Pickpick

This battered paperback copy came to me from a friend, along with a ton of other paperback mysteries from his grandmother. I‘ve so enjoyed each one I‘ve picked up so far.

Tey is a delight. The dialogue throughout is witty, the characters are well-developed, and the observations of human nature are fascinating. The “mystery” picks up very late in the book, which meant I‘d formed my own ideas of how it would play out… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …and still there were key twists I didn‘t see coming. Aside from several side comments of casual racism (“of the time”—sigh), this was satisfying through and through. This is my #1946 pick for #192025. AND it garnered me a last-minute #BookSpinBingo! @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 8mo

BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Leftcoastzen I love them, too! I had been wanting to read Heyer and Tey and Sayers and I love reading them in these well-loved copies. There‘s a whole stack in the other room—just not room in the picture for them all! (edited) 8mo
jlhammar Really looking forward to this one. Great pic - love those old paperbacks! 8mo
willaful Oooo, got some real goodies there. Though none as good as this one, IMO. 8mo

squirrelbrain I think it‘s Foy, a bit like Claire Foy or maybe even like the French leaf - feuille. 9mo
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain it is Foy! It's lucky I have Cornish relatives because I know I'd have been reading it wrong in my head (probably fow-ey!) 😂 9mo
Librarybelle Nice! I‘ve not read this one by her 9mo

Mehso-so

I don‘t think I ever rated a #Persephone a so-so before, but this one just brought a bit too little.

It‘s a sweet enough story (a spinster falls overboard a cruise ship, strands on a desert island, is saved four years later and returns to England in the midst of WWII) but it just fell a bit flat.

squirrelbrain That‘s a shame! It‘s not often that a Persephone falls a bit flat. 11mo

Pickpick

#192019 read for #1946 and #1001books read 171 or 172 (my app and spreadsheet disagree!). This book is called a fantasy, but I wouldn't call it that at all. The setting is a centuries-old earldom/castle/city sometime in the past, and life in the castle is run by ancient tenets and rules. Very original, and I will be on to book 2 soon!
