Deadly Gamble: A Girl and Her Dog Cozy Mystery | Connie Shelton
11 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
Praise for USA Today bestselling author, Connie Shelton, and her first novel: "An impressive debut mystery!" -- Albuquerque Journal "Charlie is slick, appealing and nobody's fool--just what readers want in an amateur sleuth." -- Booklist "This is a dandy. Don't miss it!" -- Book Talk In this debut mystery series novel, Charlie Parker, accountant and partner in an Albuquerque private investigation firm, is visited by her old school friend, Stacy North. Stacy's Rolex watch is missing and she begs Charlie to help locate it before her husband finds out. Things are complicated by the fact that Stacy had been seeing another man, Gary Detweiller, and he's the one she suspects of having stolen the watch. With a little detective work, Charlie and her sidekick dog, Rusty, retrieve the missing watch and all should be well. But three days later, Detweiller is murdered. All eyes turn to Stacy as the prime suspect. Once again, Stacy begs Charlie's help in proving her innocence. As she begins to ask questions, Charlie learns that Detweiller's life was not as simple as first perceived and that any number of people had grievances against him. And before she can pinpoint the killer, her own life is in danger as well. Includes new foreword from the author upon the 20th anniversary of first publication of this ongoing series' first title. Praise for the other books in the Charlie Parker mystery series: "A well written, by the book who-done-it that will enthrall purists. Charlie is a fabulous amateur sleuth." -- Midwest Book Review "Shelton has created a lively hero in Charlie and puts her into situations that require prompt action and good common sense. A Charlie Parker mystery is always a good read..." --Southwest Book Views "Charlie is a good detective and a pleasant companion to unravel a mystery with." -- Mystery News "Shelton's engaging story, likable heroine, and comfortable prose make this a good choice." -- Library Journal "Connie Shelton gets better with every book she writes." --The Midwest Book Review Search words: mystery, first in series, free ebook, freebie, female sleuth, Southwestern mysteries, crime fiction, cozy mystery, pet sleuths, animal mysteries

Rec‘d the last book & my book back for #cbbc #coffeebeanbookclub today, w/ these amazing, generous, & thoughtful gifts!! Thank you so much @Callemarie !! 🥰💜🥰

I 💗 the set of coffee cups!! 😍😍 And the fall & Halloween kitchen goodies will be well used in my kitchen ☺️☺️ I can‘t wait to try the coffee (smells so good) & you know I 💗those chocolates 😘😘 The notebook, too - unnecessary, but loved!! Thank you! 💜💜 (& for the sweet note 🥰😘💜)

Callemarie Aww yay! Im glad it got to you safely! And you're so welcome! I felt so bad about the journal-- max can be a little butt and secretly gets ahold of things without me even knowing. 🤦‍♀️ 4y
Avanders @Callemarie lol absolutely no worries - it gives it character! 😂☺️💜 4y

Yall. I think its safe to say 2020 has been a rough year. For obvious reasons but for also thr fact that its been my worst year of reading since probably college. But I was able to finish this little cozy and i must say cozies have been the real MVP this year. Mainly because they have really helped me to slowly get over my reading slump. So thank you once again to another cozy mystery that beat the odds!

Tera66 I love a good Cozy, especially after a reading slump. Covid has been a rough reading time for me too. 4y
Avanders I feel the same way! ☕️📖🥇 4y

To be honest I didn‘t have high expectations for this one but I was pleasantly surprised! It moved at a good pace and kept me guessing until the end!!

Ruthiella I love it when my expectations are tempered and the book ends up surpassing them! 😀 4y

Mehso-so

Although I loved the notes in the book from @Avanders there were parts of this book that felt disjointed to me. Charlie was nice to crappy people in such a friendly way I found it disconcerting. Maybe the New Yorker in me? 1 paper turned in today and 1 book read. Tomorrow is my big paper writing day. @SamHeartCoffee this will be in the mail by Saturday at the latest.

Avanders Lol yeah... some places are full of people that are nice to crappy people. 😳😜 congrats on 1 paper down! And good luck tomorrow!! 🍀♥️ 4y
SamHeartCoffee Yay!!! Package received and will be posting shortly! 😘 4y

The author comes off as a touch classist but the story was engrossing. I didn‘t figure out the killer until about half way through. Trying to binge cozies and witch books this month for Halloween! Now if life would cooperate that would be excellent!

Avanders Maybe it was “more okay” in the mid-90s to be a touch classist? 😬😜 4y

Avanders @bullbunny me too :( but she had a waitlist signup ... did you sign up? @4thhouseontheleft @LibrarianRyan nope — I ordered from Cara Kozik directly on Etsy! 🤩🤩 Ryan — if I end up w an extra Night Bus (it‘s possible), I‘ll let you know! I got to order the Forbidden Forest one! 🥳🥳🥳 @HOTPock3tt 😘😘 5y
alisiakae @avanders @librarianryan Do you know there is a B/S/T Owlcrate FB page? I see the mugs on there occasionally, although I also see people who try to sell them at ridiculously high prices, there are reasonable sale prices sometimes listed, too. The Night Bus seems to be listed by someone right now for $12. 5y
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft Yeah, I know about the page, but I don't use FB anymore. I like the mugs but I don't need them. I use them for soup ladles. 5y
bullbunny No way there was!!? Darn it!!! 5y
dariazeoli That mug is adorable! ❤️ 5y
Gissy Love that mug!❤️❤️❤️ 5y
Andrew65 Love the mug! 5y

Relaxing with a cozy mystery. This just made me laugh out loud. "These look awful, but I'll eat them anyway." Who hasn't been that bored and peckish?
