so-soThis was... Okay. Generation ship going to another star system, ship has some amount of consciousness, ponders the meaning of this while dealing with the various crises that come up.
I liked ship & their musing. The people were often dumb and frustrating. Very often I had to stop and ask why would/wouldn't they do X. Like change the codes for locks, when there's a security breach, or bring extra X when they knew they had shortages in the past.
pickEarlier this year, I read Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. The story of the first human expedition to another solar system.
This book is pretty darn fascinating. I especially like that much of it is told from the perspective of the starships AI supercomputer. It was a cool way to have a near-omniscient viewpoint in the story that didn‘t feel like a ‘narrator‘, so to speak. Really enjoyed it.

pick🎧 Chapter 5: “the people who have died are dead” ... uhhh ... 😆
I loved the science & a lot of ideas in this book made me think however I didn‘t connect with the characters, maybe because I‘m not on a starship? 😆
If I had just loved 1 character this might have been a 5⭐️ read but it‘s not a 1⭐️ either as some of the ideas are worthy of pondering.
Read the summary, it only scratches the surface & the characters are a bit shallow.

Today‘s indulgence #bookhaul from the library discards. Moriarty is for my mom, who‘s a big Holmes fan and enjoys many of the modern takes. I‘ve only read on KSR and honestly don‘t remember much other than I kinda liked it (been meaning to reread, it was assigned for an independent study in undergrad) so I thought I‘d take a swing at it. I believe this makes 17 so far.
pick🎧 Once you clue in to the overarching theme of Turing‘s Halting Problem, you can marvel at how meta this exposition of the theory is. Or you can just enjoy the story of the last generation of space colonists aboard their Ship 🙂
Ali Ahn voicing Ship is great, but Ms Ahn voicing the POV3 Omniscient parts about the protagonist, Freya— not so much .
But loved the story and will read more KSR
🎧 Starting this audiobook (narrated by Ali Ahn) today. It‘s about a multi-generational space ship on a 170-year (relatively speaking, ha!) voyage to an Earth-analog moon.
IIRC from an audiobook trade magazine, the ship‘s voice was achieved by having Ms Ahn read into a copper plated mic and, with minimal post-production enhancement. It sounds great!
so-soI liked the story line to it but it just didnt seem like my kind of book. I just couldnt get into it. One moment I'd be forcing myself to read it the next I was sucked into it. It was written well though just hard for me personally to understand so its definitely me and not the book. Give it a try you might like it alot more than me.😊
This book is definitely got alot of scientific and hard to understand language but it is still written amazingly! I love the story.
Was loving this book but stopped somewhere in the middle. Does any one else have that happen, Book Interupted, distracted by something and don‘t even know which page to go back to? Really cool ideas in this book.

so-soA multigenerational space ship travels to another star system to colonize a planet. I think I could have really loved this book, but unfortunately I found it dragged on & some of the pages long descriptions had me skipping through many paragraphs. I am still looking for a good sci-fi, space series....this wasn‘t the one for me. I will keep searching!🌠
Last year I only read 6% science fiction and fantasy, and I think that counted dystopias, down from my usual 20-25%. Hopefully I can read a bit more this year.
I'm reading Aurora for a book discussion group at worked composed mostly of science faculty. I was invited because I have a certain reputation of being a reader....

pickI‘ve read a number of SF books about generation ships and terraforming, which Aurora is both, but I‘ve never read anything like Aurora. I feel like I can‘t write much about the book without giving away spoilers, I‘ll just say Kim Stanley Robinson took this adventure in directions that left me surprised and yelling “what?!?” a number of times. The story is complex, the scale impressive, and trip fascinating.
My current paper read. Looks like a nice day but it's 59 degrees and breezy so fall clothes are back in the mix.

pickA generation ship travels from Earth to colonize a new world. Every person on the ship was born on the ship, and no one has ever stood on solid ground. I enjoyed the author's exploration of how such an isolated society would develop over generations.
pickThis was my 1st Robinson; it won't be my last. Fascinating science, in good hard science sci-fi fashion, but also a very human story. The plot is surprising & rich in emotional & technical detail. Loved it! (The pic is the view from our nighttime window--I finished listening in the dark tonight.)
Listening to Aurora & doing a bit of crochet after a long day. The audiobook narration is great, and Robinson's characters balance out the science to produce a remarkably robust story. It's bringing to mind both Seveneves & Embassytown--and The Martian! Really enjoying it so far.
