This is a novel about the hundreds of tiny connections between the public and private worlds and how they affect us all. It's about the legacy of war and the end of innocence. It's about how comedy and politics are battling it out and comedy might have won. It's about how 140 characters can make fools of us all. It's about living in a city where bankers need cinemas in their basements and others need food banks down the street. It is Jonathan Coe doing what he does best - showing us how we live now. 'Coe is among the handful of novelists who can tell us something about the temper of our times' Observer Number 11 is Jonathan Coe's eleventh novel. His previous ten novels are all published by Penguin and include the highly acclaimed bestsellers What a Carve Up!, The House of Sleep and The Rotters' Club.

I've read a fair number of Jonathan Coe's novels and he never disappoints. This one is composed of a series of interlocking short stories with recurring characters, and touch on such topics as nostalgia and national identity, reality shows, social media pile-ons and the selfish, sterile existences of the super-rich. Very enjoyable.

CarolynM I've just read and loved his latest (edited) 4y

I bought this the second-to-last time I was in England and am finally getting around it. It‘s great - I love Jonathan Coe - but of course it‘s making me a bit homesick, despite the less-than-flattering depiction of the old country.

Brits from Kelly's suicide, who investigated Blair intervention in Iraq, to Great Britain just before Brexit. 2008 financial crisis, banks' rescue which cost cuts in public services. The bedroom tax which made people pay for empty rooms in social housing. Provided you're aware of his political views it contains a lot of musical references and wine suggestion you can use to make it more readable or digestible for the opposite party.

As The Times ssid: A very good book indeed!
I read this for a book club, it isn't one I'd have chosen. It was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the style, the way the chapters had small links to others, the character development and also the hint of uncertainty.
I'm so glad that book clubs allow and push us to read books outside our usual choices :)

Book club read for next week... I assume it'll be a reasonably quick read, given the cover review ;)

So this was okay. My heart didn't swell with love anywhere near like it did for The Rain Before it Falls. These were connected short stories, with some better than others. A solid commentary on the dangers and pitfalls of reality TV and social media.

Doesn't this capture perfectly how shitty social media can be (towards women...towards humanity, etc)?

It's been DAYS since I've felt like opening a book to read. I'm feeling so distracted!! Is it too early to start a fire and finally settle into reading with no distraction?! Maybe a cozy fire will help settle me?

Laura317 This sounds intriguing. I'm interested to see your review. 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Laura317 thanks! I've started the fire so I'm going to FOCUS on the book. Nothing else. 🙂 8y
Laura317 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders A fire sounds so delightful right now. Get yourself a blanket and a cup of tea and enjoy that book!! 8y

Thank you my wonderful littens. The last 3 months have been wonderful and enlightening. I've had a tough 7 years with anxiety based issues so I rarely leave the house or have many friends, so I'm not exaggerating when I say Litsy has changed my life. I have also started reading more interesting and current books like I did before I was sick. I'm not giving up on my thrillers😱 but really enjoying trying different things. Thank you all a million 💕
