The Jane Austen Cookbook
The Jane Austen Cookbook | Deirdre Le Faye, Maggie Black
5 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Jane Austen wrote her novels in the midst of a large and sociable family. Brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, friends and acquaintances were always coming and going, which offered numerous occasions for convivial eating and drinking. One of Janes dearest friends, Martha Lloyd, lived with the family for many years and recorded in her Household Book over 100 recipes enjoyed by the Austens. A selection of this family fare, now thoroughly tested and modernized for todays cooks, is recreated here, together with some of the more sophisticated dishes which Jane and her characters would have enjoyed at balls, picnics, and supper parties. A fascinating introduction describes Janes own interest in food, drawing upon both the novels and her letters, and explains the social conventions of shopping, eating, and entertaining in late Georgian and Regency England. The book is illustrated throughout with delightful contemporary line drawings, prints, and watercolours. Authentic recipes, modernized for todays cooks, include: Buttered Prawns Wine-Roasted Gammon and Pigeon Pie Broild Eggs White Soup and Salmagundy Pyramid Creams Marthas Almond Cheesecakes

The current Jane Austen swap has had me looking through my own collection for the last couple of days. Today I sat down with a couple of my Austen(ish) cookbooks.

And after a nice big browse, what did I make? Banana bread from one of my regular old recipes! Why do I buy so many damn bananas? 😆

#AVeryAustenHolidaySwap

Lynnsoprano Oh, I need at least one (probably all) of these 😂 And I promise not to send you any of our bananas. Our tree is prolific, but the bananas are awful. We figure if they don‘t taste good to eat straight up, they probably won‘t be good to bake with, even if we could get enough to ripen at the same time. That plant is too much work! 3y
Chrissyreadit OMG Leah!!! I love your book collection so much. You have the best books! 3y
rubyslippersreads This photo has me drooling, in more ways than one. 😂 3y

Lindy Answer: because you love banana bread 😉 3y
Lindy @Lynnsoprano Is it possible that you have a plantain tree? Those only taste good after they‘ve been cooked. 3y
MsMelissa I love banana chocolate chip bread! I only like eating bananas when they are still a little green, so I always end up with leftovers since they brown too quickly for me to eat them. I haven‘t yet learned to just buy fewer bananas 😂 3y
batsy Mmm! This post is a reminder to make banana bread soon and buy more books! 😁 3y
alisiakae I also have Dinner With Mr Darcy. I haven't made anything from it yet, but I love looking at through it! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @Book_Fiend_Melissa I love to add chocolate chips into my banana bread too! 😋 Such lovely collection you own, Leah. 😍 3y
Kalalalatja I love everything about this post 😂👌 3y
Reviewsbylola So fun! 3y

Have yet to make any of the recipes, but they sure sound good!

LeahBergen I have this, too. It's a fun one!👍🏻 7y
DebinHawaii I made a couple of recipes from this book (with some heavy adapting) for the monthly film blogging event I take part in. Our movie was The Jane Austen Book Club. 😀It was fun! http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2015/12/apricot-marmalade-on-baguette-raspber... 7y
CrowCAH @DebinHawaii oh, wow, thanks for sharing your blog post! I was getting mighty thirsty! Lol. I've seen the movie and recently picked the book up at a used book sale. 7y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen my "all things Jane Austen" cohort, is there nothing JA you don't have?! Lol 7y
DebinHawaii @CrowCAH I picked probably the two easiest recipes of course. 😋This one was a case where I liked the movie better than the book but I really liked all the actors in it. 👍 7y

#Fruit
I couldn't decide ... Austen or Bronte??
#MayBookFlowers

saresmoore Both! These are so fun! But if I'm honest, I probably wouldn't be too keen to try many of the recipes. 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Nope. I read them strictly as historical curiosities! 😂 7y
Jess_Read_This How cool! Love these! 7y

Hobbinol It would be so much fun to have a dinner party inspired by the recipes. 7y
Eyelit I'd say both because they represent two different time periods 😃 7y
batsy Oooh, I bet these are really fascinating! 7y
LeahBergen @Hobbinol Wouldn't it?? But it would have to be a costume party! 😂 7y
LeahBergen @Eyelit Exactly! 👍🏼 7y
LeahBergen @batsy They are! 😃 7y
