Angels: A Novel | Marian Keyes
16 posts | 30 read | 8 to read
After catching her husband having an affair and being fired from her job, Maggie Walsh suddenly finds her perfectly organized existence has become a perfect mess. She decides, for the first time in her life, to do something daring -- and flees to her best friend, Emily, in the faraway wonderland of Los Angeles. In this mecca of tanned, beautiful bodies, unsvelte, uncool Maggie is decidedly a fish out of water. Yet, overnight, she's mixing with film folk, pitching scripts, even experimenting with sex -- and discovering that the end of a marriage is not the end of the world.

Pickpick

I actually read this over 20 years ago. Maggie Walsh-Garv finds out her husband has cheated on her and decides to leave Dublin to go stay with her friend in Los Angeles. Being the “safe” sister of the Walsh family it was fun to see her let her down as she tries to move on. I loved getting to reconnect with The Walsh clan. I forgot how funny they were. Might go pick up other Keyes when I need a pick me up. Pick!

LeahBergen I think that‘s about when I read it, too! 1mo
Reggie @LeahBergen I think I‘ve read about 4 Keyes books, 2 of them having to do with the Walsh daughters. This one and the Rachel one. I like her books. 1mo
Librarybelle I love Marian Keyes! I was just thinking this morning, as I gazed at my shelf of her books, that I really need to read one of her books soon. 1mo
Reggie @Librarybelle she gave me something cute and made me laugh at a time I needed to laugh. I appreciate her. 1mo
Lindy I was sceptical when a member of my feminist book club suggested that we read Marian Keyes, but I enjoyed 1mo

Angels: A Novel | Marian Keyes
Mehso-so

I come back to this every few years and its always a reasonably pleasant read. It's a good mix of slightly raunchy and poignant that makes it a good book for light reading. One issue I do have with it though, is that the whole book could have not happened if the characters had had one particular conversation right at the beginning. I've always found that type of narrative irritating but if that doesn't bother you overmuch, I'd say give it a go.

“Once again, my hero. And here I‘m supposed to be the one saving him.”

What did you think of the book this month?

Favorite Angel YouTube video.

ElizaMarie Didn't get to this one either :( I know I am not a really good “book club participant“ 3y
AsYouWish @ElizaMarie That is okay… I took a dark turn in free Kindle books and dark romances took over my life this month…. I regret nothing, 🤷🏻‍♀️😂🤣💙 3y

“Did you ever think we would be anything other than unbelievable?”
― Jessica Shirvington, Embrace

What is something that is unbelievable, but true?

Favorite Angel Book.

#ParanormalLoveCrew #PLC

ElizaMarie Hmm. Just that we live in this pandemic world. Some days I wake up and I‘m so so confused that this is real! 3y
AsYouWish @ElizaMarie Right?!?! I have talked about this before, I was obsessed with the show The Tribe and wanted to live in that world. Fast forward - we are (sort of), it isn‘t as fun as I thought it would be at 15!!! Plus I thought I would have met my leading man by now… still waiting….. 3y
ElizaMarie @AsYouWish awe he will come when you least expect it 3y

AsYouWish @ElizaMarie I mean, I keep getting DMs on the good old TikTok, but so far no connections have been made. But who knows maybe one will click and I will have one of those epic TikTok romances that everyone else on there seems to be having, lol!! 3y
ElizaMarie @AsYouWish awwe! That would be super intersting! 3y
AsYouWish @ElizaMarie It sure would be, it would be even better if it was my TikTok crush, but I doubt that will ever happen….soooooo…. 3y

“Chicks dig historians.”

Who is your favorite Pop Culture Angel?

Favorite Angel Meme?

Favorite Historical Event.

#ParanormalLoveCrew #PLC

AkashaVampie Angels in the outfield with Christopher Lloyd is probably one of my favorites. For meme, check out My Guardian Angel. There are some good ones. Historical events are hard. Most of them if not all of them are something bad... thats why they are historical. 3y
Bookworm54 1) Not sure about pop culture angels. I used to find the film Dogma funny (thought it has been a while), quite liked Castiel from supernatural, and I loved the tv series Hex which had some fallen angels/nephalim, Lucifer… maybe I like fallen angels 🤔 2) agree with @AkashaVampie about guardian Angel memes 3) I love anything about ancient Egypt, and would love to learn more about mayans and aztecs! 3y
AkashaVampie @Bookworm54 I'm a super supernatural fan and I didn't even think of Cas. 3y

ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Ooo I have never seen Angels in the Outfield. Been curious about it! 3y
ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 Ooo the Mayans are super exciting! I was able to visit a couple of the pyramids in Mexico. It was just amazing they were able to do all these things!

Oooo I didn't think about the show Lucifer - I saw a couple of seasons and loved it!

Oo great choice!
3y
ElizaMarie So, thought about this a lot (and stolen ideas from others)... I love the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. They are a great mix of creepy and eerie. 💥 I don't have a favorite historical event (as @AkashaVampie mentioned most historical events are pretty scary) ... But I have been learning more about witches and the story of that. Also just powerful women (who were deemed witches) 3y
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie u have never seen Angels in the outfield? Wow. They have a couple different movies for it. I didn't even think of Weeping Angels. For some reason all I could think of is Angel from Buffy but he's just a vampire with the name Angel. Haha 3y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie - I am not a huge comedy or feel-good movie type of person. I say that but then I watch stuff like that, so it's a bit difficult. I mean... I like Disney cartoons but mostly watch horror-type of movies. 3y
AsYouWish @AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 I am slightly disappointed that no one said Angel from Buffy/Angel as their favorite Angel…. I have failed in my corruption of this group, 🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤣😂🤣 3y

“In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees.”

Which book did you choose to read this month?

What is your favorite opening line to a book?

#ParanormalLoveCrew #PLC

Bookworm54 I‘m planning to read Embrace :) I often don‘t think of opening lines. The ones that come to mind are “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” from pride and prejudice, and “Life as I knew it ended at half past eleven on a Tuesday morning” from Nightshade 3y
ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 Ooo !!! So I updated this on the #PLC website first! Ha, I couldn't think of a first-line either, but then when I googled it the Pride and Prejudice one stood out and I forgot how much I loved that line! 3y

I haven't taken a bath in ages, but when I used to, I would pretty much read anything. However, nothing beats a humorously well told story. Marian Keyes is a master of that. Here's one of hers that I own. #bathtimebooks #autumnreads

Wat een ontzettende misser om A few good men een B-film te noemen!!
