Purple Prose: Bisexuality in Britain | Kate Harrad
12 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Purple Prose: Bisexuality in Britain is the first of its kind: a book written for and by bisexuals in the UK. This accessible collection of interviews, essays, poems and commentary explores topics such as definitions of bisexuality, intersections of bisexuality with other identities, stereotypes and biphobia, being bisexual at work, teenage bisexuality and bisexuality through the years, the media's approach to bisexual celebrities, and fictional bisexual characters. Filled with raw, honest, first-person accounts as well as comments from leading bisexual activists in the UK, this is the book you'll buy for your friend who's just come out to you as bi-curious, or for your parents who think your bisexuality is weird or a phase, or for yourself, because you know you're bi but you don't know where to go or what to do about it.

(Please excuse the graffiti on this park bench 😬)

Happy to have started this #newyearwhodis pick from @Moll ‘s list during #PrideMonth! There are a lot of parallels between bisexual and asexual erasure and discrimination; it seems there is a pattern of being seen as “too straight” for the LGBTQIA+ community. I‘ll be continuing with this one today!

Moll Ooo yay! Looking forward to your thoughts😊 2y

Aug-Dec!😁 #12booksof2021 @Andrew65

Purple Prose I got from my first ever visit to Gay's The Word; Crazy Rich Asians was a really fun summer read; Pumpkinheads was my first ever graphic novel (and it has a bi character in it!!); The Lonely City was one of the most well written books I've ever read; Mansfield Park = my current fave Jane Austen; and for December I chose the Christmas short stories I read to commemorate the #WinterGames2021! 😁

Andrew65 Some popular choices. 3y
Moll @Andrew65 and for good reason!😁🙌 3y
Andrew65 @Moll True! 3y
tokorowilliamwallace Yay, someone else knows about The Lonely City! Such superb observation and thought and characterization so far. Have you read anything by the author tagged. Her style of articulation and observation reminds me of the American Studies and study in the various subjects from this book. 3y
Moll @tokorowilliamwallace They do indeed - I loved it!! Definitely going to read more by Laing I think😁 Which author are you referring to sorry (Laing, Harrad or Trachtenberg)? 3y

@TheSpineView #Two4Tuesday

Thanks for tagging me @Nute 🥰

1. There are TOO many to name that I still want to visit in London but one I visited recently that was on my list for a while was Gay's The Word - the oldest LGBT bookshop in the UK!
2 Hmmm most of the time I have an idea of what books I'm looking for yeah...but I often come out with 5 more that weren't on my list (especially if @Emilymdxn is involved😂)

TheSpineView Thanks for playing and happy Tuesday! ❤📚❤ 3y
Nute The Word, that‘s a cool name for a bookstore. I totally agree… there are so many bookstores to want to visit. 3y
Moll @TheSpineView Happy Tuesday!!❤ 3y
Moll @Nute It's called Gay's The Word (which I also think is a cool name!) - would recommend!! And yeah so many! Not a bad problem to have though hey?😊 3y
Nute Yes, a very cool name indeed! 3y

Recommended books after this one!

5 🌟 and first completed book for #thereadingrush.

😍 that I can use a book on my sexuality for the book with a purple cover on for a prompt.

It's also helped me clarify my labels - I'm pretty certain I'm a: disabled polyamorous cis bisexual!

The polyamorous thing is new, but I'm often crushing on multiple people at the same time.

It's difficult for me to know, though, as I've never had a partner!

Emilymdxn BI PRIDE FOREVER 💖💜💙 5y

I went to an event this evening with the editor and one of the contributors for Purple Prose - it really got me thinking about sexuality and the challenges of being openly bisexual. It was a really interesting talk and I came away with these two lovely books - I read Valenti's "Why Have Kids?" recently and I've wanted this ever since ??
