Self-Inflicted Wounds
Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation | Aisha Tyler
In her book Self-Inflicted Wounds, comedian, actress, and cohost of CBSs daytime hit show The Talk, Aisha Tyler recounts a series of epic mistakes and hilarious stories of crushing personal humiliation, and the personal insights and authentic wisdom she gathered along the way. The essays in Self-Inflicted Wounds are refreshingly and sometimes brutally honest, surprising, and laugh-out-loud funny, vividly translating the brand of humor Tyler has cultivated through her successful standup career, as well as the strong voice and unique point of view she expresses on her taste-making comedy podcast Girl on Guy. Riotous, revealing, and wonderfully relatable, Aisha Tylers Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation is about the power of calamity to shape life, learning, and success.

I had a great time with this book from comedian Aisha Tyler. She takes stories from her life and tells them with humor. Mostly I smiled or laughed a bit, but there was one in which I was silently laughing so hard, trying not to wake my husband, that I was shaking so much I thought I‘d shake him awake. 😂

I just started this one last night and am cracking up about how each essay has a related quote from a world figure followed by a funny aside from Tyler. 😆

I wonder if Aisha Tyler and Chelsea Handler have every had happy hour together? Really fun listen, Aisha‘s tales of drunken debauchery are rivaled only by Chelsea‘s in both absurdity and hilarity, but I liked the stories from Aisha‘s youth even better. I saw her do stand up before, I have been a fan a long time so I definitely appreciated this.

Have had this on my kindle forever so giving it a go. Enjoyed Aisha Tyler‘s work over the years. Reviews on here aren‘t amazing but I‘ve learned most memoirs from the entertainment industry aren‘t meant to astound.

I think Tyler is hilarious! Not necessarily of #Hollywood fame, Tyler is a comedienne of the small screen and stand up comedy. I was slated to read this for a challenge last year but did not get around to it - maybe soon?? #Movember

Cinfhen Didn‘t she play Russ‘s girlfriend on Friends??? 5y

#Litsychallenges This year, I'm challenging myself to not only complete the #readharder challenge, but also to make sure that all of the new books I buy for it are written by LGBTQIA, PoC, or women.

This was funnier than I expected. I loved the first half - especially her childhood stories, which were hilarious. The second part was still good, just not as goofy (because adults just aren‘t I guess 😀) #audiobook

MicheleinPhilly I loved this one. 7y

First finished book of the @24in48 #readathon. I am a fan of Aisha Tyler, but was not a huge fan of this book. It was ok, not great. It just felt like she was trying too hard most of the time. I liked that she read the audiobook herself and some of it was entertaining. I definitely know more about her now and will appreciate that next time I see her acting in "Criminal Minds".

Current #audiobook. So far, pretty good. I'm about seven chapters in and it's getting better as I get further into the book.

Anyone have suggestions for non-fiction audio that's not a humorous celebrity's memoir? This was the genre I used as an introduction to audio books last year and while I've enjoyed most of them, I'm ready for something different. I still give this one a thumbs up if you're looking for the funny-life-stories-with-a-dash-of-inspiration setup, though.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one too! Suggestions: 8y
jessberk13 Right now I'm listening to one called What If? narrated by Wil Wheaton. It's very interesting and totally outside my wheelhouse. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Funny person, but serious subject...I really enjoyed this 8y
See All 23 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa More serious science memoir, wonderful on audio... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jessica Wil Wheaton also narrates both of Ernest Cline's books, both are excellent. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Also serious but very good on audio... Photojournalist 8y
BookishFeminist Any of Sarah Vowell's books- she gets awesome people to help her narrate them. They're fun history/sociology/culture. Here's her latest: 8y
BookishFeminist Also any of Mary Roach's audiobooks. Here's my favorite: 8y
BookishFeminist The abridged version of Hamilton is also really good, mostly because I really enjoy the narrator: 8y
BookishFeminist And this one, which is done by the same narrator of Hamilton but it's the whole book. I believe it won an Audie? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'll second Sarah Vowell, history but with a wry sense of humor that I loved. I also enjoyed Doris Kerns Goodwin's audiobook of 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa A great social issue/social justice book, that is pretty topical right now and was very good on audio was 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So do you have a specific topic that interests you? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Politics of the recent variety (the election 8 years ago) and a look at all the strong women involved in that race... 8y
Bry @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist @jessica I knew I could count on Litsy-folk! There are some great suggestions here! I've been meaning to read Roach and Vowell and they sound like they'd be fun on audio too. What If and Lab Girl sound great as well. I'm not a big history buff but would probably be interested in kind of specific/unique aspects of historical events...haha, not sure if that helps. But already, you've given me lots to try. 8y
Bry @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Unfortunately, I think I'm one of the few people who didn't really like The Princess Bride. 😳 I haven't read it and I didn't watch the movie until I was an adult - maybe that was part of the problem?? 8y
BookishFeminist Happy to help! This doesn't exactly fit the "no memoir thing" but this has seriously been the best audiobook I've listened to all year. It's written by an Iranian-American comedian who isn't very well known- she does what she calls social justice comedy, and it's amazing! I was in stitches at several points where I actually had to stop driving from laughing so hard. It's more educational & comedy than memoir IMO. 8y
Bry @BookishFeminist That one sounds good too! I'm definitely not done with funny memoirs completely - it's just time to mix it up a bit (now that I've finally trained myself not to drift off and stop listening.) 😕 8y
BookishFeminist @Brybop I hear you on that! For me it's all about the narrator. I'm really picky about narrators. If they don't suck me into the book, I'd rather read it in print otherwise I'll miss too much & have to keep rewinding. 8y
Gezemice I just listened to Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and it is incredible. He reads it himself and it is only 3.5 hours - and it should be required to read for all! 8y
Bry @Gezemice I read that a couple months ago and when I finished, I immediately felt like I would need to read it again. Audio sounds like a great idea for that! 8y

Listened to audiobook. Stories were fine, but banal. Dropped this one to find a more engaging read.

SusanInTiburon Good to know. I always like to know what didn't enthrall, as well as what did. 9y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one on audio, but my other book friend bailed too. Oh well, it happens sometimes. 9y

I really wanted to like this one, but I guess I don't have enough of a taste for schadenfreude. There were some genuinely funny moments and a few great sections about working hard to fulfill your dreams, but if you don't enjoy laughing at someone else's expense, maybe pass on this one.
