Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America
Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America | Amy Ettinger
A journalist channels her ice-cream obsession, scouring the United States for the best artisanal brands and delving into the surprising history of ice cream and frozen treats in America. For Amy Ettinger, ice cream is not just a delicious snack but a circumstance and a time of year--frozen forever in memory. As the youngest child and only girl, ice cream embodied unstructured summers, freedom from the tyranny of her classmates, and a comforting escape from her chaotic, demanding family. Now as an adult and journalist, her love of ice cream has led to a fascinating journey to understand ice cream's evolution and enduring power, complete with insight into the surprising history behind America's early obsession with ice cream and her experience in an immersive ice-cream boot camp to learn from the masters. From a visit to the one place in the United States that makes real frozen custard in a mammoth machine known as the Iron Lung, to the vicious competition among small ice-cream makers and the turf wars among ice-cream trucks, to extreme flavors like foie gras and oyster, Ettinger encounters larger-than-life characters and uncovers what's really behind America's favorite frozen treats. Sweet Spot is a fun and spirited exploration of a treat Americans can't get enough of--one that transports us back to our childhoods and will have you walking to the nearest shop for a cone.

I very much enjoyed this interwoven tale of the history of ice cream and the author‘s obsession in tasting and understanding the world of ice cream. I somehow connected years ago with Amy on social media which is why I was sad to recently learn from her husband‘s posts that she had passed away. I only wish I had gotten to her book sooner. It‘s a lovely tale well told.

After some heavy reads, I was looking for something lighter, and this hit the (sweet) spot! Ettinger explores how ice cream is made in the US (warning: your bubble about specialty ice cream shops may be burst) and tastes her way through similar products like frozen custard, gelato, and froyo. This one is a lot of fun!

This book has made me rethink what I thought about gelato and ice cream. It burst my happy little bubble, but also explains so much. My favourite chapter was about soda fountains. I will never look at soda fountains in old movies the same way again.

Gelato is like a studly hazelnut gigolo. Ice cream is like the vanilla husband who makes you long for adultery.

BibliophileMomma What flavors of ice cream 🍦 are those?! 😍😍🤤🤤 8y
Kaylamburson Friendly's ice cream cake flavor! Limited edition and was in sale at my grocery store this week, haha. It's crazy that the blue really tastes like the frosting of those cakes! And strawberry Halo Top ice cream! @Tiffness83 8y
TheLibrarian So jealous you have strawberry Halo Top at your grocery store! I'm just assuming it's delicious since their ice cream is pretty good. Plus it makes me feel less guilty eating it since it's lower calories. 8y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Sounds kind of like a book I read and loved in college 8y
Kaylamburson That book looks awesome, @TheLibrarian! If I keep reading books like this, all I'm going to do is eat junk, haha 8y
Kaylamburson Whoops the last comment was for @TobeyTheScavengerMonk! To @TheLibrarian I wanted to say that YES Halo Top is everywhere in NYC! My roommate loves it! It is fewer calories, but so expensive, so I always binge and get the big tubs of Breyer's or Edy's haha 8y
Texreader I'm an ice cream fanatic. Had a nice bowl for my evening snack. I simply can't give it up and will have to remain pudgy the rest of my life. #blameicecream 8y
Kaylamburson Completely agree @Texreader! I love worked at a creamery for 6 summers in high school and college, and I literally had AT LEAST one a day. 8y
MyNamesParadise Now I want ice cream! 8y
Kaylamburson You should definitely go get a couple scoops, @MyNamesParadise!! 8y
