When two estranged sisters reunite for their parents 50th anniversary, a family tragedy brings unexpected lessons of hope and healing amid the flowers of their mothers perennial garden. Evaknown to all as Loveygrew up in Oxford, MS, surrounded by literary history and her mother's stunning perennial gardens. But a garden shed fire and the burns suffered by one of her best friends seemed to change everything. Her older sister Bitsy blamed her for the fireand no one spoke up on her behalf. Bitsy the cheerleader, Bitsy the homecoming queen, Bitsy married to a wealthy investor. And all the while, Lovey blamed for everything that goes wrong. At eighteen, Lovey turns down a marriage proposal, flees from Oxford and the expectations of attending Ole Miss, and instead goes to Arizonathe farthest thing from the South she can imagine. She becomes a successful advertising executive, a weekend yoga instructor, and seems to have it all together. But she's alone. And on her 45th birthday, she can't help but wonder what's wrong. When she gets a call from her fatherstill known to everyone as Chief from his Ole Miss football daysinsisting that she come home three weeks early for her parents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration, she's at wits end. She's about to close the biggest contract of her career, the one that will secure her financial goals and set her up for retirement. But his words, "Family First," hit too close to home. Is there hope for her estranged relationship with Bitsy after all this time? Eva's journey home, to the memory garden her father has planned as an anniversary surprise for her mother, becomes one of discovering roots, and truth, and love, and what living perennially in spite of disappointments and tragedy really means. Eva thought she wanted to leave her family and the South far behind . . . but she's realizing she hasn't truly been herself the whole time she's been gone.

Mehso-so

The events at the end didn‘t happen in the order I was expecting but it makes sense. Just predictable. Not something I want all the time.

I thought this would be a good book to listen to while working in my garden and dividing Perennials for my Garden Club Plant Sale. I did enjoy the flowers and the fact that heroine does yoga. But after awhile the syrupy sweet platitudes just made me role my eyes and say ugh. 😒

This is a great book for a summer read. Enough drama to keep the plot moving, but set in the south where life just seems slower. Sisters Lovey and Bitsy are reunited when Lovey returns home to Mississippi from Arizona for their parents 50th wedding anniversary. The story centers most around Lovey (aka Eva) and her past, present, and future. You might start this book and think it‘s predictable but I will say I literally said “DO WHAT?!”

Not only was this book sad it was also “sappy” and predictable but in a good way. If you understand that then you‘ll more than likely enjoy it too. 3.5/5

Reecaspieces I loved this book because it talked about Oxford, MS and Authors! 6y

SilversReviews @Jess7 @MissAimz_55 I like Pic Collage too. I also use Typorama, Live Collage, and TypiMage. I had to pay for one or two of them, but they were not very expensive. I “think” Typorama is free and so is Pic Collage. 6y

Reecaspieces @Dolly thank you! Wish it was spring!! Brrrr 6y
Dolly I‘d be tired of the extreme cold if I wasn‘t for using the great outdoors as my freezer for the over supply of Xmas food. My visitors left and I‘ve had ice cream hanging from a doorknob for almost a week. 😂 6y

I went to grab Perennials at the library and of course had to grab one more. I‘m going to start Perennials instead of the other one I posted about. I‘ve been waiting a long time for this one so fingers crossed it‘s worth the wait!

Chelsibeau Cafe by the Sea is a cute light read 6y
Bostonmomx2 @Chelsibeau I‘m looking forward to that one as well. I‘m feeling quite overwhelmed by all the books I have that I want to read RIGHT NOW! 😳😳😉 6y

4⭐️ She had me at the fireflies! One of my favorite memories as a child was catching fireflies in a large pickle jar with holes punch into the lid, right alongside my big brother. PERENNIALS is a beautiful story about family relationships, & is stocked full of engaging characters. Julie Cantrell writes exquisitely about family love, returning to our roots. https://lharvey250.tumblr.com/post/169004025239/perennials-julie-cantrell-my-rat...

A sweet southern book written by one of my actual favorite people! It's not my usual type of read but there was a lot here to enjoy. Family dynamics are always fascinating to me, and with this novel I was thinking a lot about approval and how much of it we truly need from our family even as we go our own way. Very much a novel about how family can dictate who you are and what pushing back from that can do. Plus lit in the sip being championed!
