Tells a compelling, self-contained story. Also, great art.

Brian K. Vaughan is the best graphic novel writer ever and you totally can‘t change my mind. This controversial political thriller isn‘t too unimaginable as a war between Canada and the US rages on. We follow a band of Canadian freedom fighters that love to blow shit up. I thoroughly recommend this one! So does Revan! #catsoflitsy

Book 7 of 2018 and I really enjoyed this comic set in a future world where Canada is invaded by the USA. It has a complete and satisfying story with really interesting characters.

People are shooting off fireworks and the dogs are antsy so we‘ve taken to bed with a pile of graphic novels and craft beer for the rest of the evening.

BookMaven407 I'm dreading the fireworks with the pups. Hope you have a nice NYE. 7y

The metric system. The struggle is real! Digging this graphic novel from"Saga" and "Y: The Last Man" creator Vaughan and, due to the man in charge in the U.S. currently, doesn't seem as unrealistic as it should.

My new comics that I picked up at #wizardworld today. I finally bought my own copy of Scooby Apocalypse. 😍
I received We Stand on Guard from a nice vendor after discussing my love of Paper Girls. Has anyone read it?

Brian K. Vaughn does it again! In this #graphicnovel, the U.S. invades Canada after an attack. Occupying Canada for years, the U.S. has systematically destroyed all but the smallest of guerrilla rebel units. In this futuristic, what-if scenario, we see Vaughn's commentary on war and issues surrounding it. This book helps to solidify Vaughn's mastery of complex conflicts told in the graphic medium.

I didn't know much about this one before picking it - but because I've enjoyed other work by Brian K. Vaughan so I decided to give it a shot - and I'm so glad I did. If water ever becauses more sought after then it is now, the prospect of the US invading CA for our water is entirelly too believable & it was fun to see one way it could all go down

MarriedtoMrT I wish my heart bleed poutine. Or that I could at least find decent poutine in my region of the states. I'm 100% US citizen but might defect for poutine. 8y

It's always fun to read a science fiction piece that has a ring of truth to it. We Stand on Guard, while proposing a future that is bloody and war-torn between Canada and the U.S., is also a great commentary on Canadian strength; both in spirit and fortitude. BKV is alway brilliant and the art was stunning. I do wish that it was a bit longer. Still awesome.

Started and finished this within and hour. It's a quick and mostly entertaining look at what could happen if America went to war against Canada, but I feel like it would have worked much better as a longer series. As a miniseries, the story ended up feeling rushed to the point of being somewhat unbelievable, and missed out on a lot of potential incisive social commentary.

That was badass! I feel like one very patriotic Canadian despite how terrifying the idea of us and the US at war would be.

Set in 2124, the U.S. is at war with Canada and is using mechanized weapons to repress the native population. But fear not! There is a band of motley rebels, hell bent on defeating the yanks and driving them back across the border. Of course, a pair of orphans lost in the battle aim to reunite.

brendanmleonard There's a scene in this that effed me up but good. 8y

This limited six issue mini-series from Image comics asks what would happen if the US invaded Canada for its water. I loved the premise and characters but I wanted more than the limited run had time to encompass. Full review: https://goo.gl/V68Jw2

DaveNeufeld I started building my underground shelter immediately upon finishing. The US can't have our water, that's what we brew our Tim Horton's with! Frightening... 9y

Rereading this because I'm giving a conference paper on it very soon! Great comic for lovers of good post-apocalyptic storytelling, American bad guys, and plucky Canadian underdog heroes. In other words: my comics wheelhouse. I'll be talking about coding Canadianness in comics at Congress best week.

marita Oooh...looks good! Would this be suitable for kids? 9y
sandra888 intrigued by your talk topic! hope you'll post full transcript or some readable version after..? 9y
brenna @marita it's a wee bit violent and scary, but I'd say 13+ is probably a safe age for it? I'll let you know when I finish the re-read in case I missed something awful. 9y
brenna @sandra888 it will hopefully (eventually) be a journal article! 9y
marita @brenna Thanks! My boys are 8 & 10 and their graphic novels have mostly been Amulet, TinTin and TenNapel (hmmm that doesn't look right). 9y

Interesting commentary on the attitude the US government takes when dealing with resource control. It feels like the creators think poorly of the US's involvement in the Middle East, creating a futuristic narrative to communicate those themes. Interesting. Well put together. Perhaps a tad patriotic
