The Republic of Imagination
The Republic of Imagination: America in Three Books | Azar Nafisi
12 posts | 13 read | 25 to read
A New York Times bestseller The author of the beloved #1 New York Times bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran returns with the next chapter of her life in booksa passionate and deeply moving hymn to America Ten years ago, Azar Nafisi electrified readers with her multimillion-copy bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran, which told the story of how, against the backdrop of morality squads and executions, she taught The Great Gatsby and other classics of English and American literature to her eager students in Iran. In this electrifying follow-up, she argues that fiction is just as threatenedand just as invaluablein America today. Blending memoir and polemic with close readings of her favorite novels, she describes the unexpected journey that led her to become an American citizen after first dreaming of America as a young girl in Tehran and coming to know the country through its fiction. She urges us to rediscover the America of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and challenges us to be truer to the words and spirit of the Founding Fathers, who understood that their democratic experiment would never thrive or survive unless they could foster a democratic imagination. Nafisi invites committed readers everywhere to join her as citizens of what she calls the Republic of Imagination, a country with no borders and few restrictions, where the only passport to entry is a free mind and a willingness to dream. From the Trade Paperback edition.

So I figured something out about audiobooks, or perhaps, this audiobook. I need to annotate!!! There is so much I want to "own," and with an audiobook, I can't. I haven't encountered that with earlier audiobooks, but I still haven't cracked a dozen yet.???

Started listening to this on the way to campus after teaching American government at a satellite campus. I wanted to turn around and let the students listen right along with me!

I am a Citizen Reader!

LeahBergen I see TWO sections of Persephones ... and a Persephone totebag!! And I love the Everyman's Library editions at the bottom. I think you may be a kindred book spirit (but I don't own any Drop Caps ... yet!). 😉 8y
Aurora0044 So pretty! 8y
BooksForYears @Sydsavvy Thank you! At one time they were arranged by genre, but that went out the window long ago. 8y
BooksForYears @tpixie The grey ones are all from a small, British publisher called Persephone Books. I'm just a bit obsessed ☺️ 8y
BooksForYears @LeahBergen Kindred book spirits! Be careful with the Drop Caps, because once you get 1 or 2 you'll want them all! 8y

I enjoyed parts of this book. The first and third sections drew me in more because of how she tied the book and themes she talks about to people and events in her own life. The middle section felt inch more academic and dry in comparison. But overall, I thought it was interesting and informative.

Loving this book already and I'm only in the introduction. It's like she's reading my mind about how the humanities is just as important as the sciences.
