I did not like this book at all. I did not want to finish it but I owned it so it is hard for me not to finish this. It was so weird, it was fiction but so not wanted it to be. Very confusing.

merelybookish This was a so-so for me. I think he was experimenting with style and that created problems with the narration and the story itself. 6y
Cinfhen I got this one as an ARC but I never read it 🙊 6y

This books takes a few twists and turns. You think it's about one thing and then it transitions into another. It's not so much that it changes but that the story is built upon in such a layered way. I liked it.

Who knows why miracles happen or the reason behind the recipient? Certainly not Vietnam veteran, Cameron Harris, who just up and began walking after 4 years of being wheelchair bound. What follows in a comical life of reality TV, priests, souvenir shop trinkets and beer. I loved this book!

#2018Book60
When Cameron Harris suddenly stands up from his wheelchair and walks for the first time in four years, everyone is quick to call it a miracle. But between his doctor, a Vatican investigator, and a reality TV crew, every aspect of Cameron's life is suddenly under close scrutiny. And while this might help solve the mystery of how his paralysis has been cured, it is also likely to dredge up some elements of his past better left alone.

This book obviously wasn't written by a practicing Catholic. It's supposed to take place in 2014, but in 2011, we changed this phrase to "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." I'm pretty sure that a priest of all people would be familiar with this change.

I need to stop picking up the buzzy lit fic. It just never does it for me. I thought the 'true story' conceit fell very flat here (and I've loved that angle in other novels). This is also two different novels one about the miracle and the other an outsider love story, that are just smooshed together. Not a terrible book by any means; I just had a lot of problems with its execution. I have a signed ARC; hit me up if you want it (US only, sorry).

Just finished the Libro.fm audiobook edition and loved it. A smart, playful, and thoughtful story with lovable characters, it grapples with numerous issues such as southern identity, religion, sexuality, faith, and the limits of science. Thanks to @FountainBookstore for the great recommendation!!

What an extraordinary book. It starts slowly, but builds and builds into an ever increasingly quick paced adventure. This book ostensibly deals with what constitutes a miracle, but ultimately it deals with what constitutes a human being. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #25infive #SJPPick

My first read in #25infive. I‘ve read for a little over an hour. This is a slow start, but it‘s picking up. It‘s the current Sarah Jessica Parker/ALA Book Club Central choice. #SJPPick

Cathead Distillery here in Jackson, MS made a special cocktail for this fantastic book! They are traveling with Johnny Miles for his book tour; catch him in a town near you or make this cocktail and let the book and drink transport you to Mississippi.

Suddenly seeing this one everywhere! I‘ve had this bookmarked for a while when I saw one of my favorite booksellers raving over the ARC last year.

I‘m about halfway through and am enjoying the pseudo-journalistic approach the narration of this novel is taking. I‘m looking forward to the weekend (TGIF!) so I can get some time to dig into the second half.

What‘s on new on your reading list for the weekend?

Despite the nor‘easter going on in Philadelphia, the librarian conference is still happening! Attended my first event, and naturally snagged a few books. I hope not to flood everyone‘s feeds with tempting reads, so I‘ll use discretion!

But, very excited to score a hardcover of this one. Sounds so off the wall, I have to try it! Cameron is a paraplegic who miraculously walks from his wheelchair one day. Is it science? Miracle? Or something else?

DivineDiana Glad you made it safely! This snow won‘t stop! ❄️ 7y

4* This book is almost written like a true account of an actual event-(but it is a novel). Cameron, paralyzed by a bomb in Afghanistan, miraculously (or not) regains the use of his legs spontaneously while sitting outside the local Biz E Bee in his wheelchair. We get perspectives from all sorts of folks involved in his life, before and after his wounds and his recovery. It occasionally drags at time, but I ended up really enjoying it.

This novel, written like an investigative journalism piece, is definitely interesting albeit not very fast paced. Unfortunately the plot “twist” didn‘t work for me and I found myself more skimming than reading for the last fifty pages...#Shelfie #MarchInBooks @maich

I'm a little landlocked with my car in the shop (it died at the grocery store on Christmas Eve, natch) and I'm off work until next Tuesday, so I'm using this FREE TIME to read (!!) and NOT to climb the walls. Jonathan Miles is a longtime favorite of mine, so I am very excited about this.

Extraordinary tale of a paralyzed veteran who is gifted (or cursed) with a miracle, the storm that surrounds him in the aftermath, and the meaning of faith.

This book has ruined me. It was so good I don‘t want to read anything else. I‘ve been in a funk for days since I finished it, knowing that nothing else will make me feel like this did.

This is a loving portrait of America today: imperfect, ridiculous, dangerous, yet still inspiring.
