Argumentation of Historians: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Nine
Argumentation of Historians: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Nine | Jodi Taylor
27 posts | 24 read | 10 to read
The ninth book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone's cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don't call it "time travel"--these historians "investigate major historical events in contemporary time." And they aren't your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets. From Tudor England to the burning city of Persepolis, from a medieval St. Mary's under siege to Victorian Rushford and a very nasty case of gaol fever, Max is struggling to keep her private life intact. There's an ambitious programme hindered by giant teapots, plus Mrs. Midgely's objection to dead hamsters in her airing cupboard, and Mr. Markham's stubborn refusal to reveal his exact marital status. And as if that's not enough--the unfortunately not leprosy-laden Malcolm Halcombe is back. Admittedly, none of this is the most secure platform from which to launch an initiative to bring down the renegade Clive Ronan, but hey--what's the worst that could happen?

The crew at St Mary's is determined to trap their enemy Clive Ronan and use a trip to Persepolis as a decoy. Of course, their plan goes wrong and Max gets kidnapped and sent back to St Mary's in 1399. Another great installment in the series. My May #BookSpin book. @TheAromaofBooks

I do so love this series! This book was quite a bit lighter than the last one, but still... some very poignant scenes even in the midst of the wit and humor—and madcap rushing to and fro through history—that I love so much about this series. And the ending—! Did not see that coming, and dangit, now I need the next book right away! This is my #DoubleSpin for June.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 3y

“...I have always endeavored to employ the best and brightest people in their fields. I am not sure which particular field you occupy, Mr. Halcombe, but I think it is very apparent to everyone that, whichever it is, you are very far from being the best and brightest in it.”

5-10-21: My 46th finished book of 2021! Book 9 of the series. This time Max and her cronies are off to Persepolis to see Alexander the Great when something goes awry and Max finds herself stranded in 1399 at the original St. Mary‘s. As usual, there is time travel, tea, Time Police and lots of craziness always centered around Max. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣4️⃣6️⃣ #anargumentationofhistorians #joditaylor

My 100th book for the year! This time the crew of St. Mary's pops back to Tudor England, checks out Alexander the Great at Persepolis, and Max gets herself stranded (through no fault of her own) in medieval England for a year!
.
To say things went wonky for the team is an understatement as their attempt to capture the dastardly and wiley Clive Ronan leads to some startling revelations and a betrayal no one saw coming. Another wonderful read!

#audiowalk early in the morning in hopes to beat the heat... but the heat beat me.🙃

As for the book: the author gives us the mother of a cliffhanger.

This publisher—smart—has it all figured out as opposed to the publisher in my last post for Tombland, which doesn‘t even get credit for trying.

I'm so glad I finally set aside the horrors of book #8 and picked up this entry in the Chronicles of St. Mary's. There are interesting trips to the past, Max gets lost, Peterson and Leon get into a fight, things explode, and spies/saboteurs are discovered. This was lots of fun and a great listen during some tense and exhausting days at work.

GingerAntics Do you like this series? I‘m eyeing the first book in the series at the moment. 5y
DGRachel @GingerAntics I do. They're fluff, make no mistake about it, but I find them amusing and entertaining. They are perfect for when I just want some silly escapism. And if you like audiobooks, Zara Ramm is enchanting. 5y
GingerAntics That‘s what I was hoping. A good story. Nothing too serious. I love my nonfiction, but sometimes I just need to escape into another world! 5y

DGRachel I still have not been able to bring myself to read this one as I'm still so traumatized by #8. I did read the A Christmas Past short story, so I need to just bite the bullet as I'm now two novels and at least one short story behind. :( 6y
DarcysMom @DGRachel Oh my gosh! 8 was so very traumatic! I decided to tear the bandaid off and jump right into 9. I am glad I did! It will get you on the road to recovery. I am excited to get into 10, which is up next for me unless a library hold comes in. 😃 6y

Another enjoyable entry with Max and the St. Mary‘s crew. I thought the medieval life from Max‘s viewpoint interesting and amusing (since it wasn‘t me). As well as the development and evolution of Max and Leon‘s marriage. I wish there was more about matthew. And, I do think the Clive Ronan storyline has run its course. I hope it get wrapped up in the next book or 2.

All the fiction reads last month were the next book in one of the myriad of series I'm reading, with The Natural History of Dragons being the start of a new one. An Argumentation of Historians was my favorite but that entire set of books is high on my faves list. The MC from it has my dream job which doesn't exist but maybe in an alt-universe it's something I could've been. That's 133 books so far for the year.

There are no words to describe how much I love this series! Time-travel, history, irreverent humor, wonderfully flawed characters, adventure, love, heartbreak, life and death situations, etc., etc., etc. If you like quirk, this is for you. I keep telling people that this book contains my dream job...now if someone would just go about making time-travel a regular thing I'd be more than happy to sign up.

“Oh and for God‘s sake make the book a bit more cheerful this time,‘ was the supplementary command, relayed by a sweating minion. ‘Your last effort traumatized so many readers we had to set up a counseling group.‘” NO KIDDING!!!!! Jodi Taylor is not for the faint of heart.

I got totally sucked into this one which is the 9th of the series. Most of the story centers around Max and her plans and historical activities in a couple different places & times.

tournevis The title had me cackling, but then again, I'm a tenured member of a history department in a 'prestigious' University, so I should know historians. 7y

A return to form. This Episode of the St Mary‘s Chronicles sees a return of st Mary‘s nemesis? And visits to ancient Persepolis, Henry VIII court and fourteenth century England. There was some great cast performances but this was very much the Max show and I enjoyed seeing more of her. It‘s not high literature but it is a lot of fun !

rockpools Do these work as standalones, or do you think they need to be read in order? Just discovered my library has no 1 & no 8... 🤔 7y
Itchyfeetreader @RachelO I‘d say they work best in order. Whilst each has stand alone story lines there is also a running theme through them (side bar eight was my least favourite - it had less of the humour and sarcasm that the others have) 7y
rockpools @Itchyfeetreader Thank you! In that case, I'll reserve the first one and go from there! They sound fun! 7y

I know I wasn‘t supposed to buy any new books until I had read another two rom the already purchased. I do find it hard to turn down a new St Mary‘s Chronicle though so ... whoops ! 😉

tournevis My first impression while reading this is "why are all the women historians bad one?" In my considerable experience in history departments around the world, it's usually not thw case. Men historians, on the other hand... 7y
dsfisher Can‘t wait to start this one 7y
Itchyfeetreader @tournevis that‘s an interesting observation I skipped right over - maybe because in the earlier books the women are significantly more interesting and heroic than this maybe gives them credit for 7y
tournevis @Itchyfeetreader Let me know if you figure it out! 7y

It's book 9 in the series, so if you're still on the fence about reading it...DO IT! As always, the St Mary's Disaster Magnets go full throttle into everything they do. Max and her Leon are, well, even more themselves than ever. Read the series in order, though, including the short stuff.

PrueGall I know I have Book One - I just hope it's not in storage! Just starting on Litsy - hoping you can suggest s couple of people to follow apart from your wonderful self? 6y
