We That Are Young | Preti Taneja

Jivan Singh, the bastard scion of the Bapuji family, returns to his childhood home after a long absence - only to witness the unexpected resignation of the ageing Devraj Bapuji from the vast corporation he founded, Company India. On the same day, Sita, Devraj's youngest daughter, absconds - refusing to submit to the marriage her father wants for her. Meanwhile, Radha and Gargi, Sita's older sisters, are left to run the Company... And so begins a brutal, deathly struggle for power, ranging over the Palaces and slums of New Delhi, the luxury resorts and spas of Amritsar and Srinagar.

We That Are Young | Preti Taneja

"Never has she spoken what she really feels, or wants to say. Out, rage!–it‘s a drug. A truth drug! Laughter bubbled up in her and she had to put her hands over her mouth to actually stop it from escaping. It came out as a croak–as if Surendra had cursed her to become a fat frog. A Frog Princess in need of kissing. She liked it. She decided that after the Kashmir hotel opened, she would find a prince brave enough to do it."

I'm thinking maybe I should've read King Lear first, because I can almost hear things flying over my head.

This retelling of King Lear set in modern Delhi has been on my radar all yr + i had contradictory feelings at the end. Its ambitious, with great reference to the original including storm and blinding, complex and interesting but at times i struggled & the characters have few redeeming features. It pulls apart modern society +the contradiction of wealth and poverty brilliantly. Overall glad i read it, she will be a writer i look fwd to rdg again .

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻❤️I loved King Lear in school... stacking 4y
TrishB I‘ve been half way through this for a while! I just can‘t seem to leave it or finish it! 4y
batsy Nice review! I have my eye on this one :) 4y

Emilymdxn I loved this book, definitely slow to get through but so rewarding in the end. I read it when it first came out and thought it was a bit of a slog to finish, but now years later I think about it all the time and remember the writing so clearly, my opinion goes up and up with time! Probably the best Shakespeare re-imagining I‘ve read 4y
saresmoore Great review! This certainly sounds intriguing to me. 4y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts definitely want to see the play again now. 4y
andrew61 @TrishB i felt the same in parts but in the end of balance worth it although would probably split a lot of readers. 4y
andrew61 @Emilymdxn yes i had same thoughts although it helped having seen lear a few years ago at the lowry but would like to see the play again now. 4y
andrew61 @batsy if you do get to it i will be interested in your thoughts. 4y
andrew61 @saresmoore definitely worth trying although at times not a straightforward read. 4y

I'm #sorry that I keep talking about the books I plan to read but don't actually seem to read 😂 But the #ShakespeareReadAlong has been immensely fun and these are four retellings I hope to get around to eventually: the top two based on King Lear and the bottom two on the Tempest.

#MOvember @Cinfhen

Lcsmcat I can highly recommend the Atwood and the Smiley. Both are excellent. 4y
Cinfhen No need to apologize for posting about books.!!!! That‘s what we love to see!!!! 4y
Kalalalatja Love the cover of the tagged book 🙌 4y

WhatWouldJaneDo I tore through Hagseed, it was fantastic! 4y
readordierachel Hey, if you're sorry about that, we all should be 😆 4y
GingerAntics I‘m going to have to look into these! 4y
batsy @WhatWouldJaneDo Nice! So much love for that one on Litsy; it's high on my list 🙂 4y
batsy @readordierachel I know, right! It's Litsy best practice 😂❤️ 4y
batsy @GingerAntics They're all very tempting! 4y
GingerAntics The fact Hagseed is written by Margaret Atwood really makes me want to start there. (edited) 4y
merelybookish Bad timing to mention I do have the Cesaire version of The Tempest? 4y
batsy @merelybookish 😂 I'm all aflutter this month! Does #ShakespeareReadAlong take a break next month? Would you like to attempt it then? 4y

The style of writing is just crap. Short and curt sentences with no natural flow to follow in between. Sometimes the transition is so abrupt that it starts to annoy you. I guess she did that to mimic our ever fleeting random thoughts but I could not adjust to that story telling style at all.

A superb, original book to immerse yourself in. I haven‘t read King Lear but enjoyed the re-imagining of this & other works, in India - it adds richness with a light touch. Memorable characters especially the 3 sisters; fun satire; & shows the corruption, wealth & poverty of India - but can also be enjoyed as a Bollywood family saga. Masterful writing. Thought-provoking, clever & hugely entertaining. 🧡 Our chat with Preti Taneja up now. 🎧🤩

Just started this one. Really enjoying it so far! She‘s in command of the story & the writing is supple. I have to finish it in time for the podcast so it‘s a race against time. 🙈😂

She's so incisive about new India- that paragraph perfectly encapsulates a certain strata of society.
