The King's General
The King's General | Daphne Du Maurier
13 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
"Daphne du Maurier is a magician, a virtuoso. She can conjure up tragedy, tension, suspense, the ridiculous, the vain, the romantic." --Good Housekeeping Honor Harris is only eighteen when she first meets Richard Grenvile, proud, reckless - and utterly captivating. But following a riding accident, Honor must reconcile herself to a life alone. As the English Civil war is waged across the country, Richard rises through the ranks of the army, marries and makes enemies, and Honor remains true to him. Decades later, an undaunted Sir Richard, now a general serving King Charles I, finds her. Finally they can share their passion in the ruins of her family's great estate on the storm-tossed Cornish coast-one last time before being torn apart, never to embrace again.

Read for #BookedInTime I don‘t read much historical fiction set in 17th Century England/during the English Civil War so I doubt this book would have crossed my path otherwise, but I‘m glad it did. Du Maurier sets her story in Cornwall where Honor Harris a young & impetuous woman falls in love with a Royalist military leader only to be pulled apart time & again, first by an accident & then by war. Longer than it needed to be but still a good read.

Cuilin I‘ve read a few du Maurier and I‘ve enjoyed them all so adding this to my TBR now. Thanks for participating. 1y

squirrelbrain I think it‘s Foy, a bit like Claire Foy or maybe even like the French leaf - feuille. 1y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain it is Foy! It's lucky I have Cornish relatives because I know I'd have been reading it wrong in my head (probably fow-ey!) 😂 1y
Librarybelle Nice! I‘ve not read this one by her 1y

This may be my favorite du Maurier, even though I really liked Frenchman's Creek. You would think a crippled woman couldn't change the history of a nation, wouldn't you? But, you would be wrong. Set during the Civil War between Parliament and Charles 1, Honor Harris helps the man she loves. Even against his sister. I was really hoping there would be a sword fight between the two women and I wanted to see how du Maurier would make that happen.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds great! Stacking! 3y
Butterfinger @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think you will like it. I love historical fiction when the characters were true figures. The ending. My goodness. I may have to make my husband read it just so I can talk about it with someone. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Butterfinger Sounds really good. I finally read Rebecca this year (late to the boat, I know), but her writing was so beautiful. 3y

This really is HF—17th century English Civil War. Not my favorite duMaurier by far. Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel have, as a whole, more engaging storylines. The writing is beautiful, but the novel seemed long and dragged for me in the middle.

I enjoyed this mainly because Du Maurier‘s writing is so lovely. I would have liked it more if it hadn‘t been so long.

Received this beauty in the mail today. I placed a book depository order in the moment I saw this on a booktuber from the UK's video where she discussed this. Rebecca is all I have read by Daphne Du Maurier and I for sure want to fix that.

Re-reading one of my old favorites for book club (Guess who got to pick this time?!). Forgot how much I love the writing and the strong Heroine. Having a great time!
