“To be forgotten the very moment she thought she had been discovered and found precious was a punishment adult and terrible.” Poor Theresa, that is the story of her young life.

Complicated characters populate this novel. They are certainly not cardboard cutouts, which I wholly appreciated. However, for me it lacked a narrative drive so I didn‘t feel all that compelled to pick it up. #PersephoneClub

Tamra I am happy Theresa was seen & heard by Edwin & Miss Spooner. The only two who ever did. 1d
Tamra I also appreciated Edwin‘s anti-colonial attitude. (edited) 1d

ChaoticMissAdventures ✅✅ I love some complicated characters, but there has to be more to pull you along! Great progress 1d
LeahBergen I felt much the same way. It was a pick for me (although a low pick 😆); I found that I enjoyed the shipboard section more as it was more plot driven. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1d
CarolynM Yes, it was a bit of a slog for me too🫤 1d

Wow, I am guessing chapter 5 pretty much sums up this sad & fraught father daughter relationship. 😟 The chapter also probably explains why they are who they have come to be, which is damaged people. #PersephoneClub

I can‘t say I enjoyed this. It‘s a sad little story populated with unhappy, unlikeable characters. Even though I felt sorry for Therese, who everyone treated so badly, I found her hard to like, mostly because the author kept telling me she was charmless. I was surprised at how much the author claimed to have enjoyed her experiences in India - I didn‘t feel any of that from the descriptions in the book.

2nd down for #10BeforeTheEnd

ChaoticMissAdventures ✅✅ great job! 1w
LeahBergen You‘re definitely right about all the unlikeable characters! I did like Miss Spooner, though. 1w
CarolynM @LeahBergen She was the best of them, but her reserve was so extreme I wasn‘t sure until right at the end that she wasn‘t only being polite. 1w

I enjoyed this story of Teresa, swept away to India by her father when her mother (who abandoned her) threatens to come back into her life. Her father is cold and self absorbed but the boat journey (which I loved reading about) and her time in India opens her eyes to an entirely new world.

#PersephoneClub

CarolynM I think you‘re being rather generous to Mr Digby. He is appalling and he is making me very angry. It‘s hard to believe Lillian could possibly be a worse parent. 2w
LeahBergen @CarolynM You‘re so correct and I did want to use some rather harsher descriptors for him. 😆 I can‘t wait to hear what you think of Ruth… 2w
Tamra Definitely has raised my eyebrows a few times! 2w

andrew61 Yes Mr Digby leaves a lot to be desired as a parent, although I was shocked by his ultimate fate. Love your silver box. 2w
LeahBergen @Tamra Horrible little man. 😆 2w
LeahBergen @andrew61 Thanks! It‘s a little nod to India. 😁 2w
LeahBergen @andrew61 And I was shocked, too, but is it bad to say that I‘m “glad” for Teresa‘s sake that both he and Ruth died? 😂😂 It left her with some caring people at last! 2w
Cathythoughts Great review and photo.. I‘m loving the silver box too. I‘ve only started the book and enjoying so far 👍🏻 2w
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Thanks, Cathy! I hope you end up liking it, too. 1w

The 1st half as Teresa's father escapes Eng with his dtr to India, is a romp with curious characters + vivid descriptions of life on a ship but more vividly the sights, smells,+ sounds of bombay. The 2nd half finds the pair on T's half sisters tea plantation, a story then of strained family + marriage. Good read

I'd love to visit India but this passage transported me to a busy Bombay street as 14 year old Teresa strikes out on her own, escaping her dreadful father Mr Digby who is travelling half the world to spite his ex wife. Another enjoyable read in #persephoneclub

It‘s now October so that means it‘s time for one of our #PersephoneClub reads!

@Aimeesue ‘s pick for us this month is The Far Cry by Emma Smith. This is a casual buddy read; read and comment on each other‘s posts and reviews as you see them. We usually aim to finish by the middle of the month but that‘s not written in stone. 😉 And anyone is welcome to read along with us, of course!

willaful Doesn\'t look like this one\'s available for me. :-( 1mo
LeahBergen @willaful Oh, too bad! Maybe through Interlibrary Loan? 1mo

Thanks for the tag @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick

1. The tagged book is a Persephone book set in India - I loved it!
2. Yes, one of my other favourites was The God of Small Things.
3. Yes, a lot. We live near Bradford, UK, with its large Indian community, so lots of nice Indian restaurants round here....we also cook curry at home. I prefer ‘flavoursome‘ rather than ‘blow your head off‘ spicy! 🥵

Anyone else want to play along?

TheEllieMo Blow-your-head-off spicy is an English invention! Flavoursome is much better 😁 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Both books sound good. I am also a fan of the more flavorsome foods. Thanks for playing! 4y
Blackink_WhitePaper Blow your head off spicy 🌶 😝😝 nice one ...😛 thanks for playing 4y

Besides having far in the title this book is definitely all about #howfarillgo.

It‘s the story of Teresa, a young girl who is ‘dragged off‘ to India by her father, to avoid her mother who has recently returned to Teresa‘s life after abandoning her as a baby.

The descriptions of the boat trip there, the people Teresa meets and, of course,India itself are just fabulous.....

Loving the Persephone endpapers, as usual!

#MayMovieMagic

Cinfhen Jealous!! I think I‘m ready to own a Persephone book 6y
erzascarletbookgasm All these #Persephone and #NYRB editions are driving me crazy (in a good way) 😉 6y
RohitSawant How wonderful! 6y
gradcat I guess I‘m going to have to buy books (as opposed to e-books) so that I can have a nice row of #Persephone & #NYRB editions...really lovely endpapers! 😍 6y

Loved this book, I‘d call it a ‘classic‘ but with a slightly dark twist. It‘s a tale of difficult relationships through the eyes of a young teenager swept off to India suddenly by her father.

Thanks to @laurenbescoby for the Amazon Qb.99 tip off! Have either of you made a start on this yet @Oryx @MayJasper ? I think you‘ll enjoy it!

laurieluna That was quick! Glad you liked it, going to be at least another month until I get to it as I clear my currently reading pile 🙈 6y
squirrelbrain I just picked it randomly off the TBR shelf, and glad I did! @laurenbescoby 6y
Oryx Not started it yet, not sure when I'll get to it, but maybe will bring to Gladstone library in April if I don't get to before then. 6y
MayJasper No I haven't yet. To be honest my TBR pile (or rather piles) is getting out of control! 6y
