This starts slow but gets very good. The author makes very interesting worlds while also developing the characters.
Else is a child of a written world, and when her mother is captured and taken to Earth, she flees to one of the only people she trusts, who takes her to a home for children with abilities & makes friends slowly and develops a plan to save her mom.
4/5 stars, read for a unique book based story with smart characters.

Gwendolyn Clare creates alternate steampunk worlds in which young Elsa is searching for her mother in this story. Elsa is the target of the religious order trying to get rid of “gifted” kids, as well as the target of political powers trying to use her for her gifts. Clare‘s use of a foil companion for Elsa enhances her traits and skills, which allows the reader to understand her actions and choices, creating a richer experience for the reader.

This book had a slow start but interesting premise. Alternate histories are almost always (at least for me) fascinating and this one provided unique characters with interesting "gifts". Not something I would've normally picked for myself but after that ending I think I just may have to get my hands on book 2 so I can see how this story ends.

Dipping my toes in the steampunk genre. One of my reading goals this year was to read the back log of books I have received in subscription boxes so I figured it was time to give this one a go.

Started my first read of an Avengers Read-A-Thon based off of the characters. This completes the challenge for Iron Man (I even found one with Iron!) 👍🏼👍🏼

#BookMail Thank you @Avanders for the extra books for the #SciFiAndFantasySwap I‘ve been wanting to read Sea Witch for ages, the Two Dark Reigns will be reread before the last book comes out later this year & Ink, Iron & Glass sounds so unique, where the magic is called Scriptology & they can write new worlds into being. You, my friend, are awesome!

Avanders 🤗♥️🥰😘 Yay I‘m glad they made it safe and sound and that you like what I picked! 😁♥️ 6y

@TheEmpress thank you for this amazing #SFFS package!! The books all look good and are super pretty. Plus the journal, GOT oreos and K-2SO are great, and the unicorn journal 🦄 Plus I liked the book quotes on each item, it was super cute, and I need to stack some of the books! @Avanders

An overall pick. Original and suspenseful with a great pace and a uniquely drawn heroine. I found the love story aspect extraneous even after seeing how it fit into the plot; it just didn‘t seem believable. There‘s an awesome tentacled creature named Skander that kept stealing scenes. Lots of fun.

Beautiful cover. Awesome concept. Just okay execution. It was a struggle to get through. The writing style just kept throwing me out. I thought the character's relationships developed nicely but I just didn't care that much. Disappointed in this one but I get that I'm not the target audience. Recommend a #borrow on this if you want to give it a try. #ya #yafantasy #steampunk

I was around 120 pages in, and I still wasn't sure I liked the writing style. I picked up the book tonight and realized I'm really not invested in the characters and don't care what happens to them. It's very rare for me, but this is a DNF. I just couldn't get into it and I have too many other books to read. Maybe I'll try again later.

IheartYA This is sitting on my dresser as part of my last library haul. Ugh! 7y
tonyahoswalt @IheartYA Give it a try, maybe you'll like it more than me. It just wasn't as magical and lyical as I'd hoped, considering it's about words creating worlds. 7y

Was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, as I don't normally read Steampunk. I also like that the ending wasn't as tied up in a neat little bow as one would expect. Definitely going to read the sequel.

Finally starting this beauty. Need to get it back to library soon! A book about an alternate Victorian Italy where certain people can create new worlds through words and writing, a special branch of science called scriptology. I hope it's as lovely as it looks and sounds.

tonyahoswalt I'm a little over 100 pages in and I'm still not sure I like the writing style. Plus, with what it's about, I expected the words themselves to be more special, more magical, more lyrical. It's just okay for me so far. 7y
QueenOfWands @tonyahoswalt I still need to post a mini review on this one but yeah, I agree completely. I struggled through the whole book with the writing style. Overall it was just okay for me also. Too bad with such an awesome concept. 7y

I SWEAR I only went into BN to use the lady's room. It's always clean. But then I saw this book on the shelf 2 days early and one I meant to get last week. And then I ran into some kids who couldn't find space books that were not teen romance and I just couldn't help myself. I'm an ENABLER. They took home Illuminae and this is what I took home.

Zelma Oh, that‘s quaint - thinking you could go into B&N just for the restroom. 😉😂 not possible. 😋 7y
Kaye I like how you pointed out the clean restroom 🚽. It‘s an added bonus when you have to walk past thousands of books to get to the restroom 😁👍🏼 7y
