The World of Tomorrow
The World of Tomorrow | Brendan Mathews

Three brothers caught up in a whirlwind week of love, blackmail, and betrayal that culminates in an assassination plot, set in 1930s New York. Francis Dempsey and his deaf-mute and shell-shocked brother, Michael, are on an ocean liner from Ireland headed for their brother Martin's home in New York City, having absconded with a small fortune stolen from the IRA. But when Tom Cronin, a retired henchman forced into one last job, tracks the brothers down, Francis must capitulate to blackmail, or have his family suffer fatal consequences. New York, meanwhile, is suffused with the electric fervor of the World's Fair, which will see the country play host to a reigning British monarch for the first time in history. But when the befuddled Michael disappears, wandering the streets of Manhattan, and Francis becomes embroiled in an assassination plot, the brothers' long-awaited reunion with Martin may be short-lived. From the boozy nightclubs of Harlem to the backroom warrens of mobsters on the make, Brendan Mathews brings prewar New York to vivid, pulsing life, while the sweeping and intricate storytelling of this remarkable debut reveals an America that blithely hoped it could avoid another catastrophic war by focusing instead on the promise of the Fair: a peaceful, prosperous "World of Tomorrow."

Velvetfur Oh gosh that title reminds me of one of my favourite ever cartoons, a really old Tex Avery one called 'The Car of Tomorrow'! I'm sure there was also a 'farm of tomorrow' but I can't find it on YouTube.... Thanks for those happy memories 😁 5y

Set in 1939 #NYC, World of #Tomorrow was bound to end up on my #tbr list. Yet at a daunting 560 pages, it hasn‘t made it to currently reading since it went on the tbr in 2017.

For those who read chunksters, how do you keep from being intimidated and what strategies do you use to make it through?

Tee hee hee! I like to go on my library‘s electronic services site and occasionally search for newly added books. Sometimes I hit the jackpot and find books that were just added and grab them no waiting!!! Today was one of those days!!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Notafraidofwords I do the same. After heavy stalking, I know now what time and days. Friday‘s at noon lol 6y
RanaElizabeth Also! You can "recommend" a book that the libray doesn't own yet, like before the publish date, and you'll automatically get added to the holds list as soon as they purchase it. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ooo! I want The Last Castle too!! 6y

Bailedbailed

I'm going to bail on this one too 🙁. Way too many characters with stories in all different directions. I'm all for different points of view, but I'm 10% in and probably have been introduced to 15 characters already. There isn't enough spent on them for me to even get attached before we are on to someone else. I would give this a try another time - not just isn't the right time for me.

Love this cover so much. I'm only 6% in, but it hasn't hooked me yet. Hoping as I go I get a little more into it. 🗽🚢🌇

You won‘t be able to put this book down! The World of Tomorrow is a whirlwind dive into prewar New York City, written with the same frenetic pace as the boozy jazz age in which it‘s set. Entertainment abounds as our rotating protagonists stay one step ahead of trouble. With a serpentine plot that never loses its thread, and a payoff worth the page count, The World of Tomorrow is sure to be a hit. - Kelly

#TBRtemptation post 4! #BEA17 edition! An Adult Editors' Buzz winner! All those who have read this tome have said it's the "best big novel of NYC ever written", including Richard Russo. Slated for September 5th. It takes place over the course of only one week, but it covers the city's expanse. NYC, June 1939, the 3 Dempsey brothers face a vengeful mob boss and much, oh so much, more! Vivid realism sparkles. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

JessReads I'm starting this today! Have you read it yet? 7y
MrBook @JessReads Unfortunately, no. I plan to soon though! 😁 7y
RealBooks4ever Sounds a bit like E.L. Doctorow's World's Fair, which was fabulous! 💜💜💜 7y

The editor of World of Tomorrow got a little choked up talking about it on the #BookExpo Adult Editor Buzz Panel! 😭💔 He's read it thirty times by now so it must be one good read!
