Philadelphia Spiritualism and the Curious Case of Katie King
Philadelphia Spiritualism and the Curious Case of Katie King | Stephanie Hoover
4 posts | 7 to read
In the wake of the Civil War, Spiritualism--and its promises of communication with the dead--reached its peak as grieving families hoped to reunite with men lost in battle. In the face of an uncertain future, people sought comfort in the messages of mediums, and for Philadelphians, that reassurance was found in Katie King. Katie was a spirit who materialized at the seances of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Holmes--or so attendees believed. For eight months in 1874, she captivated every level of Philadelphia society, including Vice President Henry Wilson, who clamored to speak with the lovely apparition. When a believer-turned-skeptic decided to investigate Katie King for himself, the "spirit" was quickly revealed as a hoax. From the rise of Spiritualism in the city to the aftermath of the scandal, author Stephanie Hoover reveals the personalities and chicanery behind the curious case of Katie King.

I‘ve highlighted this book before...

Spiritualism and communing with the dead wasn‘t a new concept in the 19th century, but interest peaked post Civil War, for #ThePowerOfGoodbye .

Enter Katie King, a spirit who entered parlors during seances & helped bridge the gap between the living and the dead. Or, did she? Hoover records the history; I haven‘t read this yet, but I‘ve heard Hoover speak on the subject, and she‘s compelling! #Movember #NFNov

Haha...I last posted about this book 2 years ago!

Spiritualism and mysticism were the rage in the 19th century. This led to many, many people running cons, divesting unsuspecting victims of money and creating emotional anguish. Hoover writes about the infamous Katie King, a spirit in the Philadelphia area that materialized at seances. Or, was she a hoax? #IntoTheMystic #MarchIntoThe70s

Not exactly #supernatural, but this spiritualism certainly has an element to it. Communing with the dead was all the rage in the late 1800s, and Katie King was one such "spirit" who could help convey messages from the great beyond. #sizzlinsummerbooks
