A rainbow of some of my #selfimprovement projects over the years. #riotgrams

StephanieGeiser Zero Waste Home is on my list of books to read! How was your experience with it? 7y
thebluestocking @StephanieGeiser Honestly, I haven‘t gotten far with the book. But I love the information she has online. There are so many blogs and YouTube channels about the whole movement. I‘m taking steps in the direction of less waste. 😉 7y
StephanieGeiser @thebluestocking Me too! I made a lot of changes in the fall (worm composting, rags instead of paper towels, cloth napkins, etc.) and since those have now become second nature I think it is time to take it to the next level. 7y

thebluestocking @StephanieGeiser Ooh. I‘d love to know more about your rags instead of paper towels thing. That‘s a step I‘ve been nervous to make. So far, I‘ve been focusing on reusable shopping bags and less plastic in the kitchen. 7y
StephanieGeiser @thebluestocking I haven‘t been able to get rid of paper towels entirely. I still need them to do things like soak up bacon grease. However, I‘ve been able to completely replace paper towels in my normal household cleaning. Some people buy rags but I‘m trying to do this on the cheap so I cut up old clothes (rescuing them from the landfill) and keep clean ones in an easily accessible bin in the kitchen with a small hamper nearby. 7y
thebluestocking @StephanieGeiser That‘s amazing. Thank you for sharing. 7y
StephanieGeiser @thebluestocking Any time! I‘m always happy to share tips! 7y

"Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use."?❤️

?Who knew if her father didn't have the idea "too bad she wasn't a boy", we may have had Emily Price-Architect in the world rather than Emily Post- Etiquette Expert?

A complete chance I've had two encounters with etiquette this week. Unless the universe is telling me something? Love this podcast!

Jess_Read_This I'm completely fascinated how she went from the correct ways to manage a household complete with maids/footmen 👉🏻how to hitchhike, how to deal with a loved one coming back from the war, hosting a party where you are chef/server/clean up crew. She made it a point to try to keep up with changes in society/culture. (edited) 7y

For reasons unknown, I recently bought an old copy of Emily Post's Etiquette ("The Blue Book of Social Usage"). Published in 1944, it's war-time supplement includes things like 'hospitality without waste' and 'furlough wedding invitations'. It's 900 pages long and has the above note about paper usage. How cool is that??

Laura317 That's so cool! 8y
Zelma Very cool! I actually love old etiquette and social manners books. 8y

Laura317 Also the bone-crusher. I dislike those as well! 8y
TheLazyReader @Laura317 hahaha That is on the next page. 8y
Weaponxgirl I'm left handed so hate handshakes in general, I always end up looking like I'm doing the robot just before I engage in one as my head doesn't want to shake with my right hand 8y

TheLazyReader @Weaponxgirl I am left handed as well and I always try hard to have a strong handshake. I think it is important, it shows how self confident you are. It gets awkward when a weak handshaker doesn't even try, like they have lost their soul in the process. 8y
Weaponxgirl @TheLazyReader that's exactly how I feel though! I've worked in care for years and shaking hands isn't really a fixture of the job so I'm sure my handshake is abysmal. I shall work on it next time I have to do one 8y
TheLazyReader @Weaponxgirl Phoebe Gloeckner wrote "Do it firmly and look directly into other men's eyes thinking to yourself I'm better than you, you son-of-a-bitch" maybe that helps. 8y
