Using my #vintagebook for some #visiblemending. I love these boots so much! They've been with me all across Ireland and walked 80miles with me in Mexico. Any repairs I can do to keep them around is worth it!

Jo's Boys | Louisa May Alcott

'Young people think they never can change, but they do in the most wonderful manner, and very few die of broken hearts.'

I visited the cutest little antique store when I was down in Denmark and I bought myself this copy of Jo's Boys 😊 It didn't cost much, but I love the wear and tear of older books!

The Patchwork Girl of Oz | L. Frank Baum
post image

#fairytalefriday Not many people know the Patchwork Girl. She was brought to life to be the servant of a Munchkin magician's wife, but her magic brains were overloaded, and when she came to life, she was so happy, that she knocked over some petrification liquid on her masters, turning them to stone. 😱 This is her freedom story. 😊 #geauxread #bookstagram #oz #patchworkgirl #litsylove #ozite #munchkinland #vintagecover #vintagebook #covercrush

The Child's History of the United States | Charles Augustus Goodrich
post image

📖I couldn't leave this 1878 copy that was a mere $1. The childish penciled scrawl answering when was Thomas Jefferson born was charming inside. It begins with Columbus and ends with President Grant and the U.S. Centennial celebration in 1876.

❤️But it definitely #NeedsMoreLove and a binding... #AndItsAugust

charissharpe Quite a find! 7y
Cathythoughts I'm a kindle addict. But I see more & more how wonderful it must be to seek out old & new books & find surprises like this one , with the child's note. We do have books ! I'm just not a collector. Great find 👍👍👍 7y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts Thank you! I always love finding a surprise in my used bookstore finds. 7y

Merchant of Venice | William Shakespeare

"The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:"❤️

?Full Disclaimer: Shakespeare normally hurts my head to read. He is a writer I eagerly turn to Cliff Notes for help as a companion read. I do however like this beginning stanza on #Mercy and thought it was lovely for #AugustGrrrl

Cinfhen It is!!!! And your accompanying photo is 💕💕✅ 7y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen ❤️❤️❤️❤️Thank you! 7y
readinginthedark I love Shakespeare, and I still read a lot of companion info. with his works just to be sure I'm not missing anything, so don't feel bad. It's a lot to take in. 7y

Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark Your comment made me smile with some relief! Especially coming from a Shakespeare reader! 💕 I do want to try to read more of his work. I've been contemplating this quote for a a day or two now and it's convincing me to read more if I'm still mulling over sentences by an author days later. 7y
readinginthedark I'm glad! Totally counter to most books, but I would recommend maybe watching some movie or in-person productions of Shakespeare's plays to decide where to start. I've found that I enjoy reading the plays that I like to watch more than the others, and it helps to give more context of relationships between characters. There are still some I haven't read or would like to reread, so let me know if you ever feel like a read-along! 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark I would totally be down for a read along! Especially with someone who is more familiar with Shakespeare than I am. Have you ever been to Stratford in Ontario Canada? It is known for the Shakespeare plays performed there (edited) 7y
readinginthedark I haven't! I don't get to travel very much, but that would be really cool! I've been to a few Shakespeare in the Park productions in St. Louis, and they're usually really good. I'll look at my other reading challenges and try to figure out when would be good for me to start one. Do you have one in particular you'd want to start with or a preference between drama or comedy? 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark oh geez... I've read Romeo and Juliet.. portions of Hamlet and that is the extent of my Shakespeare repertoire. How about comedy? And let's hope the jokes aren't lost on me. (edited) 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark My uncle is a huge Shakespeare buff and teaches a few courses on it. Every year he goes to Stratford. I've never been but he recommends the plays there. 7y
readinginthedark Perfect...hm...what would you say to As You Like It or Much Ado About Nothing? They are two of my favorites with great movie productions if we want to watch them before or after the read. It's been a while since I've read them, too. And would starting in October be too late for you? I'm doing readalongs for both Lord of the Rings and Mansfield Park right now, so I need a little time. Maybe that would give us some time to get other people, too? 7y
readinginthedark Also, that's really cool about your uncle. Another spot to mark on my travel wish map! 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark How about Much Ado About Nothing? I have always loved the title and should probably know the story! Lol October is perfect actually!! I love the idea of opening it up to others too. (edited) 7y
readinginthedark Awesome! I'll set a reminder on my calendar to get it figured out and let people know in September. 😊👍🏻📚🎉 7y

Ever come across that book that takes you down memory lane in a heartbeat? This one took me back when I stumbled across it. I borrowed it once a month as a kid from our family friends; when they moved it went with them and my monthly reread of it came to an end. I couldn't walk away from it when I saw it. My reread last night transported me back a few decades.

Lcsmcat I had that set! It was a birthday present, and I got a volume in the mail about once a month. I still love books and getting mail. 😄 7y
Cathythoughts That's a lovely memory 💫 7y
Jess_Read_This @Lcsmcat I was hoping to find another Litten who had read this! ❤️ I remember the excitement of mail as a kid... I still get that way when I get fun non-bill related mail as an adult. 😄 7y

Lcsmcat @Jess_Read_This I learned about lacrosse from this book. My son loved them too, so I will probably pass them on to his daughter when she gets a little older. 7y
Purrfectpages Omg I have this exact book! I added it to my classroom library at school! 7y
Jess_Read_This @Purrfectpages ❤️❤️That makes me so happy to hear! It really spurred my interest in Native American history and I thought gives a nice overview of a tribe living in an area of the United States. I hope the kids in your class enjoy it! ❤️ 7y
Purrfectpages @Jess_Read_This I actually have a few from this same series. No idea how I got them as a kid. I'll have to take a pic and tag you when I go back to school! 7y
Jess_Read_This @Purrfectpages That is just so neat!! I can't wait to see them. I haven't read any other books in the series. This was the only one out friends had. I'd love to see the others too! 7y

💙I've been enjoying reading all about etiquette in 1911. Sigh.. manners, calling cards, dances, dinner parties. What a time to live! Then I remember that the idea of Prohibition gets introduced around 1918... so there's that. 🤔🍸
