Anyone else ever had a TBR on their shelf for over 45 years? This book has come with me from home to home since I won it as a prize in my local library (see inscription) and I‘d never read it until now. I wish I‘d read it sooner rather than just kept it as a memento of happier, childhood days. To me, Knights and Grails always invoked Monty Python, but these stories of kings, courage, fair maidens, enchanted castles and heroic battles was glorious

IndoorDame That‘s so cool! 3mo
Soubhiville I think holding on to a book that long before reading it is the mark of a true bibliophile! I can‘t say I‘ve had any on my TBR that long, impressive! Glad you enjoyed finally reading it. 3mo

The_Book_Ninja @Soubhiville It was a prized (literally) possession…it never occurred to me to actually read it😂 3mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I still have several of that vintage, though I'm mindfully working through them 😊 That is a great prize, by the way - I'd have loved to win that book as a kid. KA and his Knights is my jam! 👴 Glad you've finally got around to reading it ♥️ 3mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble I used to practically live in the library when I was in primary school: It was only 2 minutes walk away…the prize was based on how many books you took out. 3mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Cool! ? We had the "Puffin Club" when I was in Juniors, where you could order discounted books from the publisher via the school, which I saved up my pocket money for. I remember the teacher, Mr Webster, handing them out, getting to mine and announcing "Michael's library!" ? Our twinning is going further back ?‍♂️? 3mo
Ruthiella I have had unread books in my shelf acquired in the‘90s but 1978 has me beat! I‘m glad you hung onto it. 😃 3mo
The_Book_Ninja @Ruthiella Me too, it was a pleasure to read. 3mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble I bet you didn‘t even need the incentive of a discount to buy books, right? 📚🦉 3mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Not as an incentive, but the financial relief was necessary (not wanting to get too "We had gravel for breakfast" about it! ?) 3mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble you had breakfasts? 😉 3mo

#ChildrensClassicRead2022 #October

I‘m a little late in posting, but as I continue with our November read, I found a couple King Arthur related books on my bookshelf! King Arthur for Boys I found at a used bookstore in town, and the Book of Merlyn is a book I read as a child/tween. It was to be part of The Once and Future King, but was not in the final printing. ( I also read TOAFK as a child, but cannot find my copy.)

TheBookHippie Oh how fun!!! I admit I looked up others as well as took many movies out of the library !! @UwannaPublishme did movies as well I believe!! I just love it! 2y
tpixie @TheBookHippie I need to watch some movies! 2y
MemoirsForMe Yes! It‘s been a King Arthur movie month for me. I‘ve watched 3 so far: with Clive Owen and Kiera Knightly (so-so), with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner 🙌🏻 and Excalibur with Helen Mirreen, Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart—my favorite! Let me know if you have more to recommend! 😁❤️🎬 2y

After seeing so many films about King Arthur, I‘m glad to finally read this engaging classic. I still imagine dashing Robert Goulet as Lancelot.🥰Loved the tale of Sir Gawain & Lady Ragnelle. And what an evil sister Arthur had to endure! Now I need to see both Helen Mirren & Helena Bonham Carter portray Morgana. What fun! And yes, I do open all my #LitsyLove mail with my Excalibur letter opener!

PurpleyPumpkin I didn't get to read this one last month! Hopefully, I'll be able to join in for November. Glad you enjoyed this! Love the letter opener. 😊 2y
MemoirsForMe @PurpleyPumpkin I‘m sure you‘ll enjoy it. And be prepared to binge-watch the many films about it. 😁 I‘ve already watched 2 I‘ve never seen. Happy Reading, my friend!❤️ 2y
tpixie Robert Goulet! I haven‘t thought of him in ages! Coolest letter opener ever! 2y

I wish I read this as a kid, because I'm sure I would have enjoyed every second of it. The Arthurian myths are always a source of delight & curiosity. One of the very few TV shows of which I've seen every episode is BBC's Merlin, lol. There's a bit of a hodgepodge sense somewhere around the middle where it feels like disconnected stories, but it starts & ends strongly & I loved the mysterious epilogue.

#ChildrensClassicRead2022 @TheBookHippie

TrishB Same, was obsessed with Arthur tales 😁 my daughter‘s middle name is Avalon. She rolls her eyes when she has to tell people. 2y
TheBookHippie I thought the same thing!!!! I just loved it! 2y

