A Fraction Of The Whole
A Fraction Of The Whole | Steve Toltz
Meet the Deans 'The fact is, the whole of Australia despises my father more than any other man, just as they adore my uncle more than any other man. I might as well set the story straight about both of them.' Heroes or Criminals? Crackpots or Visionaries? Relatives or Enemies? It's a simple family story... Visit the website here 'Riotously funny. . . deserves a place next to A Confederancy of Dunces.' - Wall Street Journal 'A rich father-and-son story packed with incident, humour and characters reminiscent in styles of Charles Dickens and John Irving. . . A Fraction of the Whole soars like a rocket.' - LA Times 'A grand achievement and the debut of a great comic talent. But it also has a heart. . . go away and read it.' - Sunday Times 'Toltz brings all the energy and assurance of a young Peter Carey to this burlesque, bravura performance.' - Irish Times 'A gloriously absorbing, preposterous and funny excursion to the brink of madness and the meaning of life.' - Sunday Telegraph SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2008 MAN BOOKER PRIZE

“All of that will be gone by morning. Instead, they will dissect this last evening for years to come. What had they missed that they should have seen? What small gesture, forgotten, might have changed everything? They will pick it down to the bones, wondering how this had all gone so wrong, and they will never be sure.”

"But the real difficulty is, I feel dwarfed by our lives. They loom disproportionately large. We painted on a broader canvas than we deserved.."

Journey, not the story. This one here will take you too long, or you are not really reading it. It won't give you an answer in the end, just as it has not given Jasper any.. it's all about the head-banging process of figuring out.. or maybe the realisation that there's no figuring out.

I tweet @Annkingman about a book rec from a Books on the Nightstand podcast episode she and @mkindness did 10 years ago - I couldn't understand the title and can't find it anywhere. (The #podcast has been off the air for a few years but it is still my fave and I have all of the back episodes in my cloud.) She kindly responds and remembers(!) the name - A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz. I dig through my tbr shelves and...😂 #botns

My_novel_obsession That is one of favorite books!! 6y
bookandcat @Anovelobsession I haven't read it yet but now I must! What did you enjoy about it? 6y
AlaMich I miss that podcast! 6y

#unpopularopinion @Libby1
Everyone in my book club loved this one except me 🤷‍♀️.

Libby1 Ha! I hadn‘t heard of this! I was in the same position with my book club with Wild. I DETESTED it. 7y
TheRiehlDeal @Libby1 Couldn't agree with you more. I watched the movie first and could not get over the fact of how similar both were. Definitely one of those instances where the movie was better than the book. 7y
Libby1 @TheRiehlDeal - From the moment she started out with a bag that was too heavy and shoes that didn‘t fit I had it in for her. 😂 Prepare! 7y

Jeg Cloud Street. 🙃🙃 7y
MrsMalaprop @Jeg That‘s funny because @CarolynM was saying the same on one of her recent posts about Winton #kindredunpopularopinions 😂 7y
CarolynM @Jeg Snap! I don't get the love for that one at all 7y
Jeg @CarolynM yippee thank you thank you. At long last someone who doesn‘t like that book. 7y
TheWildCard In Cold Blood, and anything written by Hilary Mantel. 7y
MrsMalaprop @TheWildCard I struggled with Wolf Hall, but kinda appreciated it. In Cold Blood is on my bedside #TBR 😬. 7y
EadieB An American Marriage. I hated the characters and thought they were stupid! 6y
EadieB @ThewildCard I hated Hillary Mantel too. I collected all her books. Read Wolf Hall and gave them all away. I had problems wondering who she was talking about. It was not very clear. She would write ‘he said‘ but it was a guess who ‘he‘ was. (edited) 6y
MrsMalaprop @EadieB 😂 I did not get the hype around An American Marriage either. Seems we may have some #booklove or should I say #bookhate in common 🤣. 6y
EadieB @MrsMalaprop whew! Glad to hear that! I thought I was the problem! 6y

This, I've read twice. Still loved it. A great story for the sake of a story.

This dark comic tale covers the generational craziness and quirks of a father, son, and an uncle as they attempt the criminal and familial fates. Their histories, tellings, journals, and voices are funny, tragic, and layered--and the 500 pages will take you somewhere well worth the long trip to Australia and a fresh inside out view of our bizarre modern society.

I struggled through this book. The characters were boring. It was trying too hard to tell and not show. Preaching to the choir.

Loved this book. Very long but well worth the time.

shawnmooney 714 pages? Just imagine how long "the whole" would've been! :-) Sounds really interesting though… I love doorstopper novels. 8y
Zkazemi It's a wonderful book of course 8y

My favorite book of all time is about a very dysfunctional family...#readathon #24in48

Liberty Great choice! 8y
Flaneurette I loved this one too! Have you read his newest? 8y
My_novel_obsession @Somni68 I haven't read his newest yet. I have it on my shelf but am saving it for vacation (I'm also a little scared that it won't live up to my fan girl obsession of his first book) 8y
