A Dangerous Crossing
A Dangerous Crossing | Rachel Rhys
'An exquisite story of love, murder, adventure and dark secrets, Rachel Rhys brings this dangerous crossing brilliantly and beautifully alive' LISA JEWELL 'Thrilling, seductive, utterly absorbing' PAULA HAWKINS 1939, Europe on the brink of war: Lily Shepherd leaves England on an ocean liner bound for Australia, escaping her life of drudgery for new horizons. She is instantly seduced by the world onboard: cocktails, black-tie balls and beautiful sunsets. Suddenly, Lily finds herself mingling with people who would otherwise never give her the time of day. But soon she realizes her glamorous new friends are not what they seem. The rich and hedonistic Max and Eliza Campbell, mysterious and flirtatious Edward and fascist George are all running away from tragedy and scandal even greater than her own. And by the time the ship docks in Sydney, two passengers are dead, war has been declared, and life will never be the same again . . . "For weeks, the ship has been like a world within itself, a vast floating city outside the normal rules . . ."

PROMPT: SHIPS OR SAILING

A voyage of a life time for Lily?  Did it turn out that way?

DANGEROUS CROSSING had me hooked from the opening sentence.  Knowing something was going to happen on the ship that had someone arrested when they docked, kept the mystery and intrigue high as you waited for the event to happen.

It‘s a good one!!

This book had such a great premise and setting, but in the end it didn't really work for me. I had trouble connecting with the MC, Lily, who really blew hot and cold, I thought. A lot of the character development felt uneven to me. The opening chapter has a woman being arrested for murder, then we go back in time to the beginning of the voyage. I kept waiting for something to happen (or for someone to get knocked off!) but nothing really did, ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) other than everyone having lots of feelings. The ending also felt a bit overly dramatic for my taste. Still, I did love the 1939 setting, with its feeling of impending doom and denial.

Although this one wasn't for me, a lot of people have loved it, so if anyone (in the US, since postage is sad right now) would like this one, let me know and I would be happy to mail it to you!!

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

DANGEROUS CROSSING had me hooked from the opening sentence. Knowing something was going to happen on the “ship” that had someone arrested when they docked, kept the mystery and intrigue high.

Strong ending, but such a long, slow time to get there! I thought this was going to be more suspenseful than it was, and feel a bit misled from the synopsis. While the ending was very strong, the book definitely took its time to get there! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher.

I just received this delightful piece of #bookmail . A historical thriller? Yes, please! But @atriabooks screwed up my picture with that big orange sticker (you should have stuck it on the back!) #books #newrelease #thriller #historicalfiction #DangerousCrossing #RachelRhys

Icewineanne Received an advance copy too & the publisher put their sticker in the upper right of the cover.....🙄 6y
Icewineanne ...don‘t get me wrong....love the chance to be an early reader but i also enjoy looking at a “clean” cover while perusing 😉 6y

I was so bored at about 35% into this that I skipped to the last three chapters. I disliked that it was written in present tense. I didn't realize until the end that it's based on a true story, which makes it more interesting, but I don't think this novel does that story justice.

I made my decision. Going purely on the cover I'm sure I'm going to love it 🤓💞

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m guilty of that!! I‘m so sucker for beautiful covers! That‘s how I fell in love with Beatriz Williams‘s books!!📚😘 6y

I bought this one mostly because of the cover. I love the mix of image font...and it's set on an ocean liner. 🚢📚

Saturday night book: Rachel Rhys's A Dangerous Crossing. The blurb I have says it's a cross between Christie and Highsmith, which is an exciting idea.

Stephjones01 Just finished it and an enjoyable book but wasn‘t Christie or Highsmith standard, IMO 6y
