author from my country for #angiebookishnovember. I read this because it fit the #roadtrip category of my #2016readingchallenge but I did not love it.
