The Phone Book
The Phone Book: The Curious History of the Book That Everyone Uses But No One Reads | Ammon Shea
6 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
Read Ammon Shea's blogs and other content on the Penguin Community. A surprising, lively, and rich history of that ubiquitous doorstop that most of us take for granted. Ammon Shea is not your typical thirtysomething book enthusiast. After reading the Oxford English Dictionary from cover to cover (and living to write about it in Reading the OED), what classic, familiar, but little-read book would he turn to next? Yes, the phone book. With his signature combination of humor, curiosity, and passion for combing the dustbins of history, Shea offers readers a guided tour into the surprising, strange, and often hilarious history of the humble phone book. From the first printed version in 1878 (it had fifty listings and no numbers) to the phone book's role in presidential elections, Supreme Court rulings, Senate filibusters, abstract art, subversive poetry, circus sideshows, criminal investigations, mental-health diagnoses, and much more, this surprising volume reveals a rich and colorful story that has never been told-until now.

You know how some of us will read anything? I just saw a kid in the waiting room reading a phone book. 😂 Sorry I couldn‘t get a picture, but it was priceless!

thebluestocking For a kid these days, the phone book is probably a fun novelty. 😂💙 6y
Amandajoy @thebluestocking I never thought about that but you‘re probably right. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 4! This highly acclaimed biography of the phone book will make your jaw drop with as much as you'll learn, according to some reviewers. Shea offers a witty, humorous, engaging account of the book from its inception in 1878 (having 50 listings & no numbers). He'll show its role in presidential elections, Senate filibusters, SCOTUS rulings, abstract art, subversive poetry, mental-health, crimes, etc. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

tpixie My dad worked for 30 years for Southwest Bell from the late 50s into the late 80s he would've enjoyed this ! 8y
RealBooks4ever Anybody remember when there were words at the beginning of the phone numbers? I still remember my grandparents' number: Emerson 8-6163. 😄 8y
AlaMich My wife the first grade teacher shows her kids the phone book every year, and they are all amazed that there is a book with their family's name and address. Many of them have never seen one before. 8y

I got all excited when I heard a sound that was unmistakably a book being thrown down outside my house. I am expecting book mail and I got so excited. I walk outside and it's the mother truckin' white pages? Or phone book? I don't even know, that's how much I care. The dog sticker accurately portrays my face at that moment. #saddays

Gayan 😂😂😂 Book Mail disappointment. 8y

Josie @Christinak @Gayan @LeahBergen @ReadingSusan I felt a little personally victimized by the man that delivered above phone book. I know it wasn't his fault, but I still wanted to call him a jerk lol 8y
Gayan Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by the phone book man or Regina George. #meangirlsrule 8y
