It‘s a shame that I liked this book much more than Louisa May Alcott did! 😉 If you read closely, you can detect some of her amusing sarcasm, especially when the autograph hounds hunt Jo down or in her commentary in the last chapter. 🤫 Nevertheless, I enjoyed following the March sisters (and their kids) during these later years of much change and growth. The spirit of Marmee was again, ever present. 🥰

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I've read Little Women SO many more times than I've read the two sequels - I really need to pull them out again! 4y
MemoirsForMe @TheAromaofBooks You must! They‘re very entertaining. Now I want to read more about Louisa May and her steamy crush on Thoreau. 🤔😉😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks Ah Thoreau! 😍 4y

I‘m not sure where this fits in re: the Alcott canon.

Jo‘s Boys is the third book in the March family trilogy and picks up ten years after the events of Little Men.

I‘ve yet to read this one but look at the cute endpapers. 😄

rubyslippersreads 😍😍😍 I read this one when I was a kid, but it‘s not a reread for me like Little Women and Eight Cousins. 6y
LeahBergen @Blaire I‘m surprised I never did as I was a huge Jo fan, too. 🤔 6y
LeahBergen @Lcsmcat 1957 Rainbow Classics series by World Publishing Co. Those candy colours sure scream “1950s”, don‘t they? 😄 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I also still need to read An Old-Fashioned Girl 😮(well, when I find a nice edition, that is). 6y
Aimeesue Ha! I was betting it was a ‘50s edition just from the endpapers. Snazzy! 6y
Lcsmcat @LeahBergen They do! Mine is from the war years (it was my mother‘s) so it has no illustrations. 6y

I mentioned that Little Men was ALMOST too sweet, but Jo‘s Boys definitely crosses the line. The cracks are really starting to show here—Alcott didn‘t really want to write this book. She even threatens to kill all of the characters in a cataclysm at the very end. Still, these are beloved characters for a reason and the warmth and sunshine of this book is escapist if nothing else. Still can‘t remember if I read it before, which is also revealing.

Vansa I felt this book undid all her good work. Considering Jo's character, why is Daisy not encouraged to do more than only get married? Why is Amy's daughter so boring?! Why was the entire plotline with Dan ( isn't that his name?) Even necessary, and why was his resolution so dire?! 6y
twohectobooks @Vansa I wonder if it was a deliberate effort on her part to undercut some of these characters. The way she describes Jo‘s experience as a famous author, and that hilarious threat to swallow everyone up in an earthquake or whatever at the end makes me think she was fed up and willing to mess around with her readers‘ expectations. I think Daisy is ok, though. Her one aspiration has always been homemaking and that‘s not necessarily bad. 6y

I visited the cutest little antique store when I was down in Denmark and I bought myself this copy of Jo's Boys 😊 It didn't cost much, but I love the wear and tear of older books!

GabrielleDubois How beautiful! I also have books from my grandmother, it's such a pleasure to keep them in the family and remember beloved parents. 7y
EliNeedsMoreShelves I think i have that same copy! 7y
Blueberry @EliNeedsMoreShelves copyright 1949? 7y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Blueberry it's at my parents' house, so I can't be 100% sure, but that looks SOO familiar. My grandma worked at a second hand shop for years, so every time they got an old book in decent condition she'd bring it home for me. 7y

#feistyfeb day 23: #boyintitle. There are three books in the Little Women series, and I read them all in my childhood. (Please tell me I'm not the only weirdo child that branched off to read Louisa May Alcott's entire catalog.) Jo's Boys is the third book in the trilogy. Not as good as Little Women, not even as good as Little Men (second book in the trilogy), but it ties up all the storylines nicely, and it is classic Alcott storytelling.

Joanne1 Oh yeah, I read them all. I've re-read Little women countless times but never the other two. I can barely remember them. I also read ALL of the Anne books and the spin offs. 8y
RealLifeReading Definitely read most of them! 8y
azulaco I really liked Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom, in some ways more than the Little Women series. Although the temperance propaganda in Rose in Bloom was a little heavy. 8y
Itchyfeetreader in the uk little women and good wives are published as two separate titles. I was so confused when I visited Louis May Alcott's home and saw no reference to good wives!! 8y
azulaco @Itchyfeetreader I never heard of that publishing split. Interesting. 8y

Here is my whole Louisa May Alcott collection. I sheepishly admit that I haven't read any of the other books. Someday.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I loved Eight Cousins as a girl. There's also a sequel, Rose In Bloom. 8y
