TransAtlantic: A Novel | Colum McCann
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LONGLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWSIn the National Book Awardwinning Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann thrilled readers with a marvelous high-wire act of fiction that The New York Times Book Review called an emotional tour de force. Now McCann demonstrates once again why he is one of the most acclaimed and essential authors of his generation with a soaring novel that spans continents, leaps centuries, and unites a cast of deftly rendered characters, both real and imagined. Newfoundland, 1919. Two aviatorsJack Alcock and Arthur Brownset course for Ireland as they attempt the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, placing their trust in a modified bomber to heal the wounds of the Great War. Dublin, 1845 and 46. On an international lecture tour in support of his subversive autobiography, Frederick Douglass finds the Irish people sympathetic to the abolitionist causedespite the fact that, as famine ravages the countryside, the poor suffer from hardships that are astonishing even to an American slave. New York, 1998. Leaving behind a young wife and newborn child, Senator George Mitchell departs for Belfast, where it has fallen to him, the son of an Irish-American father and a Lebanese mother, to shepherd Northern Irelands notoriously bitter and volatile peace talks to an uncertain conclusion. These three iconic crossings are connected by a series of remarkable women whose personal stories are caught up in the swells of history. Beginning with Irish housemaid Lily Duggan, who crosses paths with Frederick Douglass, the novel follows her daughter and granddaughter, Emily and Lottie, and culminates in the present-day story of Hannah Carson, in whom all the hopes and failures of previous generations live on. From the loughs of Ireland to the flatlands of Missouri and the windswept coast of Newfoundland, their journeys mirror the progress and shape of history. They each learn that even the most unassuming moments of grace have a way of rippling through time, space, and memory. The most mature work yet from an incomparable storyteller, TransAtlantic is a profound meditation on identity and history in a wide world that grows somehow smaller and more wondrous with each passing year.Look for special features inside. I really liked this one. It was not an easy read but it was so well constructed. The main thread is the history of one fictional family but it also contains real people and real events that I had to go off and learn more about. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This wasn't what I'd hoped for. The Irish ambassador put this as a pick to gain insight to the culture and the country. It started really strong with the story of the first Trans-Atlantic flight. I thought I was in for something really interesting. Instead the attempt to weave in other stories and bring them together made for a disjointed read with an ending that felt barely connected to anything else that came before. I was really disappointed.

This novel crossed multiple historical periods all the way to the present. The non-sequential jumps in timeframe made this book hard for me to read.

Prairiegirl_reading Can you explain how this worked? 7y
MrBook @Prairiegirl_reading Sure 😊! For December, my bookclubs each read a book--the same book--as always. Then after the regular discussion concludes, we have a grab bag. Everyone brings a book they've read & enjoyed that the group hasn't had as a selection. They wrap it like a Christmas present. All the books go in a big bag. Then everyone draws a random numbered slip of paper. 1 goes first, then 2, and so on, in reaching in and pulling.... 7y
MrBook Out a book. When everyone's gotten a book, we all unwrap at the same time. At that point, you can trade for another book if someone wants to--you've read the book, you already have it, etc. Then between our December and January meetings, everyone reads the book they won, and they come to our January meeting to talk about it! Others can talk about it too and ask questions. Everyone's TBRs tend to skyrocket, lol. 7y
Prairiegirl_reading @MrBook thanks! I think I will suggest this to my irl book club. We need to shake it up after 15 years! 😄 7y

We all have the urge to jump off ledges, to sail into the great unknown, and to only "develop our flight patterns on the way down." Although the pace of TransAtlantic, at times, felt like a long trip in the air, McCann's book shows us that Taking the Leap is a timeless act. Our boldest decisions are sustained and spurred on by the echoes of past risk-takers, their dreams tied to our own, propelling us over life's thrilling, unpredictable waters.

I couldn't wait to read this one after all raving reviews.
I guess my expectations were too high. I liked the book, the theme and the writing, but that's about it, I am sorry to say. #booker #manbooker

It's about people who make history and history which ruins people's lives and people who have strength to go on and make this world spin. No matter what. Breathtaking.

Prettily written. I liked reading this a lot more than I thought I would. I absolutely loved the interconnected-ness of these stories of real people by fictional women. Looking forward to discussing this with my book group peeps.

Alena Loved this book. In fact, I've loved everything I've read by McCann. 9y
KikiLovesBooks It's my second. I really liked this better than Let the Great World Spin. Not sure exactly why, although both are memorable. It's been a few years and I still think about Spin. 9y

TransAtlantic traces the lives of four generations of women living between two continents amidst significant historical events. I was fascinated by how personality traits, ideas, behaviors, and experiences are passed from one generation to the other. Perfectly captured by Colum McCann.
