Le Guin won the Hugo Award for best short story for this in 1974. It reminds me a little of Shirley Jackson‘s “The Lottery” (1948) but I found this even more unsettling. It‘s the kind of well written but disturbing story that stays with you and causes you to see unfortunate parallels in reality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've been asked to write a short text for a collective on Ursula K. Le Guin. It's great fun, and I'm happy to do it, but it's due Monday. I think I'll only write close to the minimum word count (I know that my text is basically padding). My point is that Le Guin asks a lot of good, hard questions and leaves the answers to us. I'm at the sucky first draft stage and it hurts.

My high school book club is reading short stories this month, so I decided to pick this up. I haven‘t read a ton of Ursula K. LeGuin‘s work, but definitely want to read more!

Almost lost my hold on The Dreamers but I caught it in time. I don‘t know a thing about Outbreak but I know I do love a contagion story. I was delighted to find The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas on it‘s own. Just a tiny #libraryhaul

Interesting thought experiment from Le Guin - what if one person (child) must always live in abject misery so the rest of society could live in happiness? Do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (or the one...)? What if it were an adult and not a child? What if instead of happiness the choice were health? Would you walk away from Omelas? 4.0/5.0 #2019

This book is on my kind of TBR list, mostly because four separate places in the last week I've seen a quite, or someone has commented on the novel or it's been suggested by a podcast.

Read this because of BTS. I love short stories, and the poignant yet open-ended nature of this “question” that the author proposed has definitely left me pondering a lot...

2️⃣ This time last year, I would have said Élisabeth Vonarburg, but I was so disapointed by her last book, I don't know anymore. Le Guin, probably.
3️⃣ Attractive to what? Coyote is attractive to walls?
4️⃣ Neither. I'm just tired now.

She has touched my soul. Life-changing, mind-blowing, achingly beautiful stories, novels, poetry and essays. I am grateful to have lived a bit along side her. Now that she herself is gone, her words will be with me to learn from forever.

I read The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas back in school & still recommend it constantly. It is one of my favorite things I‘ve ever read. Ever. This news is worth a bit of grieving today. 💔

This one is really sad. Ursula K. Le Guin is really the goddess of science fiction. The story was simple but oh so heavy. A real must-read.
