Nappanee Public Library Expand Your Horizons Task: Read a book from a new-to-you genre

Traditional Japanese Manga (read back to front, right to left, in translation) is very new to me so I sought out Deaf culture specifically to keep me engaged. Volume one is a complete cliffhanger so I may need to keep going to feel the story lines through...

MaggieCarr Shoya is a bully. When Shoko, a girl who can't hear, enters his elementary school class, she becomes his favorite target, and Shoya and his friends goad each other to devise new tortures for her. But the children's cruelty goes too far (stealing and damaging 8 hearing aids!). Shoko is forced to leave the school, and Shoya ends up shouldering all the blame. Six years later, the two meet again... 3y

This volume is 98% flash back. And I definitely like the context that it's giving to the reader. Such a good start and I totally like the introduction of characters and how they're being affected by Shoko's deafness. #manga

Story of Shoya a bully and Shoko, a girl who can‘t hear who ends up his victim until she leaves the school. 6 years later, Shoya wants to make up for being a jerk but is it too late?

Read as part of the #readingrush book to movie challenge. Movie was great and covers all 7 volumes thank goodness cause volume 1 is lots of bullying. If you like anime definitely recommend the movie available streaming on Netflix.

I loved this manga series and looking forward to watch the movie. I am not deaf myself, so I can‘t judge the representation m, but I loved the way it handled bullying among young adults and children.

I read my first Manga! Silent Voice sheds light on bullying, Japanese culture, hearing impairment, and a developing romance....Onto Vol. 2!

I binge read the whole series last night for #comicthon and I have zero regrets. This manga touches on bullying, disability, acceptance, friendship, growing up, and more, in an organic and believable way. It‘s well done and I can definitely recommend it.

Counting down the hours (4 to go) until I‘m home and can treat myself to some goodies and some binging for #comicthon - I may be late to the party but I will definitely join in when I can. 😄

xicanti Ooh, A SILENT VOICE is fabulous! 7y
2BR02B Nice selection of snacks! The chickpea chips look tasty, and I like ABC's vegan cookies. 7y
Eyelit @xicanti good to know! It was referenced in an article I read about the shape of water last month 7y
Eyelit @2BR02B the chickpea chips are basically crack. I can eat an entire bag in one sitting! I love ABC cookies too, I‘ve never tried the Mac the chip one - but it called to me. 😃 7y
alisiakae I love those chickpea chips! And butterbeer...yum! 7y

This has been such a huge hit in my classroom. I have never had #manga in my #classroomlibrary before this year. This is has not been on the shelf since I introduced it and students are taking it upon themselves to make mini book groups around it. One of my students watched the anime film for it as he waited for me to add to the collection. Love when books spark such interest in my classroom. #TeachersofLitsy

So he's not exactly reading, but I used to make my sweet Murchie pose with every book *I* read and I couldn't resist pulling out one of his old photos for today's #fallintobooks prompt. I miss him so much, and I miss this tradition we had together. #someoneelsereading #murchieplusbooks

MidnightBookGirl My cat Riley was the animal I most often made pose with books. My Emmy dog would do it in on occasion, but always looked weary of the books, lol. I love when old pics of them with books pops up in my Time Hop, but it's bittersweet too. My current furbabies, Pages the dog and Alabama the cat, are not huge fans of taking pics with my books, but I'll keep trying! 7y
xicanti @MidnightBookGirl it took Murchie ages and ages to get used to posing. Even after we'd been at it for a couple years, I had to take seven or eight shots per book because he kept moving his head. Pages and Alabama will get there! 7y

I enjoyed the first volume of this #manga. Focusing on a boy bullying a new classmate with a disability, the story will illicit a variety of emotions in readers. Reading it makes me wonder if it is an accurate portrayal of how bullying is dealt with in Japanese schools. Whether or not it is, it allows young readers to better understand the difficulties of having a hearing impairment, and hopefully teaches them to be more empathetic to others.

alanacristin This sounds interesting! I've worked in some great, inclusive classrooms in Japan but also know of some specific bullying situations at other schools. I'm curious to check this out! 7y

Volume 1 was absolutely phenomenal. It's very intense. You can't help but feel angry for what's happening to Shoko. Not only is this an exploration of bullying in Japan, it's also an examination of what it's like to be deaf in a culture where the stigma of such a thing is heart-breakingly negative. 5/5 and a toss into my favourites bin.

Just devoured the first volume of A Silent Voice. I think I just found a new manga. It's touching and a little emotional in a way that reminds me of Sand Chronicles. And that ending? I need more of this very soon!