batsy @TheBookHippie Very glad I got to read it because of this challenge 🙂 2y
TheBookHippie @batsy ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ 2y
TrishB That‘s the one people always think she‘s named after 😁 2y
CarolynM @TrishB Middle name as a source of embarrassment - that‘s what they‘re for, isn‘t it?🤣 2y
TrishB @CarolynM exactly! They can always hide them 😁 2y
nathandrake1997 I remember reading this as a kid and enjoying it quite a bit! It is one of the first books I read 😄❤️ 2y
batsy @nathandrake1997 Something about these tales, the wonder and enchantment 🙂 2y
Centique Yay for Merlin! I was a Merlin fan too. May have been mainly for the good looking knights… 😂 But I do enjoy the mythology too. There was a documentary where the two lead actors visited possible Arthurian sites around the UK which was quite fun too. 2y
Centique I read the TOAFK so I‘d be interested to see if this has some of the same tales 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB She has a cool middle name!I hope she comes to love it 😊 2y
Bookwomble @batsy When I was 5, I played Sir Kay in an infant school production, which I presume was based on Disney's Sword in the Stone. I've been obsessed with the Arthurian legend ever since, and have a soft spot for Kay, despite his evolution from the noble Cai of Welsh legend to the orgulous Kay of the middle ages. 2y
TrishB @Bookwomble I‘m hoping so! She embraces it a bit more as she gets older. My son is just lucky he‘s not Merlin. I decided that was a bit much for a scouse playground experience! 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB So many "beat me up" names you could have gone with from the Round Table ? 2y
batsy @Bookwomble That would have been fun! 😆 I'm partial to Sir Kay, as well. I kept thinking, is he just misunderstood? Lol. And I'm pretty shocked that I've not seen the Disney version! 2y
batsy @Centique The two lead actors had great chemistry! It's part of what made the show so memorable. The love story was deffo between Merlin and Arthur 🙂 I really want to read TOAFK! I have it waiting on my shelves. 2y
Centique @batsy yup! I even read some fan fiction about Merlin Arthur “merthur” ship. 😂😂 My truly geeky heart 🤪 2y
batsy @Centique Now why didn't I think of that! 😂 One of my earliest experiences of the internet was looking up X-Files fanfic... Those Mulder/Skinner ones were the best 😆 2y
tpixie @TrishB Avalon! Pretty! 2y
tpixie @nathandrake1997 cool memories 2y
tpixie @Centique I loved TOAFK! But it was ages ago- too king for comparison 2y

I‘m excited to re-read this childhood favorite of mine. As a child, I read The Once and Future King & The book of Merlyn, among others. The author‘s note in the front was very interesting and reveals how carefully he researched this book before writing his version of it.

I am ready for tomorrow's discussion of the first ten chapters of The Nature of Witches for #sundaybuddyread .

The #192025 Challenge is a good reason to join in on some of the #childrensclassicread2022 and 2023 books. King Arthur has been sitting on my shelf for a couple years now, so I have no good reason to put it off any longer.

@TheBookHippie Do you have a schedule/ discussion or do we just enjoy reading in solidarity? 😁

TheBookHippie We enjoy it in solidarity! Some post interesting finds and tie ins or movies and then a review at the end. It‘s a very zen challenge. It‘s been a lot of fun! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheBookHippie That works for me! I'll dip in and out based on the book availability. 2y
batsy I'm looking forward to King Arthur, too! I just started. 2y

TheBookHippie Just checking in hoping you are alright!! 💜 💜 💜 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheBookHippie Hey, I'm good. I had to go to San Antonio last week for work. Our hotel there is struggling so the week of the 10th was full of prep work & once in town, my days were packed and I hardly had any downtime to breathe. I did carve out about a little time between visits to get to two local book stores. I'm hoping to read week 3 today and then be available for final discussions. Fri-Mon AM Roger was in hospital as a precaution but is OK. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ♥️♥️♥️♥️ sending light and calm your way!! Glad Roger is ok. It‘s all stress… hope you can get some zen pieces of time here and there! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheBookHippie Thanks! 💜 And I just remembered that I turned off app notifications when he was in the hospital so I could leave my ringer on should I need to be called overnight. 🤦‍♀️Oops. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I‘ve done that too! I just wanted to make sure you were alright. We miss ya and you‘re input to our discussions! 2y

Playing catch up with my #bookspindoublespin picks….

This was February‘s #bookspin pick and I really thought I‘d like it more than I did.

While this pick was just ok it did get me more intrigued to pick up The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! My favorite Arthurian books (although they are rather YA than adult in writing tone) is the series by Gerald Morris that starts with the tagged book - they are snarky and fun and still cover many of the traditional legends. Super fun!! 2y
BacklistReader @TheAromaofBooks oh that sounds good I‘ll have to check it out. 2y

Rating: 5/5 stars.

As I have always said, "There is a certain je ne sais quoi," when it comes to King Arthur and I really, really love reading about it. Plus, reading it reminds me of my dad, who was a huge fan of King Arthur.

As you may be able to tell from the spine and cover, I've read this a few times...
#feistyfeb day 3: most reread.

ScorpioBookDreams That cover brings back memories! I used to have the same edition when I was younger. 8y
rabbitprincess @ScorpioBookDreams I will actually buy old Puffin Classics at book sales simply because the edition gives me so much nostalgia. This one was a present from a friend when I was 11. 8y
ScorpioBookDreams It's amazing how a certain book cover can make you feel. I'd forgotten all about that book until your photo. I can remember reading it because my dad loved tales of King Arthur. 8y
rabbitprincess @ScorpioBookDreams I took a King Arthur course in university and when we read Malory, I had the weirdest feeling of déjà vu despite never having read Malory before. Took me a while to realize that it was because of Green all those years ago. 8y
