Pickpick

For me, reading a Marquez novel is one of the most consistent experiences from start to finish, and this is no exception. I never get really excited at different parts- the end is no more thrilling than the middle. But there's also no weak sections- if you tune out you risk missing some of his signature comic-poetry. And in this one, you get to learn some interesting history of the origins of modern South America through Bolivar's reminiscing.

Reading and water are quite #goodtogether , especially on a beautiful day like today visiting Kingston, Ontario . Really enjoyed our visit- full of great restaurants, coffee, parks by the bay, and at least three bookshops all in close proximity (book haul from one of which to be posted later). 🌅📖🇨🇦 @Kalalalatja @Cinfhen

readordierachel That looks like a fantastic reading spot! 6y

Mehso-so

I‘ve been reading through Márquez this year and this novel on the last year of Simon Bolívar‘s life was a tough one for me. I didn‘t mind it, but never really understood it and was never really excited. ?

Graywacke Had some issues. First, it brings in a lot of historical detail about South America, about which I know next to nothing, and it quietly addresses 1989 South America, where again I‘m clueless. But, second, I kind of got lost in the details. Check out Wikipedia, a lot of purposes and meanings. 6y
BarbaraBB I knew a lot about South America‘s history when I read it but still it was a tough read. Those sentences that lasted eight pages... in the end I thought it worth the effort though. 6y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB sounds like you have Autumn of the Patriarch in mind. That is quite an experience. 6y
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Yes, you‘re right. I am mistaken. And I appreciate that one more than this one. You too? 6y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB yes. A lot more. Autumn of the Patriarch is quite something. 6y

I couldn‘t remember if I read this one in my late teens tear through as many of Marquez‘s books as I could get my hands on. It doesn‘t matter, it‘s all beautiful. Someday I‘ll read one of his in its original, untranslated 🤞🏽

What is on your July TBR List?

aquanin I plan to read some English classics on July. But basically I read books I've bought. 7y

rareads OMG they are so pretty. 😍 I have tried multiple times but could never finish the Count of Monte Cristo. :p 7y
aquanin Years ago I read MC firstly in simplified version. I loved it. Then I bought the thick copy one, I forgot how many pages. Then my friend borrowed it and didn't return it. So a few days ago I bought the wordsworth edition, the black one, and has around 900pages I think. The print is veeery small too haha. I hope I can finish it someday. I watched the movie but didn't really like it 7y
rareads Ah yes same for me. I had quite loved the abridged version but my love and enthusiasm kinda vanished when I started reading the unabridged book. X'D I hope you don't spoil your eyes while reading it :p 7y
