Everybody's Son: A Novel | Thrity Umrigar
35 posts | 26 read | 44 to read
The bestselling, critically acclaimed author of The Space Between Us and The World We Found deftly explores issues of race, class, privilege, and power and asks us to consider uncomfortable moral questions in this probing, ambitious, emotionally wrenching novel of two familiesone black, one white. During a terrible heat wave in 1991the worst in a decadeten-year-old Anton has been locked in an apartment in the projects, alone, for seven days, without air conditioning or a fan. With no electricity, the refrigerator and lights do not work. Hot, hungry, and desperate, Anton shatters a window and climbs out. Cutting his leg on the broken glass, he is covered in blood when the police find him. Juanita, his mother, is discovered in a crack house less than three blocks away, nearly unconscious and half-naked. When she comes to, she repeatedly asks for her baby boy. She never meant to leave Antonshe went out for a quick hit and was headed right back, until her drug dealer raped her and kept her high. Though the bond between mother and son is extremely strong, Anton is placed with child services while Juanita goes to jail. The Harvard-educated son of a US senator, Judge David Coleman is a scion of northeastern white privilege. Desperate to have a child in the house again after the tragic death of his teenage son, David uses his power and connections to keep his new foster son, Anton, with him and his wife, Deloresactions that will have devastating consequences in the years to come. Following in his adopted familys footsteps, Anton, too, rises within the establishment. But when he discovers the truth about his life, his birth mother, and his adopted parents, this man of the law must come to terms with the moral complexities of crimes committed by the people he loves most.

I did a large Venetian puzzle while I finished my first Thrity Umrigar. I‘ve gotta say, I thought she‘d deliver something much better than this book, which was entirely EXPECTED at every turn. Only one minor surprise in the whole thing, without the emotional resonance that might‘ve made up for its predictability. Even though people seem to agree this is her worst book, I won‘t rush to read her again. #audiopuzzling

Normally I really enjoy Thrity Umrigar‘s books. She usually creates strong, multidimensional characters, but I did not find that to be the case in this book. The story fell flat for me and I didn‘t connect with her characters in a way that I normally do. This one was a bit of a disappointment.

Completely overrated.
To be more charitable, the novel had a very interesting theme but failed to explore the theme or the characters deeply. It ended too quickly, as well. I wanted to love this novel but couldn‘t.

Umrigar explores class, race, power, privilege, and morals in this emotional heart-wrenching story that will stay with the reader long after it is finished.

This was just okay. The train wreck was foretold from the beginning of the story, so I was tempted to bail but only hung in to see exactly how the wreck manifested. It wasn‘t as dramatic as one might guess. Heavy-handed writing with the themes, which are interesting enough in themselves so no need to dwell.

Mamashep Disappointing. I generally love Umrigar. 6y
Tamra @Mamashep I know what you mean - I had just finished listening to The Secrets Between us and really enjoyed it. It just felt like with this novel that she was worried the reader wouldn‘t “get” the issues unless she pounded at them. The ending too is lack luster for all that she makes out of the issues at hand. 6y

I‘m not sure about this - almost 4 hours in and the oncoming train wreck is so obvious it seems like little is left to anticipate. 😳 The narrator isn‘t helping the experience either.

Anton, a 9 year old African American boy, is left in an apartment during a heatwave with no electricity, by his drug addicted mother. He breaks a window to escape and is eventually taken into foster care by a wealthy, white couple who recently lost their son. Themes of white privilege, racism, deceit and abuse of power. Moving story of love and loss and ultimately, understanding.

Tamra I really enjoy her writing! 6y
DivineDiana @Tamra I am interested in her other books. 6y
Tamra @DivineDiana I haven‘t posted yet, but yesterday I finished listening to The Secrets Between Us and it‘s definitely a pick. I didn‘t realize it was a sequel, but it stood by itself very well. (edited) 6y
DivineDiana @Tamrabaumann Thank you. I added the first book to my TBR! 6y

I bailed but I‘m not going to say it was s bad book. I have transracially adopted children. I know birthmoms and adoptive parents. I did even feel comfortable reading abt this man stealing this kid. His doing it legally was somehow more heinous.

I'm going with a Pick on this read, but for a little while towards the end it started to feel a bit like a TV drama and I thought I might be very disappointed. Instead, what I feel is that for this little kid, everything is going to be ok. Who will write the stories of the not so "fortunate"?

Wow!! This book! I hope I do this book justice!! Is blood thicker than water? This book asks and answers that question. Anton is torn between doing right by his adoptive family and he is grateful for all they have done for him, but, the question is has he been what he wanted to be or what he feels his adoptive family wants him to be!! Great read!! Very relevant to the times!! Read this book! 5⭐️

What an awesome book. I wanted to put it down a couple of time because it was challenging to read - in a good way. Privilege, racism, and politics all play a role in this story. The characters are so believable and so was the situation they found themselves in. If you haven't read any of Thrity Umrigar's books, you need to. She's an amazing storyteller!
