Oh so close! I started reading this and about halfway through I was not sure I even liked the MC, Kate Moore, an ex-CIA agent, who literally becomes so sloppy that even through her suspicions doesn‘t see red flags all around. Then the suspense really amps up in the final third and the book went from a 3-star to a 5-star, but in the final pages the ending fell flat for me. I did like the book so I give it 4-stars.

Awk_Word_Smith P.S. I listened to the audiobook and found the jumps in time a bit confusing as there were multiple timelines and no audio queue indicating the jump—other than the final timeline. I can‘t say if the printed editions mark these or not. 12mo

I randomly saw this book years ago (probably more like 8-9 years ago) on a table in a bookstore. So I‘m listening to the audiobook now. Anyone else read this? Thoughts?

BarbaraBB Yes I did and I liked it much more than I expected. It‘s a decent thriller! 12mo
Awk_Word_Smith @BarbaraBB I‘m about halfway through it and I‘m not sure if I like the MC or not. I‘m hoping it was a setup and I‘ll side with her during the second half of the book. 12mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t like the MC at all. And that can put me off but in this book it didn‘t. Which I liked! 12mo
Awk_Word_Smith @BarbaraBB well that‘s great news. I shall carry on. 12mo

I was looking for a book set in Luxembourg. A woman who has kept her job a secret from friends and family has to move to Luxembourg suddenly when her husband takes a job there. They adjust to this new world where everyone is connected to banking in some way, many people don't seem to be who they say they are, and Kate is getting suspicious.

I was all in at the beginning of this story but I'm not sure I'm satisfied by the end. ↘️

ReadingEnvy I'm still thinking about it. Sometimes our former CIA operative has some pretty dumb blind spots. I wish the publisher had made different font choices because those used to differentiate the present-day timeline really hurt my head! ↘️
4y
ReadingEnvy But I feel I learned about Luxembourg as a place, and then went to YouTube to watch people speaking Luxembourgish which some describe as sounding like a mix between German and Flemish. In a country smaller than Rhode Island, you can experience the second most wealthy nation in the world, so there are plenty of questionable financial dealings and political intrigue to make a great setting for a novel. 4y
Ruthiella I‘m with you. For a smart woman, Kate sure did a lot of stupid things. (edited) 4y
ReadingEnvy @Ruthiella oh sure, person who is suddenly my best friend, take the keys to my car and use my computer unsupervised.🙄 4y

I‘m running a bit behind in the #ReadAroundTheWorld challenge- so this actually last month‘s book for #Luxembourg! But I really enjoyed this fast-paced and engaging thriller told from Kate, an ex-CIA operative‘s perspective when a transatlantic move suddenly makes her start to question all those around her in their small expat community. Plus, there‘s a sequel that I am diving into next!!

I almost feel like I cheated, but this was my #Luxembourg book for both #ReadingEurope2020 and #ReadAroundTheWorld. It‘s a spy-mystery-thriller, very American book about some Americans living in Luxembourg...

I was pleasantly surprised. At first I thought this book would be predictable, but I was very wrong. Lots of secrets and lies and espionage. It was fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB This will be my next read too! Looking forward to it - despite the feeling of cheating. I have to get rid of #Luxembourg 🤣 4y

#readaroundtheworld #luxembourg A cyber security spy novel that takes place in Luxembourg with a few too many plot twists and not enough character development. However, I did learn that Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy. It is one of the administrative capitals of the EU and foreigners make up about half of the population. A tiny country with universal health care and free higher education. Banking is the largest industry.

An American couple moves to #Luxembourg for a work opportunity, but they aren‘t being honest with one another. What could have been a fascinating, taut, twisty thriller is instead a bit clunky with an unevenly written main character. It‘s saved from a pan by the last 70 or so pages, which are what the whole book should have been.

#ReadingEurope2020

Lola I felt the same way about this one. Although I really do want to go to Luxembourg now 😊 4y

Lola @Cinfhen Hi friend!!! Just got past a slump so back on track-starting The Vanishing Half. Just read and really liked A Burning, This Must Be the Place, and Wine Girl. Also now reading Cork Dork and The Fire This Time. 4y
Cinfhen Glad your slump has passed😊I think we all experienced one since the outbreak of Covid🤪 I didn‘t care for Cork Dork, but it was more of the idea of master sommelier that annoyed me then the book itself @lola I listened to Vanishing Half on audio and enjoyed the narration! I was so torn on this one! It starts out strong, but jumps around quite a bit and I found it difficult to follow at times...I don‘t like when books change to the past or present with each chapter and it takes you a while to figure out which story line it was...overall it kept me engaged and I would like to read the next in the series, but I still have so many questions because the ending was quick and incomplete... ⭐️⭐️1/2

Loved all the intrigue and double-crossing! The story slipped back and forth on the timeline a little too much though. Was hard to follow in the audiobook, maybe it was more clear in the book. Was a great story though. Wish I had read this before #TheParisDiversion but c‘est la vie.

It‘s the weekend which means I finally found enough time to finish this book...which I started on the trip over. Kate Moore doesn‘t think too much about it when her husband decides to move the family to Luxembourg for a new job. When some of the other Americans she meets start acting suspicious, Kate starts to investigate. This was an enjoyable, somewhat predictable book perfect for a vacation read.

My dig season is right around the corner (so too is camp for the kids) which means we spent much of the weekend packing. It‘s a good thing too—no more changing my mind about the books going with with me. The decision is made and I‘m sticking to it (🤞)! And every year I go, I make a new bookmark with pictures of my kids to take with me—they‘re 15 & 13 now (wow)—and they add a short note on the back.

StayCurious What a great idea for a bookmark! 5y

It‘s not raining!!! In fact, it‘s even a little sunny and we haven‘t enjoyed much sun recently. So what better way to celebrate, and enjoy the day, than to go for a walk?!? And if that walk happens to include a trip to a bookstore—well, that‘s even more perfect! The Portable Edgar Allan Poe and The Expats are reading material for my summer abroad while the other two were on sale and looked interesting so I decided they should come home with me.😊

Country 47: Luxembourg is the world's only grand duchy (duke-ruled), about the size of Rhode Island. I enjoyed seeing the palace and walking and seeing the old buildings. I also visited the National Art Museum.
This was a reread. I love Pavone. It's a spy thriller of an expat family in Luxembourg. I'm so excited because a sequel is coming soon. Kate is a fun heroine and this reminds me a bit of Alias. 4/5

Disappointing. This could have been an interesting story if told in a straightforward manner, but it jumped around way too much. Instead of a useful plot device, it seemed like a gimmick and made it hard to follow. But it served two purposes - mystery #bookclub and #litsypassport - so there‘s that. Also, Luxembourg is tiny!

Not my usual fare but this was the "bonus" book chosen for my book club. I learned that more people read this than the primary book and I needed a palate cleanser so I'm giving it a shot. So far, it's a quick easy read that reminds me bit of the Bridget Fonda movie, Point of No Return (for which I will unashamedly drop everything to watch if it's on TV) and maybe a little bit Mr. and Mrs. Smith (which I've never seen but know the basic premise).

Smart, fast paced- set in European cities. Nothing like a suspense filled novel to get your mind off of things.
